Translation - English Introduction
This essay is the beginning of a research project that sets out to analyze the attempts to diversify/expand Mexican foreign policy during the six year presidency of Adolfo López Mateos (1958-1964), whose goals were to counteract a strong dependency on the United States, and lessen the critiques of the left which had attacked the international performance of the Mexican government. Therefore, this paper will strive to explain that these attempts at rapprochement with other geopolitical realities corresponded to internal variables, as well as to external variables.
Adolfo López Mateos was the first Mexican president to do an official tour of the Far East, when, in October of 1962, he visited India, Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia. During his six year presidency, he reciprocated by welcoming, among others, the heads of state Jawaharlal Nehru, Ahmed Sukarno and Josip Broz Tito. He sent good will diplomatic missions to Asia and Africa with the purpose of encouraging political and commercial ties. At a multilateral level, López Mateos showed great sympathy and interest in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and, under his presidency, Mexico went as far as to participate in one of the international meetings of the movement with a special delegation.
