English to Indonesian: What is Jakarta’s Message? General field: Bus/Financial Detailed field: Business/Commerce (general)
Source text - English What is Jakarta’s Message?
By Joe Wadakethalakal
Paul Graham wrote an essay years ago called, ‘Cities and Ambition’ which resonates strongly with me. In it, Graham hypothesizes that cities play a powerful and pervasive role in the ultimate outcomes of its inhabitants. Cities do this through the messages it communicates to the people living in it. Great cities convey multiple messages; some can barely be heard, they are mere whispers around the corner, while others are much louder, and are unavoidable at every turn. Every city however, in Graham’s opinion, has a single, dominant message it communicates to its people on a daily, pervasive basis.
Some cities communicate their central message more clearly than others. New York’s message is apparent the moment you land in JFK. Money is the most important thing in this city, and the city’s message is: Money matters. New Yorkers are obsessed with making money, even those who aren’t motivated by money, cannot avoid thinking about it on a daily basis due to the prohibitive cost of living in the city. As a result of this message, social status in New York is predominantly driven by your financial strength. Certainly other factors matter, but in general in New York, people want to know you if they think that you’re rich.
Los Angeles’s message is harder to decipher than New York, mainly because, like Jakarta, Los Angeles is a sprawling city with many unique highly defined neighborhoods. Even so, it is possible to detect a consistent message in LA, and that message is: how well known you are matters. In Los Angeles, probably as a result of the movie and film industry, being popular and famous is what matters most.
So what is the pervasive message that Jakarta sends to its inhabitants? This is a question I’ve been asking myself, on and off, for the better part of the last two years. Why does it even matter? It matters because a city’s message has a disproportionately large influence on its people, its entrepreneurs and its businesses. It is the underlying current which guides the direction in which they move. So what is Jakarta’s primary message? In my opinion, our city’s main message is that your ‘status’ particularly your socio-economic status matters. To be clear, this isn’t necessarily the message that Jakarta has always conveyed. Growing up in Jakarta as a child, a superficial focus on material wealth was only one of several competing messages the city communicated. Today however, this obsession with status is the pervasive, dominant message of the city. One sees symptoms of this message in every part of life. At social gatherings people try gain a sense of who you are by seeking to determine what you’re worth and who you know. Indeed one’s social connections, particularly to others of influence, matter as much as one’s wealth. A friend of mine recently visiting from London commented on how strange it was that every time he was being introduced to somebody, the introduction would include some detail about how the person he was meeting was connected to some influential figure in Indonesia. One only needs to go Mangga Dua with its rows upon rows of counterfeit, high-fashion bags to understand how strong the connection between wealth and social status is in this city. The branded bags are a sign of wealth, and therefore, status. You can see this constant focus on status permeating into the daily purchase decisions of most Jakartans as well. Jakartans will prioritize purchases which also serve as social status indicators, thereby improving their perceived position in society.
The city’s preoccupation with status is likely due to multiple factors, the most obvious one being the tremendous amount of wealth which has and continues to be generated in this country. Tens of thousands of Indonesians have joined the once closed ranks of the wealthy elite in Jakarta, and they seek to announce their arrival and communicate their status through conspicuous consumption. This behavior is then emulated by the rest of Jakarta’s society, which is highly aspirational, and seeks to enter into the class of the wealthy.
There are many things wrong with this picture of Jakarta society. I think the obsessive focus on status is culturally toxic and morally corrosive. But to be honest, this is quite an obvious take away. For an entrepreneur who has the faith, which I share, that Jakarta’s message will improve as this city matures, the more interesting question to explore is how one use the existing message of this city to his or her advantage? Keeping Jakarta’s existing message in mind, I think there are 3 key things to consider when building your business in this city:
Product positioning is key: Products or services which are deemed to be socially trendy are culturally relevant and massively popular. Focus on your product’s aesthetics. Looks matter in this market because something well-designed is associated with being expensive, which in turn makes it a status symbol. You’ll be extremely successful if you can figure out how to turn your product or service into a status symbol in Jakarta.
