Source text - Italian Oxford meglio di Cambridge?
Oxford è la città universitaria più antica dell'Inghilterra, situata a circa 80 km ad ovest di Londra. Si trova nella contea dello Oxfordshire e la sue sponde sono bagnate dal Tamigi, il fiume piu' importante del Regno Unito.
Insieme a Cambridge, Oxford rappresenta l'istituzione accademica della Gran Bretagna: la sua universita', composta da 39 college, e' la piu' antica del Regno Unito e celebre in tutto il mondo. Ma non solo: molte industrie sono presenti in questa regione, tra le quali la fabbrica della Mini che si trova a pochi chilometri di distanza, nel sobborgo di Cowley.
Arriviamo in auto da Cambridge in una giornata mite, soleggiata. Per nostra sfortuna e' anche una giornata condizionata dallo sciopero del settore pubblico che in questi giorni sta creando caos in Inghilterra: scuole ed enti pubblici sono chiusi e molte famiglie sono a spasso per la citta' riempiendo bars e ristoranti, oltre che negozi e centri commerciali.
Trovare un parcheggio ad Oxford e' un impresa quasi impossibile con prezzi che salgono alle stelle man mano ci si avvicina al centro: molto meglio posteggiare l'auto in zone periferiche ed utilizzare i bus per raggiungere l'area pedonale.
A differenza di Cambridge, Oxford da subito l'impressione di essere più caotica, con molta più gente, con meno zone "tranquille". Rimane comunque il fascino della città universitaria, dove gli studenti si spostano in bicicletta, dove i pubs sono frequentati da intellettuali, professori e scienziati.
Trovare un luogo appartato in cui pranzare o cenare non e' sempre facile in quanto ristoranti e pub sono quasi sempre affollati: per fortuna, chiedendo in giro e seguendo i consigli della Lonely Planet, si trova sempre qualcosa di carino e caratteristico dove consumare un tipico piatto inglese.
La giornata di sole facilità senza dubbio la visita a piedi della citta': camminiamo per ore, visitando i principali musei e chiese, ma sopratutto i college più importanti tra i quali spiccano Balliol University e Merton Colleges risalenti addirittura al tredicesimo secolo e considerati i più antichi della città.
Cio' che si nota maggiormente all'interno degli istituti accademici e' il silenzio e la quiete che regnano in cortili e atri: e' una sensazione simile a quella che si prova visitando un seminario, un convento.
Come si puo' immaginare, nei vari college tutto e' in ordine e perfino l'erba dei giardini e' tenuta in modo maniacale. Si riesce davvero ad immedesimarsi nella vita delle migliaia di studenti che frequentano queste aule, questi spazzi, questi giardini: e' come trovarsi sul set di un film cinematografico quale, per esempio, l'attimo fuggente.
Il mezzo migliore per apprezzare le bellezze architettoniche e naturali di Oxford e' indubbiamente a piedi: camminare per ore, girovagando senza meta, permette di scoprire angoli nascosti e poco affollati della città.
Per fortuna usiamo le scarpe Stonefly: queste calzature, fin troppo comode, ci permettono di camminare a lungo, in modo facile, veloce e senza risentire dei soliti dolori ai piedi, gambe o schiena. Perfette e consigliate a tutti coloro che camminano molto, non solo in viaggio.
Ma allora Oxford e' meglio di Cambridge? Personalmente trovo Cambridge una citta' piu' a misura d'uomo, meno commerciale, con un'atmosfera piu' intima, raccolta. Difficile comunque fare una netta distinzione tra le due localita' essendo molto simili tra loro.
Cosa vedere: inutile elencare le varie attrazioni turistiche della citta', lasciando questo compito ad altri siti specializzati del settore o a guide turistiche come la Lonely Planet. Sicuramente da non perdere, oltre ai vari college, il Museo Ashmolean, il più antico d'Europa e il più prestigioso della città: al suo interno, tra le altre collezioni, si possono ammirare opere di Raffaello e Michelangelo.
Dormire: si trova un po' di tutto ad Oxford, dall'ostello con camerate ad hotels a cinque stelle. Non mancano alloggi di medio livello, dove una camera doppia costa €50 a notte, con bagno privato, rifiniture di buon gusto, letti confortevoli, posizione centrale e con colazione inclusa nel prezzo.
Pasti: nonostante ad Oxford si trovi di tutto, personalmente prediligo i pubs, dove spendendo poco si mangia bene, in un'ambiente rilassato, informale, magari circondati da intellettuali e studiosi.
Come arrivarci:
Autobus
Dalla stazione di Victoria Coach Station a Londra (poco distante da quella dei treni) ci sono numerosi autobus che partono per Oxford: il tempo di percorrenza e' di circa un'ora e trenta minuti. Costo biglietto: 10£ solo andata e da 12 a 15£ andata e ritorno
Treno
I treni in direzione Oxford partono dalla stazione di Paddington a Londra (andata e ritorno a partire da 17 £) e sono molto frequenti (uno ogni mezz'ora)
Auto
Seguire le indicazioni per l'autostrada M4 e successivamente quelli per Oxford. Trovare un parceggio ad Oxford e' un'incubo: come accennato nell'articolo, meglio lasciare l'auto in periferia e prendere un bus per il centro

