Slovak to English: DNA General field: Other Detailed field: Biology (-tech,-chem,micro-)
Source text - Slovak Like other rodents, squirrels have four front teeth that never stop growing so they don't wear down from the constant gnawing. Tree squirrels are the types most commonly recognized, often seen gracefully scampering and leaping from branch to branch.
Other species are ground squirrels that live in burrow or tunnel systems, where some hibernate during the winter season.
First, researchers made XNA building blocks to six different genetic systems by replacing the natural sugar component of DNA with one of six different polymers, synthetic chemical compounds.
The team—led by Vitor Pinheiro of the U.K.'s Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology—then evolved enzymes, called polymerases, that can make XNA from DNA, and others that can change XNA back into DNA.
This copying and translating ability allowed for genetic sequences to be copied and passed down again and again—artificial heredity.
Last, the team determined that HNA, one of the six XNA polymers, could respond to selective pressure in a test tube.
As would be expected for DNA, the stressed HNA evolved into different forms.
Ako prvé, vedci vytvorili XNA stavebné bloky do šiestich rozličných genetických systémov nahradením zložky prírodného cukru DNA s jedným zo šiestich rozličných polymérov, syntetickými chemickými zlúčeninami.
Táto schopnosť kopírovať a prekladať povoľuje genetickým sekvenciám, aby boli kopírované a odovzdávané znovu a znovu - t.j. umelá dedičnosť.
Slovak to English: Titanic Detailed field: History
Source text - Slovak In recent years explorers like James Cameron and Paul-Henry Nargeolet have brought back increasingly vivid pictures of the wreck. Yet we’ve mainly glimpsed the site as though through a keyhole, our view limited by the dreck suspended in the water and the ambit of a submersible’s lights. Never have we been able to grasp the relationships between all the disparate pieces of wreckage. Never have we taken the full measure of what’s down there.
Until now. In a tricked-out trailer on a back lot of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), William Lange stands over a blown-up sonar survey map of the Titanic site–a meticulously stitched-together mosaic that has taken months to construct. At first look the ghostly image resembles the surface of the moon, with innumerable striations in the seabed, as well as craters caused by boulders dropped over millennia from melting icebergs.
On closer inspection, though, the site appears to be littered with man-made detritus—a Jackson Pollock-like scattering of lines and spheres, scraps and shards. Lange turns to his computer and points to a portion of the map that has been brought to life by layering optical data onto the sonar image.
Translation - English V posledných rokoch, prieskumníci ako James Cameron a Paul-Henry Nargeolet, priniesli späť stále živé obrazy vraku. Napriek tomu sme zazreli miesto hlavne akoby cez kľúčovú dierku.