PR matters: The way that you and your company are perceived in the market is critically important here. In order to generate a strong and consistent positive impression about your business, management teams must be proactive about connecting with new people, maintaining good relations with everyone (to the extent possible), and protecting their reputation in the market. Executing well on all three of these fronts will help add a sense of prestige to your company which will pay off in a variety of ways, from recruiting talent to raising capital.
Chase influence: Actively seek to connect with and engage individuals and institutions of influence. This should be a key consideration when raising capital. When raising capital given a choice a startup should raise money from firms that have a lot of influence in Indonesia. Even if these firms are not as technically savvy, it won’t matter because they will be able to open many doors that other investors might not be able to, and technical sophistication is not as important in this market. The same logic applies to choosing your advisors. While it is important to have competent advisors who can give you sound strategic advice. It might actually be more helpful to identify and connect with well-networked advisors with great relationships who can make introductions on your behalf.
As anyone who’s ever swum out in the open ocean will tell you, it is far easier to swim with the current than against it. You may not agree with what this city is telling you, but you can still use its message to your advantage to build a great business.
English to Indonesian: So you want to start a start up? General field: Bus/Financial Detailed field: Business/Commerce (general)
Source text - English So you want to start a start up?
By Joe Wadakethalakal
Everyone wants to be an entrepreneur these days, however coming up with paradigm shifting start-up idea is nearly impossible, and yet it does happen so how does one do it? To begin with drop any pre-existing expectations. This is critical for two reasons. First, expectations can cripple your progress by creating artificial standards which may not be realistic, and may dishearten you if you don’t meet them. For instance, if you had set a growth target before getting started and then find one year later that your startup doesn’t meet it, you could lose motivation on your idea and potentially give up on something that might be exceptionally valuable. Second, setting up expectations of what your start up should be like before you’ve even started closes your mind to innumerable new applications and ideas for your business which could be immensely valuable. This is one great thing the founders of Airbnb had the discipline to avoid, and it contributed to their enormous success. According to Paul Graham (an early investor in Airbnb), Airbnb initially started as a platform to allow hosts to “rent their space out during conventions”, the founders built the Airbnb prototype while still thinking that their real ‘big idea’ was further down the road. However they kept their minds open to new applications for their technology and eventually Airbnb became enormously successful.
The single most reliable way to come up with good start-up ideas is to focus on solving problems you are currently facing. Why is this critically important? Well, in the first place it ensures that the problem you are trying to solve actually exists. You might think you have an obvious solution for a problem in an industry that you don’t understand, but the only reason your solution seems obvious is because you don’t really understand the problem in the first place. These are what I call ‘mirage’ ideas. If you ever think you’re at risk of having a mirage idea, there’s an easy way to solve it. Go talk to someone who’s very familiar with the industry you’re trying to enter. Explain to them the problem that you think you’re solving, and the solution you propose. If they agree with you and they’re passionate about your solution, you now know your idea is something worth pursuing.
Given the option of solving a minor problem for a lot of people, or solving a major problem for a small group of people, a startup should generally always focus on the latter option. Frankly however it’s not easy to identify a small group of people who have a painful problem they need solving. You could waste a lot of time talking to people in various industries, trying to determine what their highest priority problems really are - and that strategy might even work - but the easier way to find a compelling problem is to think of one you’re experiencing yourself. As unique as we all are, you can be sure that there are many people just like yourself dealing with the same problems you’re going through. If you can come up with a solution which you are honestly willing to pay for, you can be sure that there’s a market for your solution. I can’t stress enough however that the painfulness of the problem is critical when you’re going through this process. The problem must be painful enough so that customers are not going to care if the solution isn’t perfect, just as long as it gets 80% of the job done.
