In å være aktiv

Translation - English IT workers in Bergen 'exercise' on the job
Departments at XXX, YYY and ZZZ in Sandsli, Bergen partake in a joint programme called TrimIT. 'In Bergen, the community is sufficiently small that the three IT entities operate closely, both from a work perspective, as well as in HS&E and social events’, says Dag xxxxxxxxxx, who has become the driving force behind the TrimIT sessions.
Legs begin to move almost automatically when music from "The Blues Brothers" strikes the rhythmic senses of the 'Trim Gang'. With memorised steps that everyone is able to follow, the arms follow eagerly, and the heart rate is pushed up.
When everyone is warmed up the exercise bands are brought out. Blue and black elastic exercise bands are stretched around the back, over the head, infront, around the feet and around the arms - bend, stretch, go for it! It starts to take effect.
Now finished with the exercise, the body needs to be stretched out. The mouse arm gets special attention. The body gets yoga.
'We try to run the group exercise session on Tuesday and Thursday at quarter past 10’, says Dag, who sends out an email reminder on 'exercise' days. He rings a bell when they are about to begin. Some come straight away, whilst others need a gentle nudge from colleagues before they manage to tear themselves away from their work for a short moment.

Important to be active.
It is not just the IT workers who take exercise breaks in Sandsli. 'Some departments have even hired in exercise professionals. However, I do not know if it is so much better than what we have. The participants know our programme, and they do not want it to change - if it does I get told off. People like it to be predictable. Then it is comfortable and harmless to attend. There is a lot of banter and joking during the sessions, and it seems that people are enjoying them', says Dag.
There are some who also take a 20 minute walk around the office building if the weather is nice. Sometimes a group get together and go on a longer walk after business hours.
'In the spring last year there was a good crowd from IT who went up the steep Stolzekleiven trail, a then further to Fløyen. On one of the lovely autumn days, the IT department arranged a trip up Løvstakken. We started at 3 o'clock and walked as a group.’
'It is both healthy and social to exercise together, whether it happens in the office or in people’s spare time', concludes Dag.
