Spanish to English: Cuenca del Guadalquivir General field: Science Detailed field: Environment & Ecology
Translation - English The Guadalquivir watershed lies within a valley that is open to prevailing southwesterly winds and is flanked on the north by the Marianic range or the Sierra Morena, and on the south by the Betic System complex. The Betic mountains are steep and include the highest peaks of the basin (Mulhacén and Veleta), while the Sierra Morena is lower in elevation. The great Betic Valley, with its gentle topography, rises from sea level to approximately 400 m in elevation.
The rivers on the right flank of the watershed are of a marked torrential nature and tend to dry out in the summer, as they run through a landscape with little capacity for retention in a strictly pluvial system. Those on the left flank, however, which are fed by contributions from the permeable soils through which they flow, do not suffer from such severe droughts.
Hydrogeologically, the Plateau is characterized by the existence of isolated detritic, and to a lesser extent, calcareous aquifers. They are generally of limited extent and low permeability, and are, therefore, of interest only at a local level. In the Betic Range, there are a great number of aquifers with very disparate characteristics derived from the lithologic and structural complexity of this unit. For the most part, they are important aquifers composed of calcareous materials and/or dolomites, with a greater or lesser degree of karstification, whose impermeable substrate tends to be composed of Triassic materials (gypsiferous marls and clays) with intercalations of carniola and dolomites. In the Guadalquivir Trough, and in the internal troughs of the Betic Range, as well as in those of Guadix-Baza, Granada and Ronda, the most important aquifers are composed of detritic materials.
German to English: Chemie der Grubenwässer General field: Science Detailed field: Mining & Minerals / Gems
Translation - English Chemistry of Mine Drainage
Contamination due to mine drainage plays a much greater role in the massive hydrogeological and hydrochemical changes associated with than do the mining activities per se (Degner, 2003). As described in the previous sections, the weathering of minerals is primarily responsible for the chemical composition of the waters, which may vary greatly, as a function of the geological conditions, type and size of the deposit and the geochemical environment. The most commonly occurring weathering processes include the oxidation of sulphides and the dissolution of silicates and carbonates. The reaction products are carried into the mine water through leachate, and the mine drainage can be acidic, alkaline or neutral. Acid mine drainage (AMD) is characterized by low pH and net acidity (acidity > alkalinity) (Younger et. al. 2002). The components necessary for the formation of acid mine drainage are sulfide minerals, water or a humid environment, and an oxidant (usually oxygen). The ongoing processes and chemical reactions are strongly interrelated (Helms, 1995).
Italian to English: Prospezione Geoelettrica General field: Science Detailed field: Geology
Source text - Italian Inquadramento idrogeologico.
a) un ricoprimento resistente, con resistività quasi sempre compresa fra 400 e 2000 ohm.m, corrispondente, in linea di massima, alle formazioni vulcaniche;
Translation - English Hydrogeologic Framework
A detailed geophysical survey was carried out in the northern part of the Bolsena volcanic system which is composed of very irregular alternating strata of tuffs, pozzolans, scoria, lapilli, and lava (predominantly basalt. These volcanic materials are found in the east, northeast, and to a limited extent, in the north of the Pliocene and Quaternary formations which consist of clays, sandy clays and sandy conglomerates. The volcanic materials in the northwest overlie very heterogeneous formations in flysch facies, which consist of chaotic clays, marls, calcarenites, sandstones, and Tertiary green rocks on the slip face of the underlying clays or clayey tuffs at the base of the volcano. In the study area within the Bolsena volcanic system, these facies flow toward the lake as well as to the north and west as evidenced by the groundwater divide identified in the previous hydrogeologic study. Geologic logs from boreholes to the south of Acquapendente revealed tuffs and pyroclastics of up to 25-70 m in depth, primarily in the top layer, and toward the base of the volcanic series; the area between these two zones is made up primarily of lavas which constitute, on average, 70% of the volcanic soils penetrated by the boreholes. The regional trend of the piezometric surface shows a general convergence of flow lines to the South toward the depression of Lake Bolsena. However, there is a significant flattening of the water table in the area that includes Acquapendente, S. Lorenzo Nuobo, and Onano. A groundwater divide has been identified in this area, and the flow lines also trend north (Acquapendente) and west (Onano). It follows, then, that the water table gradient is only partially controlled by the morphology of the impermeable substrate.
