What is anabolism, catabolism and metabolism?
Description
Anabolism is the aggregate of chemical processes that take place in the body, and is aimed at the formation of new tissues and cells.
Some examples of anabolism are:
- The synthesis of proteins and hormones
- The accumulation of fats
- The creation of muscle fibers.
Many people believe, incorrectly, that anabolism is solely the process of building muscle. In fact, it is also the synthesis of glycogen, which leads to the accumulation of fat deposits.
In order to prevent this, it is necessary to replenish the energy reserves in the body with high protein foods.
In addition, if your goal is to increase your muscle mass, you should make sure that your intake of calories is sufficient.
You can strengthen the process of anabolism in two basic ways:
1. Protein rich food.
When you increase the percentage of protein in your diet, you will have more “building material” for cells and muscle tissue. However, it is important to remember that the protein will not be beneficial in combination with low-calorie food, as in this case, the body will not have enough energy reserves to effectively build muscle.
Therefore, an athlete’s diet should be as balanced as possible, taking into account the regularity, degree and amount of physical exertion they partake in.
2. Reducing catabolism.
In order to reduce catabolic processes in the body, and to increase anabolism, you need:
- To get a lot of sleep
- Lead a healthy lifestyle
- Maintain a proper diet
- Avoid fatigue and stressful situations
- Train to the best of your ability while avoiding wear and tear of the body.
Catabolism is the opposite of anabolism. While anabolism creates new cells and muscle fibers, catabolism splits complex substances into simpler ones, decomposes old parts and oxidative substances.
The speed and intensity of catabolism depend on hormones. For example, glucocorticoids strengthen the decomposition of proteins and amino acids, but at the same time, they interfere with the production of glucose. However, insulin accelerates the catabolism of glucose but inhibits protein cleavage.
Catabolism also involves well-known hormones such as adrenaline, which enhances the processes occurring in the body, as well as testosterone, which is responsible for the prevalence of anabolism in the body’s substance exchanges.
It is important to understand that catabolism is not something harmful. Do not take it exclusively as a process which destroys the hard-to-build muscles.
Catabolism is also a source of energy, without which full-fledged training is impossible. In addition, the muscle fibers and the fat deposits disintegrate because of catabolism (due to a decrease in the amount of lipids).
Thus, anabolism is the process of synthesizing new substances and catabolism is the process of decomposing existing substances.
All this together is called METABOLISM, which means the exchange of substances.
Warning
Anabolism and catabolism are opposite processes but they are both part of metabolism, and both of them are important!
The right combination of anabolism and catabolism ensures well-balanced metabolism and the health of your body.
