I was born in a family where language was always everyone's hobby, whether implicitly or explicitly. We would go on holiday to a country two year in a row and my dad would learn the laguage, eventually learning languages like Polish, Chinese and Welsh. My sister is a succesfult teacher, translator and interpreter. Besides the languages of words, the language of music speaks in our family, and between us I don't think there is an instrument we do not play.
My languages extend more into the world of ideas and abstract concepts. When I encounter a new language I am fascinated by how it expresses concepts other languages do not. Examples include the many ways German compound words express very specific feelings, how Dutch is very explicit in a way that makes it ideal for contracts, or how Polish manages to put a lot of meaning into few words through use of cases.
I love playing with translations in a way that correctly transcribes every grammatical 'mistake' the speaker is making, as they express themselves in speaking terms, rather than grammatically correct written terms.
