English to Portuguese: Life's a Beach, Then You Die (Morrer na Praia) - Falafel Jones General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English Max Fried is a former computer forensic examiner who devotes his time to swimming, drinking and bathing in the hot Florida sun, but today… it’s a real killer. A murderer is coming his way. When a smooth-talking lawyer persuades Max to find a deceased client’s estate assets, Max takes the job, thinking it will be a snooze. Instead, an old killer with a new identity breaks into his home and steals the client's computer. Max doesn’t know the computer contains clues to a 20 year-old murder but then, the murdering thief doesn’t know Max stored a copy of the stolen computer on his iPod. Too bad for the bad guy, the copy contains evidence that could get him the death penalty. Now, Max is the last one alive who knows why people are dying. If he can outwit the killer, he can return to his bar stool on the beach. If not, he’ll be victim number five.
Portuguese to English: Merlin - The Dragon's Call (Netflix) General field: Other Detailed field: Media / Multimedia
Source text - Portuguese No young man, no matter how great, can know his destiny.
He cannot glimpse his part in the great story that is about to unfold.
Like everyone, he must live and learn.
And so it will be for the young warlock arriving at the gates of Camelot.
A boy that will, in time, father a legend.
His name... Merlin.

Since I
graduated from the University of Porto with a degree in Applied Languages, I
have had the opportunity to work as a translator on a freelance basis, as well
as in-house. This has given me great insight into what is required of a
translator on both situations. My work as a freelance translator taught me to
be resourceful and to work efficiently in a very competitive market where I
need to provide quality work on often very tight deadlines. It also taught me
to be relentless and persistent when it comes to finding jobs. My in-house
experience comes from a five months traineeship at the Directorate General for
Translator in the European Commission. There, I received the best training on
translation software and, even though the deadlines weren’t as tight as on my
work as a freelance, the quality of the translations needed to be excellent,
since they were all made available to the general public and published on a
terminology database. After returning from the European Commission, I resumed
my work as a freelance translator and, since early 2015, my main occupation has
been the translation, proofreading and quality control of subtitles for
Netflix.
