Translation - English Ever since the Green Revolution started, the usage of nitrogen fertilizer became higher in order to increase productivity and to produce more food products. In every meal that we take today – chicken, apple, spinach, carrot, rice – we consume nitrogen. Plants, especially grown for food are unable to grow without nitrogen that exists in the soil. Natural nitrogen cycles supply nitrogen in the soil for the plant’s need, but due to the limited amount of nitrogen existence in the soil, the farmers cannot yield high productions; furthermore nitrogen supply in the soil will deplete with intensive farming. Farmers will have to add organic fertilizer, grow legumes or move to a more fertile land. However, more than 100 years ago, a technical innovation which was able to produce synthetic nitrogen in high volume with low cost was discovered.
An important finding by Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch from Germany solved the problem of limited natural nitrogen supply and made food crops industries grew rapidly by starting industrial nitrogen fertilizer.
For more than 60 years, farmers all over the world have been using synthetic nitrogen in the form of ammonium nitrate and urea. Today, 90% of nitrogen element which is being used in food farming comes from urea. Nitrogen has successfully increased crops yields in a few decades after it was introduced.
Eutrophication is a problem of losing dissolved oxygen from water sources i.e. lakes, rivers or oceans caused by nitrogen surface runoff into the water sources. Nitrogen encourages high growth of algae and reduces amount of marine lives such as fishes due to low dissolved oxygen. The water will appear green, red or brown in colour because of algae blooms over the water surface.
