English to Bengali: The Booming Herbal Product Industry
Source text - English On August 31, 2005, the Ministry of Public Health predicted record-setting herbal
product revenues for 2005, estimating revenues of 50 billion bahts. The Thai herbal
industry is also seeing an increase of 20-30% in domestic sales. According to Minister
of Public Health Suchai Charoenratanakul, who spoke at the opening ceremony of the
Second National Herb Festival, held from August 31 to September 4, the herbal
products with the most robust sales are herbal cosmetics, followed by supplement
products and herbal drinks. Herbal cosmetic sales stand at 11.19 billion bahts, with
supplement sales at 9.6 billion and herbal drinks at 9.37 billion bahts. The herbal
product sector as a whole records 48 billion bahts in domestic sales and 1.56 billion
bahts in exports. Sales are also brisk for related products, including powdered spices
and other ingredients used in Thai and Asian cooking, and spa products such as
traditional massage goods. The Minister also noted that, with exports forecast to grow
by 10% a year through 2009, the government must spotlight the 12 herbs and herbal
products expected to record the most significant growth as it works to improve product
quality and increase production volume if this goal is to be achieved.
With regard to domestic demand, hospitals across the country are encouraged to support
the manufacture of herbal medicines and supplies of traditional medicines by
prescribing these as alternatives to modern medicines. The Ministry of Public Health
will promote at least 50 different medicinal products, two of which are included in the
Thai Pharmacopoeia, as part of its industry development plan. Andrographis paniculata
(Burm. F.) Nees and Gynostemma pentaphyllum Makino were selected as this year’s
Herbs of the Year. The former herb has traditionally been used as a cold medicine, and
the latter is reportedly effective in boosting resistance to HIV. These herbs will be the
subject of further study.
