Source text - Spanish Fui a la cocina, calenté la pavita, y cuando estuve devuelta con la bandeja del mate le dije a Irene.
- Tuve que cerrar la puerta del pasillo. han tomado la parte del fondo.
Dejó caer el tejido y me miró con sus graves ojos cansados.
- ¿Estás seguro?
Asentí.
- Entonces - dijo recogiendo las agujas - tendremos que vivir en este lado.
Yo cebaba el mate con mucho cuidado, pero ella tardó un rato en reanudar su labor. Me acuerdo que tejía un chaleco gris; a mí me gustaba ese chaleco.
Los primeros días nos pareció penoso porque ambos habíamos dejado en la parte tomada muchas cosas que queríamos. Mis libros de literatura francesa, por ejemplo, estaban todos en la biblioteca. Irene extrañaba unas carpetas, un par de pantuflas que tanto la abrigaban en invierno. Yo sentía mi pipa de enebro y creo que Irene pensó en una botella de Hesperidina de muchos años. Translation - English I went to the kitchen, warmed the kettle, and when I returned with the tray for the mate, I said to Irene: "I had to close the hallway door. They've taken the back."
She let the fabric she was knitting fall, and looked at me with her gravely tired eyes, "Are you sure?" I nodded.
"Then," she said as she picked up her needles, "we'll have to live on this side."
I was preparing the mate very carefully, but she took a while to resume her work. I remember she was knitting a grey vest - I liked that vest.
The first days were rather distressing since we'd both left many things we loved in the now taken part of the house. For example, my French literature books were all in the library. Irene missed some folders and a pair of slippers that would keep her feet especially warm in the winter. I lamented my pipe made of juniper, and I think Irene lamented a bottle of Hesperidins she'd had for many years.
Frequently (but this only happened the first few days) we'd close a drawer from a dresser, and with a saddened look say: "It's not here." And it was one more thing to add from all the things we'd already lost to the other side of the house.

Source text - English Moby Dick is the story of the struggle between Captain Ahab and the white whale.
The mere elements of the story at once reveal everything and nothing about the most extraordinary North American literary work of the nineteenth century. What is Moby Dick? It is a great marine adventure, and a great chronicle of the whaling industry. It is a great ode to nature, to labor, and to the dignity of men. It is one man’s prophecy of the impending changes of our time, but also a deep exploration of the spiritual and political texture of the United States. It is a dialectic narration about the demands of brotherhood, innocence and pride, and an epic of democracy and a theology of the diabolical. It is a symbolic tone of the human condition. But categorizing can only limit it: Moby Dick, an enduring and universal work of art, possessing truth within an infinite latticework or interpretation. For us, it has a plethora of meanings that were not, nor will be, identical to those that men past or future have seen, or will see, in the novel. From there stems its radical modernity: it is an open sign. This plethora of meanings coexists within a single source, the novel itself.

English to Spanish: U.S. Trade Deficit Hits All-Time High Detailed field: Economics
Source text - English The U.S. trade deficit soared to an all-time high of $725.8 billion in 2005, pushed upward by record imports of oil, food, cars and other consumer goods. The deficit with China hit an all-time high as did America's deficits with Japan, Europe, OPEC, Canada, Mexico and South and Central America.
The Commerce Department reported Friday that the gap between what America sells abroad and what it imports rose to $725.8 billion last year, up by 17.5 percent from the previous record of $617.6 billion set in 2004.
It marked the fourth consecutive year that America's trade deficit has set a record as American consumers continued their seemingly insatiable demand for all things foreign from new cars to televisions and electronic goods.
The increased foreign competition has helped to keep the lid on prices in this country, but critics say the rising trade deficit is a major factor in the loss of nearly 3 million manufacturing jobs since mid-2000 as U.S. companies moved production overseas to lower-waged nations. Many economists believe those manufacturing jobs will never come back.

El déficit comercial en los Estados Unidos se disparó a una cifra récord de 725.8 mil millones de dólares en el año 2005, empujada por un record de importaciones de petróleo, alimentos, automóviles y otros bienes de consumo. El déficit con China alcanzo una cifra record así como Japón, Europa, OPEP (Organización de los países exportados de petróleo), Canadá, México, América Central y del Sur.
El departamento de comercio presentó un informe el viernes que el desequilibrio de la balanza comercial entre lo que América vende en el exterior y lo que importa, subió hasta 725,8 mil millones el año pasado un 17,5 por ciento sobre el récord anterior de 617,6 mil millones alcanzado en el año 2004.
Supuso el cuarto año consecutivo (seguido) que el déficit comercial de América ha establecido un record mientras los consumidores americanos continuaron, al parecer, su aparentemente insaciable demanda por todos los artículos extranjeros, desde las teles hasta aparatos de electrónica.
El aumento de competencia internacional contribuye a contener los precios en este país, aunque los críticos dicen que el déficit creciente comercial es un factor principal en la perdida de más de 3 millones de empleos industriales desde mediados 2000 a medida que las empresas norteamericanas han trasladado la producción al extranjero a los países extranjeros con salarios inferiores. Bio
I currently reside in Jamaica Plain, MA, where I teach Spanish part-time at a high school. Since I am no longer working full time I have found more availability to return to translating, a practice and hobby that I have always enjoyed in my studies at graduate school and beyond.
I recently moved from Madrid, Spain where I received a Masters Degree in Spanish Language and Literature with Middlebury College in 2006. Upon completion of my Masters Degree, I resided in Spain for 3 years where I taught English and worked for the Ministry of the Environment, translating exams to give to civil servants.
I am also a native of New York City, where I have spent most of my time in earlier years, as I attended NYU for a Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish and Education. I also love to travel and have spent considerable time in Costa Rica. Some of my interests include music, dance, art, literature, and the culinary world. In my free time I enjoy attending concerts, exploring restaurants in the city, learning Portuguese, running and taking ballet classes
Now as I continue my own personal and professional growth, I am interested in working more extensively in the translation world. I am excited for the opportunities that are to come! Cheers!
