Pakistan’s Valid Point of View in Nuclear Security Summit
The American President Barack Obama, in his address to the nuclear summit, has reiterated his conviction to stand by Pakistan to fight the menace of terrorism. He said that the access of terrorists to the nuclear arsenals over the globe had been made impossible. And that the vulnerability of the nuclear assets had been overcome except a few risks. And that the agreement of nuclear material’s security had been endorsed by 102 countries of the world.
The American President has rejected the rumours regarding Pakistani Prime Minister’s absence in the summit. The White House, on commencement of the fourth and final conference, informed that President Obama had talked to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on the phone when latter cancelled his visit to the summit and former expressed that he understood that Lahore bombings were the reason of latter’s decision to cancel the visit. As a result of this telephonic contact there were speculations that President Obama wanted Nawaz Sharif to attend the summit. Anyhow White House’s statement not only clarifies the doubts but also the purpose of calling.
Obama has reiterated his conviction to help Pakistan fight terrorism. Despite the absence of Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan was the center of discussions of media about the conference. Pakistan’s point of view is very clear in this regard. Mr. Tariq Fatimi, the Special Assistant to Prime Minister, who represented Pakistan said, “Pakistan has kept the nuclear program secure over the period of forty years. She is very serious regarding her nuclear responsibilities and delivering them in the best manner. She has consistently cooperated with IAEA. Our nuclear security is extremely effective. It is global concern that the atomic materials should never be accessed by wrong hands and we are equally concerned with this. Pakistan’s nuclear materials are in safe hands. The security environment is fool proof and the institutions meant for safeguarding nuclear materials are of international standards. There has been made not even a single minor mistake or technical accident in forty years while such and big things have happened in many countries. Russia, India and Japan are examples of such accidents. The nuclear materials were not secure after the debacle of USSR because the country has been divided into fourteen states and was no more united. Her assets were placed where they were before the debacle and the world continued to express its concerns and reservations over this for a long time. There have passed news about the stealing of Indian nuclear materials five times and there were incidents of leaking of the atomic radiations. The nuclear plant in Japan had to be shut down after the Tsunami in Japan because there were casualties because of this.”
Tariq Fatimi has truly said that Pakistan has been safeguarding her assets for forty years and the circumstances verify and support his claim. Pakistan has developed and nurtured her nuclear program with her own resources. The great Pakistani scientists have successfully camouflaged their lofty works from the anguish of the world. Pakistan faced many allegations during this course of time but she did not divert her focus. India started to look down upon Pakistan and used low languages for her after her nuclear explosions in May 1998. Then Pakistan decided to respond with nuclear tests to silence the enemy.
Pakistan has passed through a long duration of test because her solidarity was vulnerable. Such developments had become inevitable after the Indian aggression of 1971. That was the time when Dr. Abdul Qadir Khan offered his services to Mr. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. After two and a half years of Bhutto regime the responsibility shifted to Mr. General Zia-ul-Haq. The project was completed in ten years of his period but was kept secret from the world. And at a moment in the history when India was ready to do an adventure with Pakistan in the disguise of military exercises, General Zia “leaked” this secret to them to curb their evil intentions. Then the blasts were made in the time of Mr. Nawaz Sharif. After him Ms. Benazir Bhutto developed the missile technology in which Pakistan has shown a great advancement.
Pakistan has completed her arrangements and she is a responsible atomic state. She is protecting her assets on international standards. IAEA is fully satisfied with our deliverance. American institutions have also expressed their confidence on these arrangements many times. Some circles which have certain secret intentions about Pakistan criticize sometimes which is totally illogical.
Pakistan has faced terrorism on a large scale while a few such incidents have shaken the resolve of other countries badly. France and Belgium are examples of this. The level of terrorism that Pakistan has faced would have scattered other societies like straws if they would have faced a fraction of Pakistan’s losses. The world needs to understand the courage of Pakistan and on the eve of nuclear summit Mr. Tariq Fatimi has explained it before them in the perfect perspective.
