South Africa’s first national Zulu-language newspaper hit the streets on Sunday, catering to a growing demand among the country’s largest ethnic group.
The Sunday Times launched its Zulu edition in KwaZulu-Natal.
“We are extremely proud to be making a contribution to the growth of an indigenous language. This in no small way contributes towards us living up to our claim to be ‘The paper for the people’,” editor Ray Hartley said in a statement.
“The decision to produce a Zulu edition was motivated by great reader interest. Research we have conducted using focus groups shows that there is great demand for a first-language publication.”
Hartley said the Zulu edition would be a condensed, single-section version of the English paper, and would be translated by Zulu-speaking sub-editors.
