Confused Feb 25, 2011

I'm confused. THere seem to be TWO London things (I refuse to say "PowWow"). The other one is here:

informal get together Feb 25, 2011

I mean this is what Powwow's usually are but I think the organiser of this Powwow, Robert, just happened to be coming to London around this time and wanted to know if any other translators wanted to meet up and RominaZ suggested he make it a Powwow. That's why there are two so close together!

At the risk of pointless repetition... Feb 25, 2011

...things are exactly as Frances has stated.

I definitely did not mean to step on anyone's toes.

Anyway, as of right now, there is a blizzard in Cleveland and my flight (originally scheduled for 6:30 p.m. is slated to leave at 2:35 p.m.

I am very appreciative of those of you who have shown interest in this powwow/shindig/thing, and I look forward to meeting all of you next week.

Why? Is powwow only possible between "native Americans" (="red Indians")?
The other one is here:
http://www.proz.com/powwows/3620

The later one is over three weeks later - I don't see that as a real problem.
2.
I'm sure some Prozians will like to meet Robert (I shall be elsewhere at that time) but unless he states (perhaps asking somebody to suggest one) a place (e.g. lobby of his hotel?), I don't see how that will be possible.

Oliver

1. ... because "pow wow" (I prefer "bow wow" anyway) is part of a particular Prozian argot that as a lover of the English language, I find too mannered and uncongenial (another example is the misuse of "agree" to signify "agreement" and "kudoz" to signify "kudos"; I just don't get it). How about "meeting", or as Robert puts it, " powwow/shindig/thing"? Or would that not be clever enough?

2. I wanted to sign up for Robert's thing, not the other one (too many people). As you can see, I'm an irascible fellow and the slightest thing gets me going. I can't handle large numbers of people. Or indeed, ppl.

Bow wow at Jeanie's place Mar 1, 2011

Hi Everyone, as there are only a few of us and it has been tricky for Robert to find a suitable venue, I have offered to host the pow wow at my home. I will be delighted if you will all come for some nibbles, beers, wine and chat (or bring your own tipple if you want). I live opposite Canada Water tube station which is on the Jubilee line (2 stops from London Bridge). If you have trouble finding it, just call me and I will come down. Tel. 0203 479 1603 / Mobile 07929129960. Also, I've only been ... See more

Also, I've only been here a couple of months so the flat is still rather bare; I have enough chairs ... but if more of you sign up I'll stop at Argos for more. Just so that we have an idea of how many to expect, could you please reconfirm. Looking forward to meeting you on Thursday at 6pm. Jeanie

Canada Water is just up the line from me. Is anyone invited, or are you all close personal friends?

I've yet to go to one of these kerraayzee shindigs.

The more the merrier... Mar 1, 2011

Hi All, just to re-iterite that I chose to host this pow wow at my own home because it was proving difficult to book a room in one of London's pubs with so few participants and Robert is visiting from the US and doesn't know London very well. Also, just to clarify, I only know very few of you so don't be shy and come and meet your friendly fellow linguists to network, exchange ideas, socialize or just have a moan and a groan about the lack of work and income .... Sorry you can't make it Tom, I ... See more

I've just discovered that we're having another get together... yesterday. I'm some 15 hours late. Could you at least post pictures please? And I hope to see you on the 26th of March!
