February, the month of love, has returned once more. Bangkok’s shops will be filled with vivid colours and symbols of love ranging from scarlet heart-shaped stickers to cutesy little cupids and roses while many start looking for special gifts, such as chocolate, flowers or dolls, for their loved ones. One of the most popular questions in this love-filled season is “Where to dine on the night of February 14?”. So, we have sought out a plenty of atmospheric restaurants for you. Our selection includes the luxuriously decorated Park Society with a spectacular park view, breezy Red Sky on the 55th floor of a centric luxurious hotel, romantically vintage The Garett serving simple but hearty American grubs, Scarlett Wine Bar & Restaurant boasting scrumptious French fare with romance-inducing atmosphere and beautiful city view and Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin which will take you on a surprisingly innovative gastronomic journey. No matter which restaurant you choose, you had better make an advanced reservation fast because we are sure that a lot of people want to celebrate their love in such fine venues as well.
Don’t forget that the day of love is not only limited to February 14. As long as there is mutual understanding between you and your special someone, any day or any dinner can always be a special moment of love for you.
Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin – Siam Kempinski Hotel
Some may think that only French or international cuisine can make for a memorable night, the unequalled expertise in Thai gastronomy of Henrick Yde-Andersen, the celebrated Danish Michelin chef of Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin, can also, without a doubt, deliver you an innovative epicurean experience that you will never forget.
The luxurious and tasteful image of Siam Kempinski may make you think that Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin is an exclusive place where senior executives engage in business talks over exquisite dinners. However, amidst the classic decoration of Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin and its black tone, rhythmically tinted with lavish golden elements, gastronomes will also uncover exciting stories magnificently presented through out-of-the-box culinary creations.
We had a set menu with drinks, selectively paired by the chef to match the unique flavour of each dish. For the drinks, guests can choose either 6 glasses of international wine or 5 glasses of juice. While we were taking in the soothing beauty of a lotus pond at the centre of the restaurant, the “Nibblings” arrived at our table. This crispy snack set consists of 3 small bites which were “Soy Roasted Cashew Nut Meringue” with a surprising touch of salt in the otherwise usually sweet meringue, “Kaffir Lime Leaf Scented Lotus Root” and “Prawn Cracker with Chili Tomato Dip”. These mouthwatering appetizers officially welcomed us to Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin’s innovative world of gastronomy. Coming up next was the “Street Food” series, a variety of Thai appetizers full of hidden surprises, consisting of “Tuna Tatar with Lemon Grass”, “Miang Kham Cornette”, “Prawn Bread with Sesame”, aromatic “Chiang Mai Sausage”, “Airy Yam with Beef Tatar” and “Crispy Chicken Skin Satay”. Each menu was served in a reasonable portion and blessed with artistic presentation. Do not be deceived by its strange appearance. Although creatively prepared by a foreign chef, the food has all the unique intense flavours that should normally be present in a traditional Thai dish.
The next highlights on the line were “Soup Based on Shellfish & Galanga”, “Steamed Ha Gau with Lobster Bisque” and “Scallop Tempura with Sapphire & Chili Jam”. The restaurant’s signature dish is “Frozen Red Curry with Lobster Salad” – a red curry ice cream topped with lychee bubble foam and surrounded by lobster and other ingredients which helped prevent the cold from dissipating away. Liquid nitrogen, at 200 Celsius below zero, was placed underneath to keep the dish constantly cool. With the help of this innovative element, the preservation of the ingredient’s original flavours, which was beyond our expectations, could successfully be achieved. Then it was time for some lighter grubs such as “Laab Duck Salad with Mint, Foie Gras & Red Onion”, strong-flavoured “Kiin Kiin Egg with Wild Mushroom & Holy Basil”, “Veal Sweet & Sour with Pineapple & Burned Onion Paper”, “Aubergine with Green Chili, Smoked Marrow, Shiso & Pork Cracklings” and, finally, “Pan Fried Foie Gras with Ginger” accompanied with tamarind sauce and warm rice.
Our fantastic meal came to an end with “Longan Sour Cream & Lime Pineapple Ginger” and one last surprise dessert “Greeting from Chef Henrik”, which we would rather you discover its surprising elements by yourselves. Having read to this line, now will you believe that Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin can magically fill your special night with culinary excitement? It will definitely be one of those indelible moments that make you smile every time you think about it.

