I get fewer requests. I do still mostly accept whatever jobs come in unless it means working flat out when we have guests, which is often. Basically I only refuse work when travelling, and I no longer travel in the summer.

Occasionally I get more projects in summer, but it has nothing to do with companies’ employees vacations but rather because my peers take summer vacations and I don’t…

It varies

It varies from year to year. This summer, I am getting fewer, especially this August because of the MEP elections in Europe and since the Commissioners have still not been appointed. Most of my work involves EU stuff of any kind so the elections and the August shutdown for MEPs and the institutions impact. I no longer travel in summer because of the excessive heat and the fact that most European countries north of Frankfurt are not prepared for the heat and I prefer to enjoy the sea or what's le... Yes, and also due to freelance translators' holidays
Aug 12
One client now sends me review work that they would usually do in-house. I've also received several requests from occasional or new clients, probably because their main Dutch freelance translators are on holiday.

Do you get more jobs as a freelancer in the summer due to companies' employees vacations?

I do see an increase in job opportunities during the summer as companies often experience higher workloads due to employee vacations. However, this can vary by industry and the specific needs of each company.

I think the "due to" part is imposible to determine for a translator

And hardly possible for a statistician. As a company employee, I'm taking a vacation in early September, but there was a time they really needed me in September and October and I had to take one in November (not the best time for anything in St. Pete, Russia). I wonder if the author of this question wanted to use two possessives (companies' employees' vacations) but then thought, "Boy, this is too much," and went for just one instead of doing a re-write

Depends on the field and the market

August was my busiest month when I worked on large B2B software projects. I wasn't substituting for any in-house translators. When I met some of those mythical beings, they were mostly occupied with editing and project management. The reason was rather that end clients would hand off projects before going on vacation themselves. And other freelancers might take some time off, but less than the average European.

This year it's a quiet summer here. My main clients require short-term B2C translations now. Today I'm translating 50 words and submitting my income tax return. ▲ Collapse
