English to Turkish: Paper 2 Practice (A College Level English Literature Analysis) General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English Show some of the ways in which the writers of at least two of the works you have studied enable the reader/audience to discern a meaning that is only implied.
Literature is often used to emphasize a theme or an aim. Generally, these themes are usually hidden between the lines of the literary works and are expected to be found by the reader. Likewise, Oedipus the King by Sophocles and 1984 by George Orwell reveal the true meaning of power in its own perspective. While Oedipus the King was first performed around 429 BC, 1984 was written in 1949. Because of this era difference, the understanding of power has changed its depiction. Authors use language differently to challenge the readers to realize the true meaning of power.
Sophocles created Oedipus the King as a poetic play, challenging the meaning of power with several literary devices. The main character Oedipus is the king of Thebes. He became the rightful owner of the crown by solving Sphinx’s riddle, meaning that the kingship came from power rather than blood. The background of the play is used in way that starts itself with the emphasis of Oedipus’ power. Later in the play, he destroys himself because he goes against the Greek Gods, the only owners of ultimate power in that era, and tries to break the prophecies.
Translation - Turkish Yazarların okuyucunun ima edilen anlamı fark etmesini nasıl sağladığını okuduğunuz çalışmaların en az ikisiyle gösteriniz.
Edebiyat çoğunlukla bir temayı ya da amacı aktarmak için kullanılır. Genelde, bu temalar yapıtların satır aralarında saklanır ve okuyucu tarafından bulunmaları beklenir. Benzer şekilde, Sofokles'in Kral Oedipus ve George Orwell'in 1984 adlı yapıtları gücün gerçek anlamını kendi bakış açılarıyla ortaya çıkarmıştır. Kral Oedipus adlı oyun İ.Ö. 429'da ilk defa sergilenirken, 1984 1949'da yazılmıştır. Bu dönem farklılığı sebebiyetiyle, gücün anlamı zaman içinde değişmiştir. Yazarlar dili farklı biçimlerde kullanarak, okuyucuyu gücün gerçek anlamını fark etmeye iter.
Sofokles Kral Oedipus'ı şiirsel bir oyun olarak yazmasının etkisiyle gücün gerçek anlamını birden fazla edebi sanat kullanarak sorgulamıştır. Ana karakter olan Oedipus, Thebai şehrinin kralıdır. Oedipus, Sfenks'in bilmecesini çözerek tahdın sahibi haline gelmiştir.
