Source text - English 6. Why are young people important in the globalisation debate?
Young people's experience of globalisation is extremely complex and diverse. How one is affected by globalisation depends on intersecting factors such as gender, nationality, religion, ethnicity, sexuality and education.
1. Many young people are at the sharp end of globalisation. While youth are at the centre of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, trade rules are only now addressing the impact of inaccessible HIV/AIDS medicines . Ninety percent of workers in Export Processing Zones (EPZs) are women; the majority of them are young . Between now and 2010, 700 million young people will enter the labor force in developing countries. The International Labor Organization projects more than a billion jobs will need to be created to accommodate these new workers and reduce unemployment .
Young farmers in developing countries are failing to compete with the heavily subsidised prices of US and European crops . Debt repayments and the move to privatisation have pushed primary, secondary and tertiary education out of reach for millions of young people . A global youth culture is in conflict with traditional identity, and connection to cultural roots.
Globalisation is also offering other young people untold opportunity.
Technology has given young people the means to communicate across the world. Increasingly, young people are aware of–and able to demand–their human rights. The globalisation of sustainable development has meant that young people can protect their environmental heritage. A generation of young people in developed nations has greater wealth, opportunity and choice.

These impacts are magnified by the fact that young people are, globally, the largest single demographic group, with more than one billion young people aged 15–24. However, more than 85 percent of these young people live in developing countries, where the impacts are more negative than positive.

La experiencia de los jóvenes en el proceso de la globalización es extremadamente compleja y diversa. La forma en la que cada individuo se ve afectado por la globalización depende de factores interrelacionados tales como el género, la nacionalidad, religión, grupo étnico, sexualidad y la educación.
1. Varios jóvenes son los que se llevan la peor parte de la globalización. Mientras que gran parte de la juventud se encuentra en el centro de la pandemia del VIH/SIDA, las reglas comerciales actualmente se están concentrando en resolver el impacto de las medicinas contra el VIH/SIDA imposibles de conseguir. El noventa por ciento de los trabajadores en las Zonas de Procesamiento de Exportación (EPZ por sus siglas en inglés) son mujeres; la mayoría de ellas jóvenes. A partir de este año y hasta el 2010, 700 millones de jóvenes entrarán a la fuerza de trabajo en los países en vías de desarrollo. La Organización Internacional del Trabajo tiene previsto que se necesitarán crear más de mil millones de empleos para colocar a estos nuevos trabajadores y reducir el desempleo.
Los jóvenes agricultores en los países en vías de desarrollo no tienen la capacidad de competir con los precios altamente subsidiados de las cosechas de los Estados Unidos y de Europa. Los pagos de la deuda y el cambio hacia la privatización han dejado a la educación primaria, secundaria y terciaria fuera del alcance de millones de jóvenes. La cultura juvenil se encuentra en conflicto con la identidad tradicional y la conexión con las raíces culturales.
La globalización también le ofrece a los jóvenes oportunidades sin precedentes.
La tecnología les ha brindado a los jóvenes la oportunidad de comunicarse en todas partes del mundo. La juventud está cada vez más consciente, y por lo tanto tiene la capacidad de exigir que se respeten sus derechos humanos. La globalización de un desarrollo sostenible significa que los jóvenes puedan proteger su herencia ambiental. Una generación de jóvenes en las naciones desarrolladas tiene mayor riqueza, más oportunidades y más opciones.

Tales impactos se hacen más grandes debido al hecho de que los jóvenes son el mayor grupo demográfico a nivel mundial, con más de mil millones de jóvenes entre los 15 y los 24 años de edad.