Oxford is the most antique academic city in England, situated approximately 80 kilometers west of London. It’s located in the Oxfordshire County and its banks are bathed by the river Thames, the most important river in the UK.
Along with Cambridge, Oxford represents the academic institution of Great Britain: its university composed of 39 colleges is the most antique of the United Kingdom and famous in the whole world. Not only: many industries are present in this region including the MINI factory which is located few kilometers away, in the Cowley suburb.
We are arriving in Cambridge by car on a temperate (mild), sunny day. For our misfortune (bad luck) it is also the day conditioned by the strike of the public field which is creating chaos these days in England: schools and public institutions are closed and many families are on the walk in the city, filling bars and restaurants, as well as shops and malls.
Finding a parking place in Oxford is almost impossible with prices rising to the stars as you approach the centre: it’s better to park the car in the suburban zones of the city and then make use of the busses to reach the pedestrian zone (area).
Unlike Cambridge, Oxford, almost immediately gives the impression of being more chaotic, with many more people, with less “quite zones”. However, the charm of an academic city remains, where the students use bikes, where the pubs are attended (frequented) by intellectuals, professors and scientists.
Finding a secluded place to have lunch isn’t always easy, because restaurant and pubs are always crowded: but luckily, asking around and taking the advices of Lonely Planet, you can always find someplace nice and characteristic where you can taste a typical English dish.
A sunny day, surely eases, visiting the city on foot: we’re walking for hours, visiting the main museums and churches, especially the most important colleges, among which Balliol University and Merton Colleges stand out, dating back even to the 13th century and considered amongst the most antique of the city.
The most notable things inside the academic institutes are the silence and the quietness which reign in courtyards and atriums: the sensation is similar when you visit a seminary or a convent.
As you can imagine, in different colleges everything is in place even the garden grass is treated in a maniacal way. You can really adapt yourself to the lifestyle of thousands of students which attend these classrooms, these areas, these gardens: it’s like being on a movie set, for instance, a blink of an eye.
The best way to appreciate the natural and architectural beauty of Oxford is undoubtedly on foot: walk for hours, wandering aimlessly, you will discover the hidden and not very crowded corners of the city.
Luckily we have Stonefly shoes: these shoes, almost too comfortable, allow us to walk for a long time, so easy, fast and without feeling the usual pain in the feet, legs or back. Perfect and recommended to all those who walk a lot, not only on the journey (trip).
But then, is Oxford better than Cambridge? Personally I find Cambridge more a city on a humane scale, less commercial, with a more intimate atmosphere, gathered. Therefore it’s difficult to make a clear distinction between the two locations, being very similar.
What to see: little point in listing the various attractions of the city, leaving this task to other specialized sites or tourist guides, such as Lonely Planet. Definitely do not miss, in addition to various colleges, the Ashmolean Museum, the most antique in Europe and the most prestigious in the city: inside of it, among other collections, you can admire the works of Raphael and Michelangelo.
Sleep: There’s a little bit of everything in Oxford, from hostel dormitories to five star hotels. There is no shortage of mid-level housing, where a double room costs 50€ per night, with private bathroom, tasteful finishes, comfortable beds, central location and breakfast included within the price.
Meals: In spite everything you can find in Oxford, personally I prefer pubs, where you can eat well on a low budget, in a relaxed, informal way, perhaps surrounded by intellectuals and scholars.
Getting there:
Bus
From Victoria Coach Station in London (not far from the train station) there are numerous buses leaving for Oxford and the travel time is approximately one hour and thirty minutes. Ticket price: 10£ one way and 12 to 15£ two ways.
Train
The trains to Oxford depart from Paddington Station in London (round trip from 17£) and are very frequent (one every half an hour).
Car
Follow the signs to the M4 motorway and then those for Oxford. Finding a parking place in Oxford is a nightmare: as mentioned in the article, better to leave the car on the outskirts of the city and then take a bus to the center.