In addition to giving you certainty that you’re solving a real problem, focusing on a painful problem you’re dealing with has other advantages. First of all if the problem is a unique one, and you’re solving it in a very specific way, it’s unlikely that you’re going to have a massive market to begin with and therefore you’re unlikely to have any serious competition. Larger companies won’t think it’s worth their time, and if you’re problem is truly unique, it’s doubtful others have even thought about it. Another huge advantage of focusing on a niche problem is that you’ll be able to gain domain expertise within your field in a relatively short amount of time. Once you’ve established yourself as an expert within one vertical you can use your know-how to attack other similar adjacent verticals. This was the Amazon strategy. Initially Amazon focused on figuring out the best way to sell books online, and at the time no one cared about books, so few people noticed. However once they mastered this ability, they were able to use the same knowledge to dominate almost every other vertical, and now the whole world knows who Amazon is!
So to sum it up, if you’re starting a start up, focus on solving the painful problems you’re facing, and drop any preconceived notions of how your start-up should be. You will know you have found the right problem if you’re motivated to solve it just so you don’t have deal with the problem anymore. Solve something like this and you can be sure that others will be willing to pay you for your solution. Figure this out and you will be well on your way to building an exciting new business!

Joseph Wadakethalakal
Semua orang ingin jadi entrepreneur. Anehnya, justru banyak start-up yang bermunculan.
Sekarang semua orang tahu Amazon!
English to Indonesian: What to look for in an investor General field: Bus/Financial Detailed field: Business/Commerce (general)
Source text - English What to look for in an investor
By Joe Wadakethalakal
It is a great time to be an entrepreneur in Indonesia! Since I moved back to Jakarta a year and a half ago I haven’t seen the kind of excitement from investors that I’m seeing right now. Capital is beginning to flood the market and investors are competing aggressively with each other to invest into new opportunities. In this sort of environment, a strong entrepreneur is exceptionally well positioned. She essentially has her pick of which investor to partner with to build her business. But how does one pick the right investor?
Paradoxically, the one thing that you really shouldn’t consider when picking an investor is money. Surprised? You shouldn’t be. The only question you need to ask with regard to money is whether or not they have it. Once you’re sure that your investors have enough money to invest, capital is no longer an issue. The more important question to ask is, what qualities, assets, traits or attributes does this investor bring to the table, and how is that going to help my business? So that being said, what are the key factors to look out for? Let’s go through a few.
One easy thing to focus on is the strength of the investor’s personal and professional network. In the Indonesian market, having a strong network is exceptionally important and can be the key to opening doors to a new client, employee, or vendor that you wouldn’t have been able to meet before, so a strong network is certainly important. Make sure however, that the potential investor has a network that is relevant to your business, and is also willing to use their connections to help you grow your business.
The second key criterion in picking an investor is industry experience and knowledge. The best investors act as coaches and mentors who understand the intricacies and nuances of your business and can give you valuable advice anytime you encounter a hurdle that you haven’t faced before. Once you take on an investor you now have someone you have to keep updated on a regular basis, so make sure it’s someone worth talking to! Finding an investor who understands your sector will save you a great deal of time by letting you avoid having to explain the basics every time you need to make a business decision. It’ll also give you tremendous confidence to know that your decisions have been vetted by someone who is an expert in your industry.
Finally, in my opinion, the single most important thing to consider when picking an investor is to see how they have dealt with their struggling investments. The truth is, as an investor it is extremely easy to back a winner. They won’t admit it, but investors often have very little to do with the success of companies that are immediately immensely popular (think Facebook). Hopefully your business will enjoy this kind of automatic success, but the fact is, the probability of that happening is exceptionally low. You have to be prepared for extreme challenges, and it’s critical for you to know that your investor will support and help you through difficult times. How do you know if you’re dealing with this kind of investor? The key is to talk to other companies they’ve invested in which have struggled in the past. Call people in these companies and ask them how their relationship with their investor was when things weren’t going well. If the investor was helpful, supportive and did persistent in trying to improve their situation then you know you have a winner. Don’t forget, it’s easy to be supportive when things are going well; what’s more important is finding someone who’ll support you when you’re down and out!
