IBE is pleased to learn that Ingrid Scheffer, Chair of the League’s Commission for Classification and Terminology, was chosen as the 2012 Laureate for Asia-Pacific of this year’s L’Oréal-UNESCO Women in Science Awards. Professor Scheffer, from the University of Melbourne in Australia, was recognized for her significant contributions to our understanding of the genetic basis of a number of epilepsy syndromes as well as for her clinical skills that have established her as a leading clinician investigator.
The L’Oréal-UNESCO Awards, which were first created in 1998, recognize five outstanding women researchers each year who have contributed to scientific progress. There is one Laureate from the five major regions of the world: Africa and Arab States, Asia (including Oceania and Pacific), Europe, Latin America and North America. Each winner receives a $100,000 award. It is intended that these exceptional women scientists serve as role models for the next generation, encouraging young women around the world to follow in their footsteps.
Almost two thousand eminent members of the scientific community propose candidates for the Awards. Two juries, one in the Life Sciences, the other in the Physical Sciences, meet in alternating years to select the Laureates from these fields of research. The 2012 International Life Sciences Jury was chaired by Nobel Laureate Professor Günter Blobel. Also participating in the jury was Professor Christian de Duve (Nobel Prize in Medicine 1974) and Founding President of the L’Oreal-UNESCO Awards. Mrs. Irina Bokova, Director General of UNESCO, is Honorary President of the Jury.
With the 2012 Awards, 72 women from 30 countries, whose exceptional and exemplary careers in science have opened up new and sometimes revolutionary ways of improving human well-being, will have been recognized
Dr. Scheffer’s award is the first for an epilepsy researcher, and this prize provides great visibility to the work throughout the epilepsy research community. It is also an example of the great strides that can be made when a talented group of researches combine their complementary skills.
This award be presented to Dr. Scheffer at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris in March, 2012.

Brian Dunn was practically ebullient. “The one critical thing we offer the world is choice,” the Best Buy (BBY) chief executive officer said in a March phone interview with Bloomberg Businessweek. He was trumpeting in particular his company’s role in guiding customers through the expanding smartphone universe. “We provide the latest and greatest choice of all technology gear, from Apple (AAPL) products to Google (GOOG) products, and that brings more opportunity to help people put technology to use. That is a great place for us to be.” A week later, reality intruded. The consumer electronics retailer posted a $1.7 billion quarterly loss and announced it would close 50 stores nationwide. On April 10, Dunn resigned
Best Buy cited an unspecified “personal conduct” issue as the reason for Dunn’s abrupt departure, though the larger troubles plaguing the company haven’t changed. Founded in 1966 in St. Paul, Minn., Best Buy has watched its business stagnate because of a mix of macroeconomic forces and shifts in consumer behavior that essentially boil down to that one word Dunn bragged about as an advantage: choice. Shoppers are finding more choices online—primarily at Amazon.com (AMZN)—where they can often find a better deal. At the same time choice has narrowed in product categories such as HDTVs and PCs. There’s hardly a reason anymore to line up various models in a showroom.
Best Buy’s decline reflects a cultural shift that’s reshaping the retail world. All big-box stores, and Best Buy in particular, thrived in an era when comparison shopping meant physically going from store to store. The effort required of consumers was a kind of transactional friction. With the advent of mobile technology, friction has all but disappeared. Rather than ruminate with a salesperson before making a selection, tech-savvy consumers are more likely to walk into stores, eyeball products, scan barcodes with their smartphones, note cheaper prices online, and head for the exit. Shoppers can purchase virtually any product under the sun on Amazon or EBay (EBAY) while sipping a latte at Starbucks (SBUX). For traditional retailers, that spells trouble, if not death. “So far nothing Best Buy is doing is fast enough or significant enough to get in front of these waves,” says Scot Wingo, CEO of e-commerce consulting firm ChannelAdvisor.

Biakan yang diinkubasi dalam cahaya akan memproduksi bermacam-macam pigmen karotenoida yang befungsi sebagai pelindung terhadap fotooksidasi cahaya yang merusak. Selama inkubasi dalam gelap cahaya tidak terjadi produksi pigmen.
Pengukuran aktivitas respirasi menunjukkan bahwa biakan berpigmen lebih aktif dan kurang peka terhadap cahaya daripada biakan tak berpigmen.
Banyak inhibitor respirasi yang dikenal, diantaranya adalah sianida. Penambahan sianida menyebabkan penurunan aktivitas respirasi secara cepat di dalam biakan berpigmen dan tak berpigmen.
Diphenylamine, suatu inhibitor biosintesa karotenoida sedikit menurunkan respirasi biakan tak berpigmen tetapi efeknya tak sekuat sianida.

Flavobacterium dehydrogenans, a nonphotosynthetic bacterium has a light induced carotenoid biosynthesizing system. Light incubated cultures produced several carotenoid pigments which function as protection against lethal photo-oxidation by light. During dark incubation no pigments were produced.
Measurement of the respiratory activity showed that pigmented cultures were more active and less sensitive to light than non pigmented cultures.
Several respiratory inhibitors are known, one of them is cyanide. Addition of cyanide caused rapid decrease in respiratory activities of both pigmented and non pigmented cultures.
Diphenylamine, an inhibitor of carotenoid biosynthesis decreased respiration of non pigmented cultures slightly, but the effect was not as strong as that of cyanide.

Languages have always been an important part of my family, because my parents (my late mother and father) spoke three languages, Indonesian, Dutch and English fluently. At an early age I was introduced to a second language, English, and continued to sharpen my language skills with the help of my mother, who at that time taught English. I continued to sharpen my language skills, taking both local TOEFL test (score 550) as well as the Certificate for proficiency in English from the University of Michigan (also offered locally) Since I was more interested in science, technology and business, I continued to study chemistry at Insdtitut Teknologi Bandung and after graduating with a Bachelor’s degree, I embarked on a career in research and development and business management at several prominent multinational companies. My career in the business world provided exposure to a multi cultural environment, and provided opportunities to sharpen my language skills, particularly English, even more, because English was the official language used for communicating, it was like total immersion for eight to ten hours a day, five days a week, for more than a decade. I had to think, communicate, write (proposals, briefs, financial reports, new product launches, trouble-shooting/problem solving) even argue in English and act as interpreter for my expatriate bosses during meetings, market visits and field trips, and through all this I acquired proficiency in English, which is why I choose translation as my business.
After establishing my business as freelance translator, proofreader and editor (English <> Indonesian), I worked on several projects, translating a website, company profiles/reports, business proposals and reports for non government organizations, market research and surveys)
For the last ten years I have been involved in an ongoing project translating media reports and press releases from Indonesian to English and vice versa on various topics, among others, consumer goods, automotive products, lifestyle, community development, environmental issues, financial issues, tourism, hospitality, and travel. This is a routine project, from Monday to Saturday, with a turnover of around 20,000 words per month. I work with both international and local clients. Since 2015 I also provide translation services for international organizations working with the Government of Indonesia on projects financed by international grants for the improvement of welfare, community empowerment and development, including marginalized groups, gender equality strengthening local governments, particularly in rural areas, and environmental issues.