Step 1:

Ricordo come fosse ieri il mio primo viaggio a Venezia: avevo solo sette anni e con tutta la famigli a bordo della mitica Fiat 127, partimmo da Bergamo alla volta di quella che fino a quel momento era stata solo una città conosciuta attraverso il libro di geografia delle elementari.
Una città' costruita sulla laguna e piena di canali, barche, ponti: uno spettacolo difficile da dimenticare sopratutto per un ragazzino alle prime esperienze fuori dal proprio paese. Da quel giorno ho visitato questa incredibile città in una dozzina d'occasioni rimanendo ogni volta affascinato dalla sua bellezza e dall'atmosfera d'altri tempi che si respira attraversandone le piazze e percorrendone i vicoli.
Un viaggio a Venezia rappresenta un'esperienza unica, indimenticabile, sia per coppie alla ricerca di un weekend romantico, che per famiglie e viaggiatori solitari attirati dalle bellezze sia architettoniche che artistiche della città.
Situata sulla laguna che prende lo stesso nome, Venezia è la principale città del Veneto e del nord-est Italia: e' anche la più visitata e la piu' cara d'Italia, davanti a Roma e Firenze.
Ed e' facile capire il perche' di questo successo: Il centro storico è ricco di palazzi signorili che si affacciano sui canali e sulle viuzze che la compongono, antiche residenze delle più ricche famiglie veneziane dell'epoca d'oro della città. Ma non solo: chiese, monumenti e ponti rendono questa città ancor piu' affascinate e unica nel suo genere.
Qualsiasi periodo dell'anno e' buono per una visita alla laguna: quello natalizio e' caratterizzato dai mercatini di Natale, mentre febbraio e' il mese del carnevale più famoso al mondo. In estate, con giornate lunghe e calde, si possono spendere ore vagando per i vicoli della città, e non solo a piedi: un giro in gondola e' d'obbligo e non deluderà le aspettative.
Insomma, in ogni stagione si può trovare una buona scusa per visitare Venezia, tenendo sempre d'occhio il meteo: l'acqua alta e' un grosso problema, per cui arrivate preparati.
Ma non solo Venezia: per una gita fuori porta c'e' Murano famosa in tutto il mondo per i suoi cristalli e per la sua Basilica.
Dimenticate ingorghi, clacson, smog, traffico e parcheggi: a Venezia, è bene ribadirlo, non ci sono automobili ma solo barche. La sua struttura urbana, infatti, rimasta praticamente invariata da più di mille anni, non consente l'utilizzo di veicoli. Nonostante i progetti del XIX secolo, fortunatamente rimasti solo sulla carta, che prevedevano anche per Venezia drastici cambiamenti viari in nome della viabilità su ruote, gli unici mezzi per spostarsi in città restano i piedi e ovviamente i mezzi che si spostano sull'acqua.

Si trova davvero di tutto: dagli hotels super lusso, a piccoli B&B e qualche ostello. I prezzi possono salire alle stelle nei periodi di alta stagione, per questo una buona alternativa sono gli appartamenti in affitto a Venezia (anche solo per pochi giorni o per il fine settimana): in questo modo si ha la possibilità di avere una cucina, ottima per preparare la colazione e perché no, una cena soprattutto se si alloggia in uno degli appartamenti per vacanze a Piazza San Marco
Pasti: non mancano ristoranti, pizzerie, trattorie per tutti i gusti e le tasche. Un pasto medio in una zona centrale (ma non esclusiva) parte dalle €20 a testa.
Come arrivarci:
In aereo
Venezia è servita da due diversi aeroporti: il più vicino è l'Aeroporto Internazionale Marco Polo, a 12 km, o 10 km via acqua dalla città; nei pressi di Treviso, più distante (28,9 km), è l'Aeroporto Internazionale Canova, nel quale fanno scalo alcune compagnie low-cost tra le quali RyanAir. Entrambi gli aeroporti sono serviti da servizi pubblici e privati di collegamento con la città lagunare.
In treno
I collegamenti ferroviari sono limitati alle due stazioni passeggeri: Venezia - Mestre, sulla terraferma, e Venezia - Santa Lucia, situata nel sestiere di Cannaregio, di fronte al Canal Grande.
In auto
Venezia è raggiungibile attraverso il Ponte della Libertà, che collega la città alla moderna area urbana di Mestre, sulla terraferma.
Esistono diversi parcheggi cittadini: dopo il ponte, girando a destra, si trova il principale, situato nella Nuova Isola del Tronchetto; svoltando invece a sinistra, si giunge a piazzale Roma, dove se ne trovano altri, tra cui l'Autorimessa Comunale e il Garage San Marco. Dal primo, al Tronchetto, è possibile raggiungere il centro storico con il battello 82, oppure con l'autobus 6/ che collega l'isola del Tronchetto a piazzale Roma.

