CHAPTER ONE
The Chiltern Hills, 1938
A gypsy caravan has just gone up the hill. It has a red body splashed and scrolled with white and gold, and sets high on great wheels. Back of it are massed the Chiltern hills, rank and golden in this splendid, fetid, autumnal dying. From the porch of my caravan I can look straight across, hilltop to hilltop, looking down upon the gypsies. This porch has been constructed from the dashboard and driving seat of this van, the high green sides of which slant outwards with a wide casement at the back. A skylight has been built into the roof; a tall thin stove pipe sends whirling, trailing, gusts of smoke into the air; and huge iron wheels, half sunk in the leaf mold, support the whole structure. The gypsies are staring up the hill at me now, two of the men leaning over the white gate that separates my wood domain from the road. My heart gives a jerk of fear, not for today, because Oliver is here and Oliver is huge and strong and from his very little boyhood, has always known exactly how to calm his mother’s imaginative fear. But tonight Oliver will be gone, and the woods will be very dark and still and creep down about the caravan to peer into its windows, with a gypsy, complete with blunderbuss and stiletto, behind every tree.
“There are gypsies in the lane,” I call to him quaveringly, “I think they are coming up, and if they do, say something to me in a very loud voice.”
He nods, and I am stricken for an instant by his resemblance to his father. Louis so often looked at me with that same kindness and tolerance when I was being absurd. But I do not linger upon this thought. I have still further bulwarking of my fears to do.
“Betty”, I call, “come out. Perhaps they will think you are a boy.”

For Betty is taller than any girl I know and recently, in a freakish desire to see what she would look like, I had her hair cropped like a man’s, as I wear my own. It has made her look, to me, quite startlingly beautiful, and it amazes me that women should hide their faces and heads in these masses of curls and dangling locks at which I have looked askance, in unwilling jealousy, and with faint, deep, horror all my days. I seem to be seeing Betty for the first time. She has long, beautifully modelled cheeks with a faint hollow in them. Her eyes, too, long and with slanting lids, are more luminous without the shadowing of long hair, and look more than ever eerily and un-humanly intelligent. She comes to peer over my head at the gypsies, now gathered in a group about the gate. They are talking in a high, twanging, gibberish, gesturing towards me. The women flit back and forth, staring from vantage points between the trees. The men stand stolidly.
“Water?” one of them calls.
Now, from the smart, white modern “Trailer-caravan” further down the hill where my mother lives, so that there shall be fifty yards space, and, by so much, peace between us, our dog gives a resounding bark. Mongrel and wayfarer himself, he has ignored the loud Romany wranglings, but when English is spoken, he rumbles out a full-throated warning to beware of him!
Now that the man has spoken, an old crone thrusts herself forward. Her thin voice is like the whip of a viper, “Can we get water.”
“There is a well.” I call down to her, and point over my shoulder, further up the hill where my rain tank is. Two girls detach themselves from the group and begin to climb the hill, carrying a large churn between them. They have bright kerchiefs on their heads, banding their hair away from their brilliant faces. They are dressed in beautiful, gaudy, flowered stuffs, and they greet me unsmilingly. I indicate the bucket that they may use to fill the churn, lowering it by a rope into the cement tank, bending, lifting, pouring the water into their churn, with gestures as old as time. They thank me, meaning it, but yielding me nothing of themselves, and begin the descent of the hill carrying the heavy churn between them. Their waists are very small, and they walk with a beautiful flowing motion, from the hips, with no futile silly bending of the knees, but long steps, as far as possible from the detestable English stride.
I am greatly impressed by their treatment of me. Had I met these gypsies on the road, as I have met gypsies so many times, when trundling my family back and forth across England, in one or another of our always second-hand and outmoded cars, they would have talked with a fleering, lilting, sycophantic patter, proffering bunches of heather, or primroses, or charms and fortunes, but here they have treated me on terms of dignified equality. I am a caravanner. My nostrils lift and my underlip twists in a sardonic grin of secret delight. But my eyes close in one dark pang of misery. There has been nothing in the incident, and yet there has been the whole history of a mortal creature.
