Let’s start with Marduk. Many of you are familiar with this deity because I have discussed him in other seminars. But in case there is anybody here who doesn’t know him, I’ll briefly summarize his story. Marduk is a Babylonian fire-god with both solar and martial attributes. Today I will concentrate on the latter. Marduk and his brother and sister gods are contained within the womb of Tiamat, the great water-mother. When these godlings are threatened with extinction by their mother, Marduk is the only one who has the initiative to fight for his survival. He goes into battle against Tiamat and manages to destroy her before she destroys him. Out of her dead body he creates heaven and earth. Thus this fiery warrior-god is the creator of the manifest universe.
The Babylonians envisaged the beginning of creation as a terrible battle which required heroism and courage. The imagery of this creation myth describes a psychological dynamic relevant to any situation where it is necessary to survive through struggle and separation. The image of Marduk destroying his mother and making the universe out of her body is not only a symbolic portrayal of physical birth. It is also a portrayal of the emergence of the individual – the birth of individual consciousness. It is psychological as well as biological birth. We know that physical birth is a life-or-death struggle. In the birth chart we associate it with Aries and the 1st house, and specifically with the Ascendant. But we may not realize that psychological birth also requires a battle. We want our individual development to be pleasant, easy, and harmonious. Yet emerging as a separate being is a species of war, whether this involves making a stand as an individual against the family or making a stand as an individual against the collective. It is difficult and painful for us to accept the fact that we have to fight and kill – not in a literal sense, hopefully, but in a symbolic sense. Only victory ensures our survival.

En The Practical Past Hayden White sostiene que el modernismo literario, al tomar al ‘pasado práctico’ más bien que al ‘pasado histórico’ como su referente principal, difiere del realismo tradicional y descubre las capas múltiples de la experiencia del tiempo y de la temporalidad, y busca, a través de ellas, romper nuestra confianza en la temporalidad ordenada narrativísticamente de la leyenda, la fábula y la ‘historia’ (White, 2014: 77-78).
Partiendo de estas afirmaciones, en este trabajo indagaremos en la posibilidad de que la idea de pasado práctico nos sirva para pensar y representar los eventos que White ha denominado “modernistas”, particularmente, el Holocausto. Para ello, nos preguntaremos qué relaciones podemos establecer entre ambas nociones. ¿Cómo se relaciona el pasado práctico con las nociones de “tiempo histórico” de Reinhart Koselleck y de “regímenes de historicidad” y “presentismo” de François Hartog? ¿Cuál es la idea de temporalidad e historicidad que emerge de la idea de pasado práctico y cuál de la de pasado histórico?
Pensaremos estas cuestiones a la luz de la obra de W.G. Sebald, principalmente, Los anillos de Saturno (1995) y Austerlitz (2001), ya que está atravesada por eventos como las guerras mundiales y el Holocausto, su escritura-forma es modernista y la idea de pasado que figura y expresa tiene al pasado práctico del narrador como referente principal.

In The Practical Past Hayden White suggests that literary modernism differs from traditional realism by taking the 'practical past' rather than the 'historical past' as its principal referent, the literary modernism differs from traditional realism and discovers the multilayeredness of the experience of time and temporality, and seeks to present it in such a way as to shatter our confidence in the narrativistically ordered temporality of the folktale, fable and 'history' (White, 2014: 77-78).
Starting off from these affirmations, throughout this work we will navigate on the possibility that the idea of the practical past helps us to think and represent the events White called 'modernist', particularly the Holocaust. For this, we will ask what kind of relationships we can establish between both concepts. How is the practical past related to Reinhart Koselleck's concepts of 'historical time' François Hartog's 'regimes of historicity' and 'presentism'? What is the idea of temporality and historicity that emerges from the idea of practical past and historical past?
We will think these topics in light of W.G. Sebald's works, mainly The Rings of Saturn (1995) and Austerlitz (2001), since it goes through events such as the two world wars and the Holocaust, his writing-form is modernist by nature and the idea of the past that it represents and expresses places the narrator's practical past as the principal referent.

En esta cita que pertenece a “La muralla y los libros”, Borges se interroga por la misteriosa coincidencia de dos inquietantes actos pertenecientes al mismo hombre. El emperador Shih Huang Ti ordenó la construcción de la “casi infinita” muralla china y además ordenó quemar todos los libros anteriores a él. Ambas acciones no desconciertan a los historiadores, como acertadamente señalara Borges. Para ellos Shih Huang Ti, que redujo a su poder los seis reinos y borró el sistema feudal, erigió la muralla para defenderse, y quemó los libros porque la oposición los invocaba para alabar a los antiguos emperadores. “Lo único singular fue la escala en que obró”. Los sinólogos así lo confirman, pero nuestro escritor entrevé algo más que algunos hechos históricos de desmedidas proporciones. En efecto, también notó que el mismo emperador prohibió que se mencionara la muerte, buscó el elixir de la vida eterna y se recluyó en un “palacio figurativo”, que constaba de tantas habitaciones como hay días en el año. In this quote from “The Wall and the Books”, Borges wonders about the mysterious coincidence in two unsettling acts belonging to the same person. Emperor Shih Huang Ti commanded the construction of the “almost endless” Great Wall as well as burning all the literary classics written before him. These actions do not baffle historians, as Borges rightly pointed out. For historians, Shih Huang Ti, who manage to annex the six kingdoms and abolished the feudal system; raised the Wall to defend himself, and burned the books because the opposition used them to worship former emperors. “The only thing singular in Shih Huang Ti was the scale in which he operated”. Sinologists confirm it, but our author glimpses something more than some historical facts of epic proportions. As a matter of fact, he also notices that the very same emperor forbade all mention of the word ‘death’; he searched for the elixir of immortality, and secluded himself in a ‘figurative palace’ with as many rooms as the year has days. In this way, Borges proposes us to read not only facts, but also figures. He suggests that “the wall in space and the fire in time were magical barriers intended to halt the advance of death”.
