Hello! You are being asked to take this training because we need your help! You are in a study to test if a potential new medicine helps people with sickle cell disease.
In this training you will learn how to use the handheld device [you’re holding it now] to answer questions on the device about your sickle cell disease.
We will teach you how to complete the questions, referred to as the diary, and when you finish the training you will take a quiz to see if you will be filling in the diary on your own, or if a parent or caregiver will be helping you.
2. Answering Diary Questions
Introduction
Use the Diary to report and answer questions every time you think you have a sickle cell pain crisis or short-term trouble breathing or a fever.
What is a sickle cell pain crisis? A sickle cell pain crisis is when you have sudden intense pain that hurts a lot. This pain could be in many parts of your body, most often in the arms, legs, hands, feet, belly, chest, or lower back. This pain can last as long as a few hours to several days.
You should also report any time you have trouble breathing or a fever in the diary. Please report these chest symptoms to your study doctor as well. It is important that you report any fever that you experience. These symptoms could happen at the same time as a sickle cell pain crisis or at different times, so do not worry about if the fever or trouble breathing is related to your sickle cell disease or not.
After you report a sickle cell pain crisis or short-term trouble breathing or a fever in the Diary, if the site has not already contacted you within 3 days of reporting this, please call the site. They will ask you a few more questions, and you can also ask any questions you have about the diary, the study medicine, or any other pain medication you are taking to help with the pain.
If you go to the hospital because of a crisis event, your parents or caregiver can help you report the dates and times of the events and the medicine you used, but remember it is important for you to choose the answers that you think are the most correct.
In addition to the daily questions you will answer in the evening about your sickle cell pain or short-term trouble breathing or fever, you will also need to answer 1 -2 questions in the diary once a week.
You will hear an alarm on the device that will help remind you to complete the diary every week.
