Getting away from proprietary, computer-based softwareDec 7, 2010

My objective by attending this webinar was to see if there is an effective way to get away from proprietary, computer-based software. I am not an XTM shareholder, but from my point of view, XTM Cloud shows the way towards vendor-neutral and efficient CAT/TEnT software. It may well be that more and more agencies will have to reconsider the use of PCBS (proprietary, computer-based software).

As an example - and I think this is a very strong selling point, this would save lots of time (and money) by avoiding the back and forth e-mailing of files and the handling of this antiquated absurdity: the bilingual document.

I look forward to see improvements soon (like a support for more web browsers: of course, I won't use iCab but IE is not really an option for Mac users) and further developments, my attention being mainly focused on multilingual TM's.

ETA: I have just completed my first tests with XTM Cloud, using a multilingual (DE/FR/EN) TMX file - it works!

I honestly do not see the advantage to any translation tool in wich I can not control the production process to 100%.

And currently, there is no need of any facilitator. There are tools like Teamviewer, that let you work without any problem directly at the customer agency with their tools, or means of direct file sharing and communication like Box.net, OpenDrive, etc.

And all of them, also avalaible for free.

Dear Elliot,

That was very nice and helpful to attend the course yesterday. As it was the first time for me to attend such a kind of courses, and I have not used any of the Translation Memories before, that was so good to get an idea about how these things work. All what I can say is, thank you so much, and definitely looking forward to learning more from your experience in the translation field.

Sincerely from Egypt ..........,
Mohamed Ragab

Hi Laurence,

Many thanks for attending the webinar and for your comments. The XTM team and myself are very excited about what the future holds. Core developments include making a XTM community, whereby all and any XTM Cloud users can work together and adding more administration tools, such as invoicing and so forth.

I really enjoyed giving the webinar and am looking forward to the next one.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Many thanks,

Just a quick inputDec 9, 2010

Hi Pablo,
I plan to write a more detailed article about XTM Cloud soon (over the weekend, I hope).
But let me just give an example of what I see as being an advantage.

Let's take Adobe InDesign and its latest release, CS5. As you are certainly aware of, this programme works with a proprietary format, namely IDML (InDesign Markup Language) and has no option to export this to the INX (InDesign Interchange) format, which can be processed e.g. in Trados, Heartsome etc.

Well, guess what? XTM Cloud supports IDML, so there is no need to wait for the next upgrade from the CAT tool publisher or to fiddle around on your own to find solutions - because, basically, this is not what you are paid for (at least not in most cases).

This is OK. Although, if you work directly with the client's tools this is not required, the customer is not always willing to let you work this way. Let me know if the article you intend to publish, will be published at ProZ or at your blog. And thanks a lot for keeping us informed!

After the L *** affaire, I usually do not attend seminars on tools in the cloud, but may be I am wrong about this. Have a nice weekend.