I am like them. I have something in common with Jews, and gypsies. I want to claim no country for my own, and to take the whole world in my stride. I want to move on, and on, and on. No one, but I, knows the tricks, the subterfuges, the sagely argued reasons, the elaborate befoolments with which I have uprooted my parent, and my offspring, together with the dogs, cats, fowls, or rabbit of the moment, and moved them on to sate this unconquerable urge. I do not know why I do it, nor what I seek, nor towards what bourn I am eternally pressing. I don't know. Nor do I know who it is who weeps darkly within me, longing for its “home”.
With a great jangling and creaking the gypsy caravan is in motion again. The men sit astride horses without saddles; or drive open carts from which dark, round little heads peer over a helter-skelter of rubbish; the women and girls walk behind. The bright parade winds its way up the steep road and disappears over the ridge.
Then I leave my caravan and hurry down to my mother’s, for if the space between us keeps the peace, it also serves as a pathway to the odd, eternal communings between parent and offspring, which are, as we all know, unaffected by time, or age. An old, old daughter, will hurry to a vastly old mother with a humming burthen of wonders and bewilderments as heady as the smallest daughter’s.
“Did you see the gypsies?” I ask, as that small, valiant, stalwart, hunched, white-headed one comes peering to its doorway.
“Gipsies,” she echoes in a tone of unescapable doom. “I saw them. And I heard them. They were saying your name, over and over again, back and forth to each other.”
I know that this is nonsense, yet, with something that isn’t a brain, I believe it, and shiver. She has taught me all my fears. She knows where each nerve vibrates. She believes it all; not, of course, the things that she says – this muttering back and forth, with sinister intent, of my name, by a pack of murderous gypsies; but she believes her fear. It is a miasma in her brain that has risen from those swamps in the Southern States of America where she was engendered. I have never seen them, yet I know those dark steaming stillnesses of water that slither under tropic foliage, the yawning jaws of crocodiles snap, and I stare upwards into the fathomless menace of the eyes of a negro. They are not, yet from her brain to mine flows a darkness of fear that bubbles up from the primeval slime.
From my caravan, as I return, a sonorous bass declaims at me, “What is the weather like today?” It is the voice that was to have put the fear of god into the gypsies who are now a mile away. The timing of the beneficent Oliver Marlow has ever been thus.

Une caravane de gitans vient juste de grimper la colline. Sa remorque rouge, recouverte d’éclaboussures et ornementée de blanc et or est juchée sur de grandes roues. Derrière celle-ci se massent les Chilterns, luxuriantes et mordorées dans cette décomposition splendide, fétide et automnale. De la véranda de ma caravane mon regard domine tout, d’une colline à l'autre, et plonge sur les gitans. Le tableau de bord et le siège du conducteur de cette caravane ont servi à construire cette véranda, les côtés verts et élevés de ce dernier s'inclinant obliquement vers l'extérieur avec un large châssis à l'arrière. Une lucarne se loge dans le toit ; un long et mince tuyau de poêle envoie des tourbillons, des traînées, des bouffées de fumée dans les airs ; et d’immenses roues en fer, à moitié enfoncées dans le terreau, soutiennent toute la structure. Les gitans me fixent du bas de la colline à présent, deux des hommes sont appuyés sur la barrière blanche qui sépare mon domaine boisé de la route. Mon cœur tressaille de peur, non pour aujourd’hui, car Oliver est ici et Oliver est immense et fort et depuis même l’enfance a toujours su exactement calmer les peurs imaginaires de sa mère. Mais ce soir, Oliver sera parti, les bois seront bien sombres et tranquilles et avanceront furtivement aux abords de la caravane, épiant au travers des fenêtres, et puis un gitan, équipé tout entier de tromblon et de dague, surgira de chaque arbre.
« Il y a des gitans sur le chemin,» lui dis-je d’une voix tremblotante, « je pense qu’ils s'approchent, et si c’est bien le cas, dis-moi quelque chose d’une voix forte. »
Il acquiesce, et je suis frappée l’espace d’un instant combien il ressemble à son père. Louis me regardait si souvent avec la même expression de gentillesse et de tolérance lorsque je me montrais absurde. Mais je ne m'attarde pas sur cette pensée. J'ai encore à barricader nombre de mes peurs.