Scarlett Wine Bar & Restaurant – Pullman Bangkok Hotel G
Pullman Bangkok Hotel G is a stylishly designed hotel, conveniently located right in the heart of Bangkok and blessed with a hip restaurant from which we had the opportunity to admire impressive views of the metropolitan’s nightly lights.
After getting off the lift on the 37th floor, the sunset-tinted sky outside the windows happily gave us a warm welcome. Scarlett Wine Bar & Restaurant’s indoor area and outdoor terrace are decorated with exposed concrete, glass, metal and creative furniture. Not only does this restaurant boast interesting decor, but it is also home to a celebrated 2-Michelin-star French chef who will take you on an epicurean adventure.
Since this place is also is a wine bar, do not miss tasting some of the carefully chosen wines from France, New Zealand or South Africa, just to name a few. You can either order your favourite wine selection or simply ask the connoisseurs for a recommendation to match your preferences. Side dishes that wine enthusiasts shouldn’t miss are, for example, “G-Board”, which comprises 3 types of ham, cheese and dried fruit, or a variety of small “Tapas”.
Scarlett Wine Bar & Restaurant’s signature menu is the healthy “Alaskan King Crab Salad”. Of course, normal salads can generally be found anywhere but this one, on top of its indelible delightfulness, is quite special and involves many elaborate details as well as careful selection of quality ingredients such as fresh fruit, vegetable, crab and seasoning. Many types of salad dressing are also available for guests to choose from. The next eye-opening highlight that made us go “Ooh” was “River Pike Fish Dumpling”. Although we couldn’t guess what it would taste like when we first saw it, the inviting aroma of cheese easily made us jump in and try without any hesitation. The dumplings were crispy on the outside, contrary to the delicate tenderness on the inside. We didn’t have to worry about fish bones or strong smell as they were apparently non-existent on this plate. This menu is highly recommended for cheese aficionados.
One of the main dishes of the night was “Duck Leg Confit” which screamed deliciousness when it landed on our table. The tender beef of “La Côte de Boeuf” was juicy beyond imagination. We then moved to the outdoor terrace before the desserts were served. You have to believe us that, from this terrace, the city view will leave you breathless longer than any other places. Shortly thereafter, “Granny Smith Apple Tart” arrived at our table. The apple tart’s flavour blended harmoniously with the accompanying homemade vanilla ice cream. Then we moved on to taste a mildly sweet and slightly crispy “Mille Feuille Grands Augustins”. At this point, it won’t be surprising if you and your loved one become increasingly closer to happily enjoy this intimate meal. Nothing can be more romantic than this.

Park Society – Sofitel So Bangkok
Since Park Society is part of the chicly designed hotel Sofitel So Bangkok, you can be sure that its decoration is equally stylish and modern, in addition to the stunning views of the metropolitan from the 29th floor.
Upon stepping into the restaurant’s area, what we had imagined was totally incomparable to what we saw. A gigantic transparent glass wall proudly displayed Bangkok’s late afternoon sky hovering over the verdant Lumphini Park. Tiny dots of sparkling lights from the roads down below, right in the business district, and the hexagonal marble dining table with two comfortable seats set facing the spectacular view enabled us to easily see the beauty out there. With a dancing candle light on the table, Park Society’s atmosphere was undeniably romantic to the extreme.
We celebrated the mesmerizing view in front of us with the pink cocktail “PS. I Love You”, full of enticing cranberry and orange peel flavours. Additionally, we also enjoyed the refreshing kiwi and cucumber flavours of another great cocktail called “Shibuya”. Then it was time for “Lobster Tortellini with Crab XO”, a recommended appetizer featuring tortellini stuffed with Canada-imported lobster filling, crab, mushroom and vegetable. Another distinguished dish was the sizable French “Foie Gras” carefully placed on top of bread and marvellously presented on a plate which was decorated with cherries and raw almonds. For French cuisine buffs, we are sure that you will be amazed at the foie gras’ delicate texture that will literally melt in your mouth together with the sweet-and-sour taste of the fruit.
While we were feasting on the savoury culinary creations, the curtain of darkness began to fall and the restaurant’s ambience, previously tinted with the last light of the day, gradually became even more alluring. The diamond-like reflection of tastefully chic urban decorations glittered merrily on the mirror. Once the main course arrived, our happiness escalated into perfect bliss. The “Angus Beef Rossini” is a must for meat lovers. Served on mashed potato and topped with foie gras, the beef rossini was sprinkled with just a right amount of truffle sauce. It was such a harmonious blend of tastes. For seafood devotees, please try “Sea Tasting Combo”, a platter of quality snow fish, salmon, squid, prawns, scallops and crab, freshly caught from the sea.
