I am just wandering about the Metropol Hotel: do they accept the VISA card?
Besides, where is the best place to exchange euro? At the arrival at Skopje? Where In Ohrid?
Or putting it in other way, do they accept the euro in the shops, cafe's, etc?
Are there ATMs?
Thank you for your answers.

Money matters Apr 21, 2009

Henrique,

Allow me to offer answers to your questions:

- The hotel accepts credit cards for payment
- You can exchange euros to denars at the airport, upon arrival. The exchange rate is 1 eur = 61.5 denars
- In Ohrid, there are exchange offices all around the city and in the hotel logically. Cafes and shops do accept euro anyhow.
- ATMs can be found with the frequency of those in Lisboa<

Hello Henrique,
well, off course, I am not able to give you an explicit answer for it, as I have never been in the balcans, yet in the former Jugoslawia.
But I remember, in times of Pesetas, Francs, Marks and Escudos near the border and specially on turistic places (as Ohrid seems to be) on cafés, hotels, restaurants, museums, etc.. people were more than glad to accept other currencies. But I remember, in times of Pesetas, Francs, Marks and Escudos near the border and specially on turistic places (as Ohrid seems to be) on cafés, hotels, restaurants, museums, etc.. people were more than glad to accept other currencies. And so it was not a problem at all to pay with Pesetas in Perpignan (southern France), or with US Dollars in the town I was living. Nowadays, while crossing Switzerland by car, you can pay at all petrol stations with Euros and this is not a problem at all. However you get the change in Francs.
BUT: (And that's the reason I will change Euros into macedonian currency), the conversion they make is more than bad for you. In doing so, you loose a lot of money, if you pay your cafe in a bar at the lake's shore with euros.
Of course, depending on the arrangements with your bank and with the visa-people, it may be a good way to pay. But I suppose not in all cafés, restaurants, etc... will visa card be accepted...
Best wishes,
Helena

payment in Macedonia Apr 21, 2009

Dear Henrique,

payments in denars are obligatory, because I think there is a law on that. In some shops they may do you a favour and exchange it for you, but in most not (at least that is the case in Skopje).

And also by paying with denars you avoid being overcharged for coffee, taxi, etc.

Looking forward to meet you in Ohrid.

Kind regards,
Marina

More on money Jun 22, 2009

Hello!

I was just wondering about the price in Ohrid of things such as coffees/drinks, meals, taxi rides, excurions and stuff like that.

Apparently the prices are going to be lower than in western Europe and therefore I'm quite lost about the amount of pocket money that should be sensible to bring along. I know, I know, this is quite a personal decision to make at the end of the day

But I just thought that maybe somebody had some link showing some average current prices or maybe some nice Macedonians could shed some information relating to average prices in Ohrid? Just to have a rough idea...

Thanks a lot in advance!

Ohrid prices Jun 22, 2009

Hi Dolly,

Prices in Ohrid are lower than prices in Western countries...For ex, you can drink a cup of coffee for 1 euro (2 euros being the highest price), have a meal for 10 euros etc..so the prices are not so high..Anyway, it is always nice to have plenty of money in the pocket for any case......I just want to share these info so you can have some image about the prices...

see you in Ohrid,

Maja