« Betty, » j’appelle, « montre-toi. Peut-être qu'ils penseront que tu es un garçon. »

Car Betty est la plus grande de toutes les filles que je connaisse et récemment, ayant eu l’envie aberrante de voir à quoi elle ressemblerait, j’ai fait couper ses cheveux comme pour un homme, comme je les porte. Selon moi, cela la fait paraître d’une beauté particulièrement saisissante, et je suis surprise que les femmes cachent leur visage dans ces masses de boucles et ces mèches en cascade que j’ai toujours considérées avec une certaine perplexité, et bien malgré moi avec jalousie, ainsi qu'une horreur voilée et profonde. Il me semble voir Betty pour la première fois. Ses joues sont longues et joliment modelées, ornementées d’une vague fossette. Ses yeux, aussi, longs et aux paupières obliques, s'illuminent débarrassés de l’ombre jetée par de longs cheveux, et semblent plus que jamais pleins d'une inhumaine et étrange intelligence. Elle s’approche et observe par-dessus ma tête les gitans, à présent regroupés autour de la barrière. Ils parlent haut, d’une voix nasillarde, en charabia, et font des gestes dans ma direction. Les femmes vont et viennent prestement, fixant distinctement leur regard sur des points entre les arbres. Les hommes restent impavides.
« De l’eau ? » demande l’un d’entre eux.
À l'instant, depuis l’élégante caravane blanche et moderne plus en bas dans la colline où vit ma mère afin que quarante-cinq mètres nous séparent et qu'autant de paix soit entre nous, notre chien lance un aboiement sonore. Bâtard et voyageur lui-même, il a bien ignoré les querelles bruyantes des Romanis, mais lorsqu’il entend l’anglais, il émet un grondement d’avertissement bien senti du fond de la gorge en signe d'avertissement !
À présent que l’homme a parlé, une vieille sorcière s’avance avec véhémence. Sa voix grêle a le cinglement d’une vipère, « On peut avoir de l’eau ? »
« Il y a un puits. » Je l'appelle et lui indique par-dessus mon épaule, un peu plus loin sur la colline ma réserve d’eau de pluie. Deux filles se détachent du groupe et commencent à grimper la colline, portant ensemble un grand bidon. Elles portent de grands fichus vifs sur la tête, retenant leurs cheveux sur leur visage brillant. Elles sont vêtues de beaux habits de couleur criarde et fleuris et me saluent sans sourire. J’indique le seau dont elles peuvent se servir pour remplir leur bidon, en le faisant descendre par une corde dans la citerne en ciment, en se penchant, soulevant, versant l’eau dans leur bidon, avec des gestes aussi vieux que le temps. Elles me remercient, avec sincérité, mais sans plus révéler d’elles-mêmes, et commencent à descendre la colline tout en portant le bidon par deux. Leur taille est fine et leur pas a l’allure belle et flottante, naissant des hanches, sans plier bêtement et futilement les genoux, plutôt à grands pas, qui se distingue autant que possible de la marche détestable des Anglais.
La façon dont ils me traitent me touche fortement. Si j’avais rencontré ces gitans sur la route, comme cela s’est produit maintes fois, en bringuebalant ma petite famille à travers l’Angleterre, à bord de nos carrioles toujours démodées et d’occasion, ils se seraient adressés à moi d’un boniment railleur, cadencé et flagorneur, me présentant des brassées de bruyère, ou des primevères, ou des porte-bonheurs ou des amulettes, mais ici ils m’ont traitée dignement en égale. Je suis caravanière. Mes narines s'élargissent et ma lèvre inférieure se plie en un rictus sardonique de joie secrète. Mais mes yeux se referment sur un sombre tiraillement de tristesse. Il ne s’est rien vraiment passé dans cet incident, pourtant l’histoire entière d’une mortelle créature s’y trouve.
Je suis comme eux. J'ai ceci de commun avec les Juifs, et les Gitans. Je ne me réclame d'aucun pays, et désire embrasser le monde en allant, comme il se présente. Tout ce que je veux c'est avancer, toujours, avancer. Personne d'autre que moi ne connaît les astuces, les subterfuges, les raisons consciencieusement étayées, les duperies élaborées avec lesquels j'ai extirpé ma mère, mes enfants ainsi que les chiens, chats, gibiers ou lapin du moment, et les ai emmenés afin de satisfaire ce désir profond et invaincu. Je ne sais pourquoi je fais cela, ni ce qui me pousse, ni vers quelle destination je me destine sans fin. Je ne sais pas. Je ne connais pas non plus cette femme qui sanglote sombrement à l'intérieur de moi, en quête de son propre foyer.
