Bio
Considering that my studies are in the domain of Linguistics, I am able to demonstrate perfect command in two foreign languages (English and German) besides my native language (Greek). Apart from my excellent knowledge of German, my English language skills are comparable to those of a native speaker of English. Throughout my studies, I had the chance to live six years in Germany and one year in the UK. Furthermore, I had spent two years studying at a US university before eventually going to Germany to pursue the translator’s degree.
In 2008, I completed my undergraduate and postgraduate studies at FTSK Germersheim (School of Translation and Interpreting Studies, Linguistics and Cultural Studies) of the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz in Germany having acquired the academic title Diplom Übersetzerin (equivalent of a Master's degree in Translation) for Greek, German and English in addition to a specialization in the field of Medicine. During my studies in Germany, I had the opportunity to tackle different kinds of texts ranging from medical and political to financial texts. In fact, all specialized translation courses for all three aforementioned languages focused on the translation of economic and business-related texts. In addition, I voluntarily participated in special translation courses, which were actually specifically designed for native speakers of English, with absolute success. Upon completion of my studies in Germany, I spent an additional year studying in the UK, where I obtained an MA in Conference Interpreting and Translation Studies from the University of Leeds (simultaneous and consecutive interpreting) for the languages Greek, German and English.
After returning to Cyprus, I was briefly employed at the German Embassy of Nicosia (October 2009 until August 2010), where I held the position of the translator/interpreter for German, English and Greek, bridging a maternity vacancy. To my main duties belonged the composition of the daily press release in German on behalf of the Embassy following an individual evaluation of the Greek and English speaking daily newspapers in Cyprus and translation of the main articles, the translation of official documents and mail correspondence and the provision of assistance on protocol matters. At the same time, I participated in international conferences which took place in Cyprus, where I offered simultaneous interpreting services both in English and in Greek. I also provided consecutive interpreting services from English/ German into Greek and vice versa.
Still, until today, I am primarily acting as a translator on a freelance basis. So far, I have gathered a substantial amount of experience in the fields of Economics, Business and Law in all language combinations, although I mostly translate into English and into German. In addition, due to my good computer skills, i.e. MS Office applications and the usage of the translation software SDL Trados in translation projects, I am able to complete all tasks efficiently and effectively.
