Source text - English The World is a Sound Garden:
Notes on Ryuichi Sakamoto and A Non-History of East Asian Modern Noise
How do we locate the disjunction between the constitution of a modern Western sound history in art with the evolution and development of a non-Western non-history of modern noise and technology in art that encompasses multiple geographies and divides into a variety of spaces that occupy what artist and composer Ryuichi Sakamoto identifies as the ‘boundary between sound and noise, between sound and silence, and the interstices of sound and image’?
Sakamoto once said that he ‘opens his ears to the world’ in order to find new ways to describe it. History, it would seem, also has a sound that requires further listening and translation: perhaps we could call it a ‘non-history’ that expands on theorist Dipesh Chakrabarty’s hypothesis that all history is European history. And therefore, in the context that allows Sakamoto to listen to a cloud, we must also be open to listening to the subtle hum of a more complex alternative audiovisual art ‘history’ in order to examine the key modernising forces and ideas that have informed and influenced Sakamoto’s artistic practice.
