Bio
NOW INACTIVE AS A PROFESSIONAL TRANSLATOR. BACKGROUND:
I have worked for 25 years as a software engineer, earned academic degrees in chemistry (B.S., Yale, cum laude; M.S., Caltech) and computer science (M.S., Northeastern), spent 18 months working in Germany, and translated full-time from 2008 to 2010. While I speak a variety of languages, I translate exclusively from German to English. My clients have been impressed with my intuitive feel for the flow of words as well as my ability to capture the content.

CAREER:
While working on a computed radiology user interface for Philips Medical Systems, I translated the minutes and correspondence from an associated group in Germany. During that time, I took weekend courses in translation. I then worked in Germany for a year and a half, communicating with my colleagues in spoken and written German. Later, I worked on issues related to speech recognition in a variety of languages in the International Department at Dragon Systems, then Dictaphone and Nuance, where I dealt mostly with medical dictation. Over the years, I have translated/edited technical documents for a number of agencies. Most recently, I have translated/edited the following:

ENGINEERING/MANUFACTURING
- 77 patent abstracts for inventions throughout a variety of engineering fields
- test specifications for a packager
- test specifications for two automobile manufacturers
- user manual for an automatic screw system

MEDICAL
- lab results
- physician notes
- procedure descriptions

PHARMACEUTICAL
- consent forms for participation in a medication study
- description of a drug discovery process for the lay reader

SCIENTIFIC
- chemical textbook on catalysis (in progress)
- thesis on a mathematical model of anaerobic fermentation

SOFTWARE/INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
- contract for a project involving two software companies
- user interface, documentation, and promotional material for a software utility package
- documentation for a financial software package
- user manual, promotional material, and website content for a music composition software package

COMPUTER-AIDED TRANSLATION TOOLS:
I was fully certified in the use of SDL Trados and owned a licensed copy. I have also used OmegaT, SDL Idiom, SDL Passolo, and Wordfast for assignments, and have experimented with STAR Transit.