Translation - English Venice: an all year round destination?
I remember like it was yesterday my first trip to Venice: I was only seven years old, and with the whole family on board our legendary Fiat 127, we left Bergamo, for what until this day had only been a city I’d known through my school geography book.
A city built on a lagoon, full of canals, boats and bridges: a spectacle not easily forgotten, for a kid’s first experience outside his hometown. From that day onwards I visited this amazing city a dozen times and still remain fascinated every time by its beauty, and by the atmosphere of its piazzas and narrow streets.
A trip to Venice is unique, unforgettable, both for couples seeking a romantic weekend, and for solitary travelers and families attracted by the beauty of the architecture and the artistic vibe the city has to offer.
Situated on the lagoon that has the same name, Venice is the main city of the Veneto region and of the northeastern region of Italy, and also the most visited and unfortunately the most expensive in Italy, even ahead of city like Rome and Florence.
It’s easy to understand why it draws people from all around the world: the old town is full of palaces that sit on the canals and form the narrow streets, antique residences of the richest Venetian families from the golden age as well as the many churches, monuments and bridges which make the city even more charming and unique.
Any time of the year is good to visit this floating city: Christmas markets characterise the winter time, while February is the month of the most famous carnival in the world. In the summer, with its long, hot days, you can spend hours wandering through the narrow streets of the city, and not only on foot: a ride on one of the many gondolas is a must, and won’t disappoint even people with high expectations.
A good excuse can be found to visit Venice in any season of the year, but always keep an eye on the weather conditions: high tide is a big problem, and bitter wind can sometimes blow in from the Adriatic coast, so come prepared.
Also consider a side trip to the city of Murano, famous worldwide for its crystals and its Basilica; it’s just a short boat ride from the Canals of Venice.
Forget traffic jams, horns, smog, traffic and parking: in Venice, it’s worth repeating it, there are no cars but only boats. Its urban structure, which has remained practically unchanged for over thousand years, does not allow the use of vehicles: there were projects, planned in the nineteenth century, to build a road network, which fortunately were never implemented and remained only on paper. So walking on foot and via boat on one the many canals is the only means of transport available – I think you’ll agree that for a tourist point of view, these modes of transport are perfect and add to the experience.

Accommodations:
You can find everything: from super deluxe hotels, to small B & B’s and some hostels. The prices can skyrocket in the peak season, so a good alternative could be an apartment for rent in Venice (even for a few days or for the weekend): this way you get a chance to have a kitchen, excellent for preparing breakfast and why not, a supper (dinner), especially if you are staying in an apartment for holidays in Saint Mark's Square.
Meals:
there are as many restaurants, pizzerias, taverns, for all tastes and pockets. An average meal in a central zone of the city (but not exclusive), starts from 20 € per person.
How to get there:
By plane
Venice is served by two different airports: the closest is the Marco Polo International Airport, 12 km by car or 10 km by water from the city; the International Airport Canova, the furthest, near Treviso (28.9 miles), in which land some low-cost airlines, including Ryanair. Both airports are served by public and private connection with the lagoon city.
By train
Rail connections are limited to two passenger stations: Venice - Mestre on the mainland, and Venice - Saint Lucy, located in the Cannaregio district, in front of the Grand Canal.
By car
Venice can be reached via the Liberty Bridge, which connects the city to the modern urban area of Mestre, on the mainland.
There are several urban parking lots: after the bridge, turning right, there is the largest, located in New Tronchetto Island, turning instead to the left, you arrive to Roma Square, where you can find others, including the Municipal Garage and the Garage St. Mark. From the first to Tronchetto, you can reach the city center by boat 82, or by bus 6 / which connects New Tronchetto Island to Roma Square.
By bus

Is possible to reach Venice with city buses from almost every point of Mestre, where you can find cheaper parking solutions. The bus ticket costs 1 € if bought in a tobacco shop, or 1.5 € if bought on the bus.