Avec de grands cliquetis et des craquements la caravane gitane repart. Les hommes s'asseyent à califourchon sur des chevaux sans selle ; ou conduisent des charrettes ouvertes desquelles de petites têtes rondes et noires scrutent un pêle-mêle de détritus ; les femmes et filles marchent à leur suite. La parade chamarrée s’en va s'éloignant en lacet sur la route abrupte et disparaît derrière la côte.
Je quitte alors ma caravane et me dépêche vers celle de ma mère, car si l’espace qui nous sépare est synonyme de paix, il sert également de passage aux échanges continuels entre parent et progéniture, qui sont, comme nous le savons bien, imperméables au temps ou à l’âge. Une fille vieille, bien vieille s’empresse à la rencontre d’une mère considérablement vieille dans un refrain bourdonnant d’émerveillements et de confusion aussi entêtant que celui de la plus jeune fille.
« Tu as vu les gitans ?» Demandé-je tandis que cette petite tête blanche, vaillante, loyale et voûtée jette un coup d'œil à l'entrée de sa porte.
« Les gitans », répond-elle en écho d’un ton empreint de catastrophe inéluctable. « Je les ai vus. Et je les ai entendus. Ils disaient ton nom, et se le sont répété, répété, l’un à l’autre. »
Je sais que c’est ridicule, et pourtant, le percevant de manière non cérébrale, je le crois et je frémis. Elle m’a appris toutes mes peurs. Elle sait là où vibre chaque nerf. Elle y croit entièrement ; non pas, bien sûr ce qu’elle dit – ce marmonnement incessant, d'une sinistre intention, de mon nom, par une bande de gitans meurtriers ; mais elle croit sa peur. C’est un miasme de son cerveau surgi de ces marécages des États du Sud des États-Unis où elle fut engendrée. Je n’en ai jamais vus et pourtant, je connais ces sombres quiétudes vaporeuses d’eau glissant sous des feuillages tropicaux, les coups de mâchoires bâillantes des crocodiles, et figée, j’aperçois là-haut, les yeux d’un nègre remplis d’une menace insondable. Ils n’existent pas, pourtant de son cerveau au mien coule une pénombre toute faite de peur comme des bulles qui remontent à la surface toutes droit sorties de la vase primitive.
De ma caravane, comme je m’en retourne, une basse retentissante me déclame, « Quel temps fait-il aujourd’hui ? » C’est la voix qui aurait dû inspirer la peur de dieu chez ces gitans qui à présent s’éloignent, un bon kilomètre de là. Oliver Marlow le bienfaisant a toujours su paraître au bon moment.

Not only did Bonaparte receive daily bulletins on the piecemeal erosion of his army, but he also had to face an epidemic of resignations. At about the same time as Kleber requested his recall, Menou listed his grievances in a long and caustic letter. `If this is what you call administration, all the notions I have acquired in the course of my life must be wrong, and I must beg you to relieve me of my post', wrote the incensed commandant of Rosetta. Bonaparte paid no attention. Impervious to insult, he invariably managed to calm down those whom he needed. When he did not need a man, he was more compliant and less forgiving.
During the initial stages of the campaign, the discontented generals had selected General Dumas as their mouthpiece. Imbued with strong republican principles but no intellectual giant, Dumas was simple enough to express his and his fellow generals' feelings with ill-advised bluntness. He came close to rebellion— yet Bonaparte, after threatening to have him shot, chose to forgive him. In the following months, and especially during the Cairo rebellion, Dumas performed prodigies of bravery that might seem exaggerated in one of his son's novels. It has been said that he was worth an entire army. He could perform some amazing feats of strength; there is a tradition that, sitting astride his horse, and grasping with both hands a beam in the ceiling of the stable, he could lift his horse between his thighs. He could also stick four fingers of one hand into four rifle barrels and carry the four weapons at the end of his outstretched arm. His amorous prowess was commensurate; his courage was legendary.
His ferocity and beauty earned him names `the Black Devil' in the Tyrol and `the Angel' in Egypt. As a tactician, he sometimes displayed ingenuity. Once, in Austria, when some infantrymen were unable to scale a palisade, the general simply picked them up and threw them across it one by one, thus putting the terrified Austrians to rout. With these qualifications, he may have been regarded as a valuable man but not as an indispensable one.