This meal would have been far from perfect without the desserts from “So Happy Ending” menu from which we ordered “So Sweet”, an assortment of sweet treats consisting of mildly sweet French Chocolate Lava Cake, delightfully soft and girly Berry Soufflé and palate-pleasing Tiramisu.
Our visit to Park Society made us realize that, no matter which night you choose to enjoy a special meal, this fantastic venue will show you that love is always in the air.

Red Sky – Centara Grand at Central World
If you want to celebrate your love on top of a modern skyscraper in the midst of the downtown’s intermittent lights, the sky-high terrace of Red Sky is probably the perfect place for you.
Situated on the 55th floor of Centara Grand at Central World, a luxurious five-star hotel which shares the same complex with some of the most luxurious shopping malls in Bangkok, Red Sky can be accessed via high-speed lifts. Once you get out of the lift, you will be amazed with unobstructed views of the sky above and the city below. Get away from Bangkok’s exhausting traffic congestion down below and let the sprightly lights of colourful lamps that dot dining tables, together with ear-pleasing live music, enliven your special moment. On a fine night, occasional soft nocturnal breeze will liven up your mood even more.
Red Sky’s tempting signature cocktail is the on-the-rock “Passion Fruit Martini” made with freshly squeezed passion fruit juice and topped with a soft layer of foaming bubbles. Alternatively, you can try the pinkish champagne-mixed “Imperial Mojito” before starting off with a mouthwatering appetizer such as “King Crab Salad”, a perfect combination of king crab, pomelo, melon, avocado and fresh vegetable. Another recommendation is “Cream of Cep Mushrooms” whose foie gras’ great flavour is further accentuated by warm mushroom soup.
And to make your special day even more extraordinary, the flamboyant “Red Sky Surf & Turf Tower” will leave you a big impression thanks to its exquisite presentation. A 3-tier tower of delightful delicacies proudly boasts generous portions of seafood extravaganza including Maine lobster, American scallops, Alaskan crab and gigantic Andaman prawns on the top. On the lower platter lies a fine selection of juicy Wagyu beef and mutton steak. After this impressive highlight, if there is still some space left in your belly, end your fantastic meal with the soft and sweet “Baked Alaska” and be amazed at the harmonious blend of raspberry-flavoured ice cream and meringue.
Before going home, don’t forget to grab your loved one’s hand and walk up to the bar to take in the beautiful views of Bangkok shrouded by a black veil of starry sky. It will be the night you will never forget.

The Garret – Ekkamai Soi 7
The Garret’s charm lies not in luxury or high prices but in its casual vintage ambience.
Finding The Garett may prove a mysterious experience since you need to go to the back of a Mini showroom to reach the lift tucked behind. Once the lift opens on the 6th floor, you will see The Garett, a spacious restaurant with eye-catching vintage decoration. There are 2 dining areas; the indoor space surrounded by glass walls and the outdoor tables. We were lucky enough to be welcomed by a cool breezy night. So, we chose the outside zone from which we could clearly admire the starry sky.
Amongst the drink list, the restaurant also offers its special cocktail of the month which changes on a monthly basis. For February, the girly love-filled signature drink is called “Pink Valentine” with the sweet aroma of lychee and mango. The refreshingly sour mocktail “Blue Mojito” is another interesting alternative. The Garett serves simple, unpretentious, yet delicious, American platters. We started off with a dish of enjoyable snack “Potato Skins Nachos”, fried nachos covered with melted cheddar cheese and sour cream, which was followed by “Jumbo Secret Chef Salad”, a big bowl of salad full of fresh vegetable, fruit, salmon and chicken. Marvellously prepared, “The Garret House Made Manhattan Clam Chowder” easily made its way to the top of our favourite menu.
Another good point for dining at The Garrett is that you can either enjoy the restaurant’s burgers or order from Fusio, an Italian restaurant next door. So, for ladies who don’t want to open your mouth wide to enjoy the delicious juicy burgers on a special day, you can order a dish of spaghetti instead. What we don’t want you to miss is the “Original Spaghetti with Mud Crab” which has quite strong but palate-pleasing taste. For gentlemen, we would like to suggest the aromatic tender “Grilled Australian Angus Beef Tenderloin”. For pastries, there are plenty of sweet choices to choose from such as “Chocolate Cheesecake” or “Sticky Coffee Bread Pudding”.
