English to Indonesian: Rural Areas and the Internet General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
Source text - English Rural Internet use has grown over the past four years, but in some ways, rural areas continue to be a frontier. Though growing, rural Internet penetration has remained roughly 10 percentage points behind the national average in each of the last four years. This gap is probably has to do with the low population density and high cost of service in these locales, as well as the lower levels of income and education that characterize rural areas. Additionally, a large portion of the rural population is 65 or older, and past studies have consistently found that older Americans are among the least likely to go online. But matters of cost and demographics are not the only distinguishing feature of rural areas’ relationship to the Internet. Rural Internet users are distinctive in some ways for what they do and don’t do online. They are more likely than others accessed religious or spiritual content. In addition, they are more likely to have used instant messaging. On the other hand, they are less likely than others to have engaged in transaction activities such as online banking and online purchases. The differences covered in this report indicate that the rural Internet experience isn’t identical to more urbanized ones, nor is it following an identical trajectory.
English to Indonesian: Economic Crisis: The U.S. Political Leadership Has Failed General field: Other Detailed field: Economics
Source text - English As the 2007 economic collapse picks up speed, it’s time to take a hard look at the performance of the U.S. national political leadership in meeting some of their most fundamental responsibilities. It’s time to face the fact of serious failure over the last quarter century.
During this time, the leaders of both political parties and of major institutions such as the Federal Reserve have presided over the abandonment of some of the most solemn obligations of constitutional government. They have done this in order to embrace an agenda favorable mainly to the financial, corporate, and government elites.
On January 20, 1981, a full generation ago, President Ronald Reagan said in his first inaugural address, "Government is not a solution to our problem, government is the problem."
Reagan was both right and wrong.
The problem the U.S. was facing then was the collapse of the nation’s manufacturing base through a recession that happened when the Federal Reserve raised interest rates to over the twenty percent level. It did so almost a decade after President Richard Nixon removed the gold peg for the dollar, leading to the inflation of the 1970s when our currency flooded world markets through the oil trade.
