Translation - English The end of the millennium - and century - anniversary of 50 years of theatre gives us the opportunity to review in a small number of pages the “Puck” Puppet Theatre existence.
It is hard to recreate an atmosphere, the atmosphere of the show, or what remains of it after the passage of time. Time has not only let us forget; it has also diminished much of the testimony of those who have left a shadow of their creative brilliance here.
I take advantage of this anniversary to prompt those responsible for the fate of this theatre, the desire to preserve the testimonies of the past and, why not, to realize in time a museum of the theatre.
Fifty years ago, a handful of enthusiasts met to give birth to the oldest form of performance known in Romania, the puppet theatre. Directors, puppeteers, playwrights, scenographers, met over time in lively dialogue to create beauty. Let us remember with love all those seen and unseen of the stage, who through their talent have made what is deepest in us vibrate.
Some have linked their names to the Puppet Theatre in Cluj for a season, others for a lifetime. Chance has kept their memory which was immortalized in a photo, a poster, a notebook, a programme or sometimes only on a pay slip.
They are all mentioned in this first history. May it be a beginning for the respect we owe to these artists who through talent and dedication have awakened a taste for beauty and truth in the hearts and minds of so many generations of theatre goers young and old.
The Puppet Theatre of Cluj emerged at the same time as other professional puppet theatres in the cultural landscape of the country, and their birth certificates are dated 1949 or 1950.
The press of the time, documents from yellowed files, and the testimonies of the few survivors have preserved the excitement of the founding of the institution. The daily newspaper Lupta Ardealului, Cluj, 18 March 1948 mentions the initiative of a project for the establishment of a Children's and Puppet Theatre, with continuous activity and two sections: Romanian and Hungarian.
