English to Portuguese: The Passenger from Calais, Chapter I General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English The crossing from Dover to Calais had been rough; a drizzling rain fell all the time, and most of the passengers had remained below. Strange to say, they were few enough, as I saw on landing. It was a Sunday in late July, and there ought to have been a strong stream setting towards Central Europe. I hardly expected to find much room in the train; not that it mattered, for my place was booked through in the Lucerne sleeping-car of the Engadine express.
Room! When I reached the siding where this train de luxe was drawn up, I saw that I was not merely the first but the only passenger. Five sleeping-cars and a dining-car attached, with the full staff, attendants, chef, waiters—all lay there waiting for me, and me alone.
English to Portuguese: Chronic venous insufficiency General field: Medical Detailed field: Medical (general)
Source text - English Chronic venous insufficiency or CVI is a medical condition where the veins cannot pump enough blood back to the heart. The commonest cause of CVI is superficial venous reflux which is a treatable condition. As functional venous valves are required to provide for efficient blood return from the lower extremities, this condition typically affects the legs. If the impaired vein function causes significant symptoms, such as edema and ulceration, it is referred to as chronic venous disease. It is important to realise that CVI includes varicose veins and superficial venous reflux ("hidden varicose veins") which can now be treated by local anaesthetic endovenous surgery.
English to Portuguese: Solovetsky Islands General field: Marketing Detailed field: Tourism & Travel
Source text - English Solovetsky islands, or Solovki, are an archipelago lying in the White Sea, a hundred miles below the Arctic Circle. They are mostly famous with their Solovetsky monastery, a 15th century UNESCO World Heritage List object, but visitors also can enjoy breathtaking scenery of unspoiled northern nature mixed with religious and archeological objects. Earliest of them are stone labyrinths constructed in 1st-2nd century AD by an unknown ancient culture. Latest ones were built during Stalin’s period, when Solovetsky monastery was expropriated by Bolsheviks and used as a GULAG camp. After the USSR collapse the monastery was returned to Russian Orthodox Church, restoring its role of a key national shrine and becoming a destination for numerous tourists and pilgrims. This combination of spirituality, wilderness and bloody past of Solovki will leave no one indifferent.
Islands are sparsely populated, but their tourist facilities are able to host various visitors, starting from campers up to premium guests. A typical journey lasts 3-4 days and is best performed in summer during the midnight sun season. Cold winds and myriads of mosquitoes are the challenge.
