Have you ever thought about which religious holiday is your favorite? Which day seems the most colorful and cheerful of them all? When adults go to the church and most of the time with you?
Maybe it's Palm Sunday?
On the images representing Palms Sunday, we can see children climbing on the branched trees. But, on some frescos children are put in front of the crowd by their parents, in order for them to see the Lord better, that’s why they are the first ones who greet him on his way in.
This is the reason why Palms Sunday, as we call it unofficially, and ecclesiastically called “Triumphal Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem”, is mostly a children’s holiday.
However, the week that ended with the festive and joyful entry of the Lord into Jerusalem started quite differently:
Jesus was on the banks of the Jordan with his disciples when he heard that his friend Lazarus had become ill.
The message came from Bethany from Lazarus’s sisters - Mary and Martha, so Jesus decided to visit his friend. But when he arrived Lazarus had already passed away.
The only thing Martha said to Jesus was: “My Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died”, to what Jesus answered: “He isn’t dead, he’s just sleeping.”
Jesus went to Lazarus’s tomb with the crowd following him and ordered them to remove the tombstone from Lazarus’s grave.
After, he called out his beloved friend as if he was alive: “Lazarus, come out!”
And truly Lazarus, covered in canvas, came out of the cave.
This event is particularly celebrated as one of the greatest miracles of Jesus.
In church daily readings this story is told in the following way:
“The time will come and people will rise from the dead for future life. Jesus our Lord, you raised your friend Lazarus from the dead to teach us this.”
This story showed us that death doesn’t exist and passing away is only the beginning of a new life.
This exact miracle was the one that was followed by The Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem.
Christ asked his disciples for a donkey himself, he even told them where to find it. Then he sat on the donkey and entered Jerusalem this way. We have already mentioned that the children were happily running towards him. Many of them, ones who could not jump ahead in the crowd and overtake the elders, climbed the trees; Their pure, cheerful, little hearts could feel who was entering their city. They cried out with joy, "Glory to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"
Probably you ask why did our Lord and Savior seat on the donkey. For most, in order to feel the love of God more, we must learn to be more humble.
We have already mentioned that the children were happily running towards him. Many of them, ones who could not jump ahead in the crowd and overtake the elders, climbed the trees; Their pure, cheerful, little hearts could feel who was entering their city. They cried out with joy, "Glory to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"
It would be good to convey the content of the readings that are read in the church on the day of Palm Sunday so that when we stand in the temple during the service we can better understand everything we hear in the church: “He who stands on the earth and at the same time is enthroned in heaven, he who is God, he who is Christ, Humbly sits on the donkey, coming from Bethany, and the smallest, newborn children, holding the branches in their hands, greet him with joy, and chant: "Glory to heaven above, blessed is he who comes to us, he is the King of Israel!"
The children cried out this amazing prayer. Nowhere is it written who taught them this prayer, how they learned how to praise the Lord. However, we hear from ecclesiastical readings that infants, some of whom were still breastfed, said this prayer, thus proving that Jesus approaching them was indeed the Christ whom the world has long been waiting for. It is also written in the readings that the children would sing with the angels. Prayer is this easy and simple! Especially for children... Prayer is possible at any time since these children shouted the words of prayer while climbing the trees. Therefore you can always praise God like these children; You can, simply, ask for help in your own words and thank him as well.
However, on this day, the Savior's face was grieved during all of this joy and excitement.
Although people greet the Savior with loud joy, he himself knows that this day will be followed by the crucifixion and passion.
Therefore, while we ought to rejoice, the excitement should not make us forget what followed Palm Sunday.
The Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem was followed by the betrayal of the Savior
Who betrayed him?
One of those who accompanied him upon entering Jerusalem as his closest disciple!
The betrayal was followed by a trial and a conviction!
And who convicted him?
The ones who laying branches at his feet and are glorifying his arrival with joy and hope.
And what followed the conviction?
The conviction was followed by crucifixion... And who crucified? Those who have waited so long for his arrival, those who have made sacrifices to God in order for the Messiah to appear as soon as possible. These were the Jewish priests.
That is why the feast of Palm Sunday is sorrowful!
However, eventually, all of this was followed by resurrection!
And the resurrection of Christ (now called Easter feast) is such a glorious event that it's better to dedicate a separate book to it.