Dumas, though born and raised in Santo Domingo, felt an overwhelming nostalgia for France. The climate of Egypt was bad for his health, he told Dr. Desgenettes; could not Desgenettes issue him a certificate of ill health and help him return to France? Desgenettes reported on this interview to Bonaparte. `I can easily replace him with a brigadier', said Bonaparte, and let him go. But it was the end of Dumas'S career.

Dans les mois qui suivirent, et particulièrement lors de la révolte du Caire, Dumas accomplit des prodiges de courage qui pourraient paraître exagérés sous la plume de son fils. On a dit de lui qu’il valait une armée entière. Il pouvait réaliser des tours de force époustouflants ; on raconte que, chevauchant sa monture et agrippant la poutre du plafond à pleines mains il pouvait soulever son cheval par la force de ses cuisses. Il pouvait aussi enfoncer les quatre doigts de sa main dans quatre canons de fusils et porter les quatre armes au bout de son bras tendu. Ses prouesses amoureuses étaient commensurables et son courage légendaire.
Sa férocité et sa beauté lui valurent les noms de « diable noir » au Tyrol et d’« ange » en Égypte. Comme tacticien il faisait parfois preuve d’ingéniosité. Une fois, en Autriche, alors que des soldats de l’infanterie ne pouvaient escalader une palissade, le général les souleva tout simplement et les lança au-dessus un par un, semant ainsi la débandade parmi les autrichiens terrifiés. Fort de ces qualifications il eut pu être considéré comme un homme de valeur mais non comme un élément indispensable.
Dumas, bien que né et élevé à Saint Domingue éprouvait une nostalgie écrasante pour la France. Le climat égyptien était mauvais pour sa santé confia-t-il au Dr Desgenettes, ne pourrait-il pas lui délivrer un certificat de maladie et l’aider à revenir en France ? Desgenettes rapporta cet entretien à Bonaparte. « Je peux facilement le remplacer par un brigadier », dit Bonaparte et il le laissa partir. Mais ce fut la fin de la carrière de Dumas.

Source text - Dutch De installatie van een nieuwe donordatabase bleek uiteindelijk een zeer tijdrovend en energievretend dossier te zijn. Oorspronkelijk was gehoopt om dit dossier af te ronden begin 2013, maar het heeft uiteindelijk nog heel het jaar in beslag genomen om te komen tot een basisinstrument waar we mee kunnen werken. Gedurende het eerste semester zullen de nieuwe mogelijkheden die deze database ons nu biedt volop verkend en uitgetest worden. Deze onvoorziene moeilijkheden zullen ons wel inspireren om in 2014 een dialoog op te starten met onze consultant DSC om onze manier van samenwerken te herbekijken en te verbeteren.
Ook voor het communicatieteam van persattachés, editors en webmaster was 2013 een rijk gevuld jaar (details: zie verder in dit rapport). De twee grote humanitaire urgenties zorgden voor heel wat bedrijvigheid op onze website en sociale media (Facebook, Twitter) en betekenden een grote stimulans voor onze aanwezigheid in de Belgische pers en media. Onze web- en mediacijfers voor 2013 gaan dan ook opnieuw sterk de hoogte in na het zwakke 2012. Het communicatieteam is anno 2013 goed afgestemd op het geven van ondersteuning voor onze fondsenwerving (redactie direct mailings, corporate webpagina’s, campagnes enz…) en dit zal de komende jaren nog verfijnd en gestimuleerd worden. De samenwerking met de Federatie tijdens grote urgenties blijft evenwel zwaar problematisch (zie verder).

Ces deux urgences humanitaires ont entraîné une forte augmentation de l'activité sur notre site Internet et sur nos pages des réseaux sociaux (Facebook, Twitter) et ont fortement accru notre présence dans la presse et dans les médias belges. En contraste avec la baisse de niveau en 2012, nos chiffres Internet et médias pour 2013 recommencent à grimper. En 2013, l'équipe de communications s'est attelée à soutenir notre collecte de fonds (rédaction de mails directs, page web de la société, campagnes, etc.) et elle compte bien affiner et développer ce travail au cours des prochaines années. Toutefois, la collaboration avec la Fédération lors des grandes urgences continue de poser problème (voir ci-dessous).
