Culpepper was one of the first criminals I had seen whose damage occurred in adulthood, had a clear date of onset, a cause, and a well-defined location in the brain. My examination indicated that he had sustained two kinds of damage: developmental and physical. His mind had been damaged by a horrible childhood, and his frontal lobes had been ruined in an automobile accident. Culpepper crystallized for me two of the disparate elements I had regularly found in violent individuals. The sexual abuse he suffered in his childhood was necessary to establish his pedophilic urges but had not been sufficient to set them off. Having been a victim of childhood sexual abuse imprinted on him the urge to sexually victimize children. He had carried this imprint and the impulses had been inhibited by the frontal lobe of his brain. Absent the prior abuse, Culpepper, like the vast majority of people who have sustained brain damage, might have been emotionally blunted, impaired in his concerns about the consequences of his acts, limited in the capacity to be self-critical, and may have even had reduced sexual inhibitions He would probably not, however, had the specific desire to sexually abuse in childhood and this traumatic brain damage had transformed him into the perpetrator of a sexual crime against a child. This case and cases like it led me and my colleague, Dr. Dorothy Lewis, to develop a new theory, one that has the capacity to explain violent crime. According to this theory, the elements we had found in other murderers interact in the same manner as they had in the case of Louis Culpepper. It is the interaction of childhood abuse with neurologic disturbances and psychiatric illnesses that explains murder. Abuse generates the violent urge. Neurologic and Psychiatric diseases of the brain damage the capacity to check that urge.

Source text - English A forensic Psychiatrist in a southern state recently told me that he was able to argue successfully in court that his client, whom he had diagnosed as a psychopath, was not responsible for a murder because "your research shows that psychopaths suffer from organic brain damage." It soon became clear that he was referring to a recently published neuropsychological study in which we actually concluded that psychopaths did not suffer from organic brain damage, as measured by standard tests. His submission to the court on behalf of his client was based on an erroneous reading of our study. The psychiatrist's mistake was a lifesaver for his client: He avoided the death penalty.

“PLEASE! PLEASE LET ME OUT OF HERE!” The screams and moans coming from that closet soon became like audible wallpaper in the Knorr household. No one seemed to notice the sounds, but then Theresa Knorr had insisted on stuffing towels underneath the door to the closet so that it muffled her daughter’s cries for help. No one seemed concerned about Sheila, except Terry, by now fourteen years of age. She strained her ears to listen to any telltale signs of her sister’s condition inside that small closet. A few days after she was locked in there for the second time, Terry heard Sheila rustling around, desperately peeling off her clothes because of the sweltering eighty-five degree heat that drifted through the day and much of the night. The third day after Sheila’s reincarceration, Terry waited until her mom went out on a rare trip to the local store before sneaking alongside the cupboard with some refreshment for her stifling, feverish sister. All she could find was two cans of beer. She held a can to her sister’s parched lips because her wrists were still bound behind her back. Sheila was sweating so profusely that her hair was wet through. She asked Terry for water, but at that moment Terry heard the sound of the Ford LTD returning. It was beer or nothing. Sheila desperately swallowed it, much of the beer dribbled down the side of her mouth as she tried to drink the entire contents of one can
in a single gulp. The alcohol might have helped deaden the pain just a little bit… “There is a light above me. I think it’s a hole. I’m gonna climb toward it.” Those were the last words Terry ever heard her sister Sheila utter. A few moments later she heard a thump, then another, then another… then silence
