The American Translators Association will hold a certification exam in Budapest, one day before the conference, i.e. on April 28th.

The certification exam will most likely take place in the conference venue itself, in one of the smaller conference rooms.

You don't have be American to take this exam - in fact, any nationals are welcome.

The exam is offered only in a restricted number of language pairs, and you have to meet a number of strict eligibility criteria to take the exam.

Also, you have to become an ATA member at least four weeks before the exam.

All details can be found here.

If you are interested, you have to apply and pay for the exam directly to ATA. The exam sitting is not part of the Proz.com conference, it is just conveniently scheduled to fall on subsequent days, and in the same location.

On the exam schedule page, you will see that the Budapest location is not yet listed. This exam sitting was approved only yesterday, so it may take a few days before it appears officially.

I encourage everyone interested to explore ATA's website.

The exam is not easy (admittedly, the success rate is only 20%), but it's a very good investment.

maybe a good investment, but certainly a costly one in any case. Jan 13, 2007

I looked into ATA certification. Maybe a nice calling card for those working a lot with USA, but means less otherwise. And in order to sit the exam, you have to be a member first and for those outside of US that is very expensive, you don't get the full benefits (insurance etc.) and they charge extra for sending the magazine outside the USA. Then you have to pay a lot to take the exam itself. And to register. And to take a practice exam. And and....

Plus, the exams are graded by other translators, not an official board. So if they don't appreciate your style or choice of words, you will fail. And if you want to know why you failed. you have to pay for that as well. (That alone is $100).
If you do pass the exam, then you have to continue to pay your annual dues-or you lose your certification!
For those of us not living in USA or working a lot with USA clients, our individual national organizations should be enough. Imho.

This is an OPTION Jan 13, 2007

The exam is just an option. If you think it does not pay off, you don't sit for it.
The practice exam is optional, you can take the actual exam without a practice exam.

I would like to emphasize that this exam is not affiliated in any way with Proz.com. It is just a very convenient "coincidence" that both events are scheduled one after the other.

Proz.com members with an existing ATA certification will benefit from 10 continuing education points by attending the

Budapest exam sitting now listed Jan 19, 2007

The Budapest exam sitting is now officially published on ATA's exam schedule.

Also, Proz.com's 5th international conference in Budapest is listed at the Events page of ATA.

If you are interested in taking the exam, do not forget to look at the eligibility criteria, and the procedure to become a member.

Start doing this now, as the entire procedure may take about two months.
