They are all great players – and all are heading home from 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™ after their teams bowed out at the end of the group stage. It is a shame for them and for the tournament because we all like to see the best players on show. Petr Cech has few rivals for the title of world’s best goalkeeper and deserves to be the last line of our defence. Kasey Keller of the USA and Japan’s Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi both pulled off great saves when their teams were under pressure but Cech, although he perhaps did not show it at this tournament, belongs in the elite band of goalkeepers.

In defence we have gone for the highly impressive Arsenal right back Emmanuel Eboue who played every minute of Côte d'Ivoire’s three games. In the middle, Croatia captain Robert Kovac and Nemanja Vidic of Serbia and Montenegro - who could not bring his defensive strength and height to bear on Serbia and Montenegro’s behalf because of suspension and injury - would present a solid partnership in front of Cech. At left back, Korea Republic’s Lee Young-Pyo wins the vote.

In midfield places have to be found for Pavel Nedved who gave his all for the Czech Republic in their defeat by Italy which cost them a qualifying berth. Team-mate Tomas Rosikcy is another “must” after his two goals against the US. Filling the other midfield places are Dwight Yorke, who adapted superbly to his defensive midfield duties and leads the “stats table” for tackles made, and Japanese star Hidetoshi Nakata.

In attack, Milan Baros warrants consideration as do Paraguay’s best known player, Roque Santa Cruz, and Iran's world record goalscorer Ali Daei. But Didier Drogba is one of the world’s best known players and deserves his place in our eleven after the skill, effort and leadership he has demonstrated on behalf of the Ivorians. Alongside him Mateja Kezman - an outstanding striker for club and country – wins our vote.

Petr Cech ha pochi rivali nella gara al miglior portiere del mondo e merita di essere l’ultimo baluardo della nostra difesa. Lo statunitense Kasey Keller e il giapponese Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi hanno entrambe effettuato delle parate grandiose quando le loro squadre erano in difficoltà, ma Cech, anche se non lo ha dimostrato in questo torneo, appartiene all’elite dei portieri.

In difesa abbiamo scelto lo straordinario difensore destro dell’Arsenal Emmanuel Eboue che ha giocato tutte e tre le partite della Costa d’Avorio. In difesa centrale il capitano della Croazia Robert Kovac e Nemanja Vidic della Serbia Montenegro, che non ha potuto dare il suo apporto in difesa alla Serbia Montenegro a causa di una squalifica e di un infortunio; questi due giocatori rappresenterebbe un ottimo supporto a Cech. A sinistra sempre in difesa, si è aggiudicato i nostri favori il coreano Lee Young-Pyo.

A centrocampo troviamo Pavel Nedved che si è espresso al massimo per la sua Repubblica Ceca durante la partita con l’Italia e che gli è costata la qualificazione. Il suo compagno di squadra, Tomas Rosikcy, è un altro “must” dopo i due gol rifilati agli USA. Gli altri posti a centrocampo sono per Dwight Yorke, che ha svolto in maniera eccellente il suo ruolo e guida le statistiche per i tackles effettuati, e la star giapponese Hidetoshi Nakata.

In attacco, Milan Baros merita considerazione così come il giocatore più famoso del Paraguay, Roque Santa Cruz e il marcatore e recordman mondiale dell’Iran's Ali Daei. Ma Didier Drogba è uno dei giocatori più famosi al mondo e merita il suo posto nei nostri undici titolari dopo gli sforzi, le capacità e la leadership dimostrate nella sua squadra (Costa d’Avorio). Accanto a lui abbiamo scelto di mettere Mateja Kezman, un attaccante di prim’ordine per il club dove milita e per la Nazionale.
