Malay to English: A Malay Boy Growing Up in a Religious School- Pedagogy General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
Translation - English I was born in 1996 nonetheless I could feel the rapid progress and flourishing development that was happening in Malaysia as an irresistible move towards the vision of Malaysia in 2020. Yet the infrequently-asked-question here is, has this development that was maximizing day by day contributes in treating the conflict of assabiah between races and religions in Malaysia? As someone who was educated in a Muslim community and had never mixed with people excluding Malays since kindergarten until university, I feel that my experience in seeking for the meaning of understanding and harmony between people and religions is tremendously interesting to share with. Most of it was mainly contributed from the story of the people who surrounded my life. Since childhood, I lived with the doctrine (directly or indirectly) that my race, Malay, is a nation that has more favorable or superior position and advantages compared to the other races and that mixing with the opposite divergent nations will only lead to the collapse of my faith. As a result, my way of thinking was very skeptical towards the races apart from Malay nation. Moreover I had never associated with people from different races aside from Malays during my school time resulted from the institution I had been educated that is in a school of homage to Islamic religion and the same goes to my university’s education. Hence, I have to act "independently" in searching for the meaning of unity among the nation in our country and inter-religious harmony among them.
