Source text - Hungarian Újabb szén-dioxid-rekord: közel a kritikus értékhez
A Hawaii-szigeteken, közel 3500 méteres magasságban települt megfigyelőállomás 1957-es alapítása óta követi nyomon a légköri szén-dioxid mennyiségét.
E kiugró értékekre többféle magyarázat is született.
Mások a nagy kiterjedésű erdőtüzeket okolják.
Napjainkban a fosszilis tüzelőanyagok (kőszén, kőolaj, földgáz) elégetése következtében évente 6,3-6,5 milliárd tonna szén kerül szén-dioxid formájában a légkörbe, ami a légkör teljes szén-dioxid-tartalmának 1%-a.

Translation - English A new carbon dioxide record: approaching the critical value
While international cooperation seems to be on its way in order to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases following the Kyoto Protocol entering into force, the quantity of atmospheric carbon dioxide has reached record levels and nearly approached a point of no return, according to some experts.
The carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere is currently the highest in the history of mankind: in the previous month it reached 380 ppmv (parts per million by volume). This means an increase of more than 35% – 100 ppmv – compared to the pre-industrial era. A study compiled by the International Climate Change Taskforce states that the value from where there is no return is 400 ppmv. Considering the present emission rate, this may be reached by 2015.
These figures were published by the Mauna Loa Observatory. The observatory has kept record of the atmospheric carbon dioxide since it was built in 1957 at 3,500 m above sea level in Hawaii. As it is located at high altitude and away from densely populated regions, local sources of pollution have no effect on its measured data. Therefore, the Mauna Loa records are the most accurate in the world and the figures it publishes are widely regarded as a standard for the scientific world as well as a reliable source for everybody.
The observatory has been registering the increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide since the 1960s when the ratio was 315.6 ppmv. Since then it increased by approximately one ppmv every year. However, in the past two years this rate has reached 1.5 – 1.8 ppmv/year. During years with steady increase, there were years with peak values. In the past decade three such years were registered: the atmospheric carbon dioxide value increased by 2.6 ppmv in 1998, and 2.3 ppmv in both 2002 and 2003.
These peak values have been explained in different ways. Some say that these peaks coincided with the climatic anomalies of the El Nino. The oceans, like the soil and the vegetation, absorb a significant amount of carbon dioxide. However, exceptional climatic conditions, like the ones following the El Nino, can affect this process. Yet those supporting the theory admit that the effects of the 2002-2003 El Nino were rather moderate, therefore, it could not be the only reason for the drastic increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide content.
Others blame the large-scale forest fires. There were many of them devastating Indonesia and Malaysia in 1998, and Siberia during previous peaks. These forest fires emit huge amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and several experts say that combined with the El Nino effects they can cause peak values.
The quantity of atmospheric carbon dioxide may produce considerable fluctuation within one year, including seasonal ones as well. Every spring when the vegetation starts to grow a large amount of carbon dioxide is used, therefore, its level decreases for a few months. These drops, however, are always followed by new increases bringing about new atmospheric carbon dioxide records.
The most significant problem is the continuous increase in carbon dioxide levels caused by human-induced activity. By burning fossil fuels (coal, petroleum, natural gas) annually 6.3 – 6.5 thousand million tons of carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide, which accounts for 1% of all the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere. One-third of this is absorbed by and stored in the oceans, and one-sixth in the soil and vegetation. The remaining part which is more than half of the emitted amount remains in the atmosphere and is likely to contribute to the annual increase.
