Jesus loved to socialize with the tax collectors and sinners. He was eager to tell them about God’s great love. Sometimes they also dined together. This annoyed the religious leaders. Didn’t Jesus know how many wrong things these people did? How could he spend so much time with such bad people? (Wait a moment.) Jesus wanted to explain to the religious leaders how much God loves each person, yes, even the sinners. Therefore, he told the people a story, a parable.
Jesus said, “There was a man who had two sons. The youngest son was a bit of a rebel and one day he came to his father with an important request. ‘Father, I am tired of helping at home all day long. I really want to see the world! Give me my share of the estate, the money that I’ll receive after your death. I want to use it now.”
“The father was not happy about this request. However, he did what the son asked. In his heart he must surely have been concerned about this impulsive request. What would become of him?”
The son gathered all his money and possessions and with a big smile he started on his journey. He couldn’t wait for the big adventure! He went to a far land and used his money to make many new friends. Without thinking about saving or worrying about later, he spent money on parties and other enjoyable things. Someone who spends money so easily was naturally very popular and soon he had many friends who joined his parties.”
“Then, one day, he had no money left. It was a big mess! He had no job where he could earn more money. His so-called friends took off when they realized that he could not have such jolly times as before. All of a sudden he was completely alone.”
