English to Indonesian: Australia in the Asian Century General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Government / Politics
Source text - English Australia in the Asian Century
The world is undergoing dramatic changes, as the nations of Asia rise to even greater prominence. This rise is what is likely to make this 21st century the ‘Asian century’, one that looks set to have a profound impact throughout the world. Whatever its impact else¬where, however, it has already had far-reaching implications for Australia’s economy, and these will certainly continue for the foreseeable future.
What can Australia do to respond to these historic changes, to ensure success in the Asian century? The Australian government has identified some vital areas for action:
• Regardless of how the Asian century progresses, to remain prosperous we must build on our strengths, concentrating on areas where our performance is already good. Our society is founded on fairness for all and an open economy, but these foundations need to be constantly reinforced: for instance, by enhancing skills training and educat¬ion; by ensuring that our national infrastructure does not become too outdated; by striving to become leaders in innov¬ation; and by reforms that maintain the fairness of our taxation system while not depriving the government of adequate revenue.
• Further, we must understand that success demands a more capable workforce, one in which all Australians are able to make a significant and more productive contribution. (...)
Translation - Indonesian Australia dalam Abad Asia

The present investigation was carried out to evaluate the biochemical effect of Withania somnifera Linn. Solanaceae, commonly known as ashwagandha on adjuvant induced arthritic rats. Results were compared to Indomethacin, a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Arthritis was induced by an intra dermal injection of Complete Freund’s Adjuvant (0.1 ml) into the right hind paw of Wistar albino rats. Withania somnifera root powder (1000 mg/kg/day) and Indomethacin (3 mg/kg/day) were orally administered for 8 days (from 11th to 18th day) after adjuvant injection. After the experimental period, all the animals were sacrificed and serum, liver and spleen samples were collected for further biochemical analysis. A significant increase in the activities of gluconeogenic enzymes, tissue marker enzymes, blood glucose level, white blood cell count (WBC), platelet count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and acute phase proteins (hyaluronic acid, fibrinogen and ceruloplasmin) was observed in adjuvant-induced arthritic rats, whereas the activities of glycolytic enzymes, body weight, levels of hemoglobin, red blood cell count (RBC), and packed cell volume were found to be decreased. These biochemical alterations observed in arthritic animals were ameliorated significantly after the administration of Withania somnifera root powder (1000 mg/kg/b.wt) and Indomethacin (3 mg/kg/b.wt). Our results suggest that Withania somnifera root powder is capable of rectifying the above biochemical changes in adjuvant arthritis and it may prove to be useful in treating rheumatoid arthritis.

2. Department of Medical Biochemistry, University of Madras, Taramani Campus,Chennai-113, India

Smoking is known as a variable that can be changed through a specific intervention activity. Recently in Indonesia, research related to chronic complication among elderly with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) was not available. This research has objective in exploring the risk of smoking towards chronic complication among elderly with type 2 DM. This research was using Riskesdas in 2007. Riskesdas is a representative Indonesia Health Survey. 1565 elderly (aged 60++ years) with type 2 DM have selected by random. 70-80% of the elderly have Chronic Complications and 32.11% of the sample is smokers. The elderly who smoke more than 24 cigarettes per day have risk 2.5 (95% CI, 1.54-3.97), smoker 1-12 cigarettes per day, and smoker 13-24 cigarettes per day have risk 1.3 and 1.6 respectively to get chronic complication compared with those who do not smoke, controlled by age, obesity, and physical activity. The proportion of smokers among elderly with type 2 DM is high, most of them are low education, low socioeconomic status, lack of access to the health services, low of physical activity, and low consume vegetables and fruit. Smoking increases the risk of chronic complication of type 2 DM.

Fakultas Kesehatan Masyarakat, Universitas Indonesia, Kampus UI Depok 16424, Indonesia
Merokok meningkatkan resiko komplikasi kronis DM tipe 2.
