The Portuguese language is now the fifth most common language “spoken” on the internet. Data released by the International Telecommunications Union show that the Portuguese language has already surpassed the Arabic, French and German as languages with the greatest number of users surfing the web. According to the entity, the growth of the web in Brazil over the past decade largely explains this prominent place of the language. There are least 83 million people worldwide using the Portuguese network. Experts say that in  few years Portuguese can overtake the Japanese – now with 99 million users on the network – and occupy the fourth place.

The reason for this is that the increase in web usage in Brazil, Angola and Mozambique still would have a long ways to go before reaching the same levels of penetration of rich countries, while in Japan the reality points to a technological “maturity”. Proof of this is that there are already more Portuguese speakers on the web than the 75 million Germans and the 60 million users that speak French. Arabic, despite being spread out throughout different regions of the world, today has a internet user population lower than Portuguese, with 65 million. More.