Geophysical Survey
The geophysical survey carried out using electrical resistivity soundings has shown that the resistivity of the volcanic layer is substantially higher than that of the underlying soils, and the resistivity diagrams show the superposition of two electrically differentiated media:
a) a resistant top layer, with resistivity values almost always between 400 and 2000 ohm-m, corresponding, in principle, to the volcanic formations;
b) a conductive substrate identified with the sedimentary basement.
In the top layer, zones of higher resistivity would indicate the strong development of compact lava or tuff which is predominantly dry or has a relatively deep water table. In order to optimize the utilization of the information obtained from geophysical surveys, the results of the previous hydrogeologic study and the drilling program were also taken into consideration. The resistivity diagrams were designed to clarify the geolithological situation as well as the hydrogeology and hydrodynamics of the aquifer in the volcanic material.
English to Spanish: Crustal Deformation Studies Using SAR Interferometry General field: Science Detailed field: Geology
Source text - English Crustal deformation induced by the motion of tectonic plates produces a wide variety of landforms at the surface of the Earth, and their size depends on the duration of the process involved in their formation. The deformation associated with an earthquake takes place over periods of a few seconds (co-seismic) to several days and months (post-seismic), and produces fault scarps and surface displacement ranging from a few centimeters to several meters in magnitude. Over longer periods of time (10 Kyr - 1 Myr), the cumulative effect of earthquakes displaces Quaternary surfaces and geomorphic features by tens to hundreds of meters, producing landforms of greater spatial wavelengths. Over millions of years, such processes build mountain ranges.
To study seismically active fault systems, it is important to measure both the long-term rate of deformation averaged over several seismic cycles and the short-term deformation associated with the seismic activity along individual faults. The first type of measurement requires accurate topographic maps to quantify the cumulative displacement of Quaternary surfaces and geomorphic structures such as alluvial fans or glacial moraines. The second type of measurements requires the capacity of estimating subtle displacements of the ground at the millimeter level of precision over short time intervals. With the advent of spaceborne radar systems (ERS-1/2, JERS-1, SIR-C, RADARSAT), the technique of SAR interferometry is becoming a new tool for active tectonics by providing both mm-precision surface change maps spanning periods of days to years and m-precision, high resolution topographic maps for measuring crustal strain accumulated over longer periods of time.
English to Spanish: Mutual Interference of Cones of Influence General field: Science Detailed field: Environment & Ecology
Source text - English Occasionally, two or more wells have developed their cones of influence in such a way that they interfere with one another. This situation requires that the wells be relatively close and developed in the same aquifer. There is always a chance this will occur in any intensive development of the same groundwater reservoir. Simply stated, the cone of influence of one well overlaps the cone of a neighboring well. A part of the cone of influence that fed one well must now satisfy another well also. The amount and areal extent of the interference is directly related to the rate of pumping of each well. Other factors of no less importance are the spacing between the wells and the hydrologic characteristics of the groundwater reservoir furnishing the water to the two wells.
If more wells are developed in the same area, the chance for interference increases. The cones of influence of the initial wells expand and deepen in order to satisfy their pumps with each development of another well and its subsequent cone of influence. The cones must always establish a hydraulic gradient just sufficient to supply the amount of water required by the pumped well. If this water is not available in the area of the initial cone because some groundwater is diverted into another cone, the initial cone simply enlarges to an outlying area where sufficient replenishment can be derived.
The development of deep-well turbine pumps enables water to be pumped from great depths and from geologic strata of low head. The characteristics of this type of pump enable it to operate at peak capacity until the water level declines to one or two meters below the pump bowls. The pumping capacity will decline sharply at this point and thereafter until the pump breaks suction. The importance of this point is that it is possible for the well yield to be sustained for a long period of time even though the rate of water level decline is constantly increasing because of mutual well interference. There is no warning that the well is close to failing. It might be advantageous to periodically check the water level to avoid the consequences of a declining pumping level.
