A Short Prequel to the Innkeeper Series
Gerard Demille and Helen Meet
Gerard Demille closed his eyes and rocked back and forth on the soles of his feet, swaying gently. He could feel the invisible walls of the pentagram around him, the magic solid and thick, streaming upward and downward. An impenetrable barrier. He could feel it, he could touch it – it would hurt like hell, but he couldn’t feel his own feet. Life was not fair.
He took a deep breath and blew it out. He couldn’t feel that either. He just went through the motions, following a muscle memory.
Bored. Bored, bored, bored. So mercilessly bored.
Around him the basement lay steeped in gloom, the thick stone walls patterned with a lattice of light and shadow, filtering through the wooden grates guarding the basement windows. A mouse scurried in the corner and paused to wash her nose with tiny hand-paws.
“You stop that,” Gerard told her. That’s all he needed. Mice gnawing on the walls.
The mouse looked at him with beady eyes.
“Shoo. Leave. You’re not welcome in my house.”
The little beast appeared unimpressed.
Gerard heaved another sigh and concentrated. A small chunk of rock in the corner shivered and shot across the floor in front of the rodent. The mouse jumped and dashed away. Gerard chased her with the rock all the way to the wall where a strand of ivy had made its way down into the basement through the broken window. The mouse jumped, trying to get to the ivy, but the vine ended too high up. Gerard dropped the rock. His magic reached out like an invisible hand and gently closed about the mouse. The animal squeaked, flailing. Gerard held it tighter – mice could squirm through the smallest openings and this wasn’t his first time at the rodeo – levitated the mouse up to the window, where a corner of the glass pane had broken out, and gently pushed her through the hole. The mouse darted out, no doubt feeling for its life. He concentrated, flattening the magic into a narrow plane and sliced at the vine, severing it neatly at the window.
Well, that was fun.

Gerard Demilles und Helens erste Begegnung
Gerard Demille schloss seine Augen und wippte auf seinen Fußsohlen hin und her, sachte schaukelnd. Er konnte die unsichtbaren Mauern des Pentagramms um ihn herum fühlen, wie die Magie stark und solide auf und ab strömte. Eine undurchdringliche Barriere. Er konnte sie fühlen, er konnte sie berühren – es würde brennen wie Feuer, doch seine eigenen Füße spürte er kaum noch.
Das Leben war einfach ungerecht.
Er nahm einen tiefen Atemzug und blies die Luft wieder hinaus. Nicht einmal das fühlte er. Nur eine Bewegung, eine Erinnerung seiner Muskeln.
Langweilig. Langweilig. Langweilig. So gnadenlos langweilig.
Um ihn herum lag die untere Etage von Düsternis durchtränkt, die dicken Steinmauern bedeckt mit einem Muster aus Schatten und Licht, welches gefiltert durch die hölzernen Fenstergitter hineinfiel. Eine Maus trippelte in eine der Ecken, um dort mit ihren winzigen handähnlichen Pfoten über ihre Nase zu streichen.
„Hör sofort auf damit“, sagte Gerard zu ihr. Das hatte ihm noch gefehlt. Mäuse die an den Wänden nagten.
Die Maus blinzelte ihn mit ihren Knopfaugen an.
„Husch. Hau ab. Du bist hier nicht erwünscht.“
Das kleine Biest sah nicht besonders beeindruck aus.
Gerard seufzte auf und konzentrierte sich. Ein kleines Steinchen in der Ecke erzitterte und schoss quer über den Boden am Nager vorbei. Die Maus erschrak und flitzte davon. Gerard jagte sie mit dem Bröckchen bis zur gegenüberliegenden Wand, an der eine schmale Efeuranke durch das zerbrochene Fenster ihren Weg ins Untergeschoss gefunden hatte. Die Maus sprang, versuchte die Ranke zu erreichen, doch diese endete ein gutes Stück über ihr. Gerard ließ den Stein los. Seine Magie streckte sich wie die Finger einer unsichtbaren Hand und schlossen sich sanft um die Maus. Das Tier quiekte und zappelte wild. Gerard hielt sie fester - Mäuse kommen durch die winzigsten Ritzen und dies war nicht sein erstes Mal – ließ die Maus auf Höhe des Fensters schweben, bei dem eine Ecke des Glases herausgebrochen war und schob sie sanft durch die Öffnung. Die Maus schoss hinaus, ohne Zweifel um ihr Leben fürchtend. Er konzentrierte sich formte seine Magie zu einer flachen Klinge und durchtrennte den Trieb feinsäuberlich an der Fensterkante.
Nun, das hatte doch Spaß gemacht.

In brief, attachment is a child`s biological tie or bond to her biological caregivers, usually her parents. It is a biological system developed through evolution to protect the child, thus ensuring the likelihood she will grow into an adult to reproduce, thereby guaranteeing gene survival.
The child`s attachment to her parent is though to develop over the first year of life. The degree of a child`s attachment to her parent is shaped by the quality of sensitivity, attunement, and responsivity of the parent. Terms like attachment or attachment bond or attechment tie refer to the child`s connection to her parents. The term bonding, however, is commonly used to the parent`s connection to the child.

Translation - German Was also ist Verbundenheit?
In Kurzform, ist Verbundenheit das biologische Band oder die Verbindung des Kindes mit seinen biologischen Bezugspersonen, gewöhnlich die Eltern. Es ist ein evolutionär entwickeltes System der Natur, um das Kind zu schützen und damit die Warscheinlichkeit zu erhöhen, dass das Kind erwachsen wird und sich reproduziert, und damit die Weitergabe der Gene sichert.
Die kindliche Verbundenheit zu den Eltern entwickelt sich während des ersten Lebensjahres. Der Grad derselben wird geprägt durch die Qualität des Feingefühls, der emotionalen Einstimmung und des Ansprechverhaltens der Eltern. Begriffe wie Verbundenheit oder Band beschreiben dabei die Seite des Kindes. Der Begriff Bindung wiederum, wird gewöhnlich verwendet, wenn von der elterlichen Verbindung zum Kind gesprochen wird.
