“Like reading, translation allows you to access someone else’s experience vicariously, but even more deeply; the flipside is that when you’re translating something unpleasant, such as a lynching (I’m thinking specifically of a scene from Carmen Boullosa’s latest novel, TEXAS), it’s excruciating.

I think all translators are editors, in the sense that they are constantly making choices about how to best present a work of literature to readers of their own language.”
