Source text - English John Ruskin
(London, 1819 – Coniston, 1900)
[...]
During his formative years, painters such as J.M.W. Turner and John Constable were at the peak of their careers. In 1833, Ruskin discovered the work of Turner whom he met and befriended, and whose late work he soon defended and explained in his writings. Turner – who was a member of the Royal Academy – had been attacked by Neoclassical critics for failing to represent the “general truth”. In 1843, Ruskin went on to publish the first volume of Modern Painters, one of his major works that would eventually consist of five volumes and occupy him for the next 17 years. In a prose style peculiarly well adapted to the discussion of the visual arts, he argued that modern landscape painters were superior to Neoclassical Masters who, according to him, lacked of attention to natural truth. Ruskin’s first major achievement was to bring the assumptions of Romanticism to the practice of art criticism and to the understanding of the public who was thus introduced to the possibility of enjoying and collecting art. By this time, he had become the most famous cultural theorist of his days.
Translation - French John Ruskin
(Londres, 1819 – Coniston, 1900)