The special moment at The Garret is when you take pleasure in its simple cuisine with your loved ones in an airy atmosphere under the starry sky. It may not be surprising if this place can inspire such romance every day.
*The Garret is not lavish nor does it induce any excitement like a teenage love, but it can be a great place you should come with your special someone to have a heart-warming dinner in a cozy ambience.

The development project involves many complicated topics.
In each local community, we need to take into account more than just one factor.
It is not solely about culture, environment or one particular aspect.
There are multiple layers of problems, one on top another.
What I like about Nang Loeng is how they manage their project. It is a poor community. It is actually a slum in the heart of the city. They don’t have money, but they truly want to take part in solving the problems of their community.
The local people must avoid paying too much attention on the big picture. We must think first whether we can really make it possible.
In order to determine the next steps, we must know who we are, who we were and what advantages we hold. Start from searching for our stories and finding out what our values are.
So, we think of our local culture. We have valuable people, those who are willing and want to improve their own community from the inside.
We started from the inside. We integrated contemporary art and ideas from new generation into our thought process and used our culture and history in the presentation.
Strangely enough, most people in the community are artists, devoting to “Chatree” drama dance, “Khon” or traditional drama performances.
To preserve the traditional “Chatree” drama dance, we searched for volunteer “Chatree” instructors who were willing to teach our children. We renovated and turned old houses into art houses where kids could learn about dancing or other forms of art.
Talking about arts, Nang Loeng people have deep artistic understanding. So, their feedback was quite positive. Nang Loeng people take part in creating art, thus generating more jobs in the community.
From this point, we started finding partners who would help us in the process of community development. We designed many unique, interesting and trendy activities.
We had this idea of using illumination as a highlight. We lighted up all cultural heritage sites in the area so that people would start noticing and thinking about the importance of their cultural heritage. That is the origin of “Arts in Soi” project. In the past, we initiated a project called “Thought by the local, done by the students” which helped create public spaces with good quality. This year, similar to that project, we wanted to make the local public spaces more attractive. A rather easy way, which local people also liked, was wall painting. We couldn’t just paint about any topic. What we painted on the wall must have some connection with the community such as historical traits of the Soi.
This model is not limited to Bangkok only but can be applied to other provinces as well. We should connect each community with its historical and cultural highlights. At least, this will help remind local people about their origin.
Bangkok as we know it hardly offers any recreational areas for sports. In Makkasan, there are still lots of empty lands which can also be shared with people from other communities. These vacant spaces are under the structures of BTS Skytrain, Airport Link or Express Way. Anyone can use them. There is plenty of room.
Urban communities in Bangkok don’t have much available space left to organize activities. If we create more spaces for local people and allow outsiders to see what we are doing, it will help generate more jobs and solve PR problems for the communities. Sometimes, local efforts without outsiders’ input can be aimless.
It is quite good when outsiders come in. Local people may not see the value of their local heritage, unlike outsiders who appreciate these unique local traits and make local people see what they previously overlooked.
We try to tell them to protect their local lifestyles and not give up or feel marginalized. They have the right to have a say on their own community.
When local communities generate positive impacts, the government will notice their importance and private companies will give financial support or help create pocket zones, specialized areas or gardens under express ways. It is the collaboration between private sector, state enterprises, government and communities.
The government financially joins force with the community and let local people take part in the management. This is how local people think and we give our proposals to the government. Students help design the community.
Sustainable community administration needs to depend on three main parties. The first one is local people. The second is government entities or the municipality. The third is academic institutions. These three players must set their common goals to determine what they want to see or do in each community. Then, these shared goals will be used to design the process. They must have the same mindset first, which is the most important factor.
The essence of working for community is the will to help. There is no need to have any position. The will to help and listen to other people, on top of continual effort, will make it possible. See the big picture of the community and its lifestyle and hold on to it. The most important thing is that local people must benefit from whatever you try to do. They must earn income or have better living standard or lifestyles. With the government’s support, the community will reap the benefits and its environment will be changed for the better. This community can be a model for this country and other communities to follow suit and find a way to fix problems.
