We can take this same concept and apply it to more traditional electrical circuit by substituting a battery for the energy source, electrical wires for the conductors, a motor for the load, and a switch for the resistor.
Electrical current flows from the negative battery pole, through the conductors to the switch, the fan, and back to the battery on the positive pole.
Alternating Current
Current is found in two forms.
An example of AC power is common household current that powers light bulbs.
Direct Current
Direct current (or DC) flows continuously in the same direction.
An example of DC power is the current obtained from a battery.
Potential Difference
The basic unit of measure of potential difference is the "volt."
The symbol for potential difference is "V" on schematic diagrams and "E" in formulas and equations.
These symbols indicate the force that causes electrons to move in a conductor.
Because the volt unit is used, the potential difference is called "voltage."

In the water wheel picture, the pressure that is built up by the pump represents the voltage needed to push the current (or water) through the conductors (or pipes).
In the electrical circuit, the battery produces the voltage needed to push the current through the wires.
Distribution Systems
Voltage in distribution systems is classified into three groups: high voltage, intermediate voltage, and low voltage.
High voltage is voltage that is above 15,000 volts.
Intermediate voltage is voltage between 15,000 volts and 600 volts.
Low voltage is voltage at 600 volts or less.
Opposition to Current
Resistance is defined as the opposition to current.
Resistance is measured in ohms and is represented by the symbol "R" in equations.
The shorthand notation for ohm is the Greek letter capital omega (Ω).
If voltage is applied to a conductor, current flows.
The amount of current flow depends upon the resistance of the conductor.
The lower the resistance, the higher the current flow for a given amount of voltage.
The higher the resistance, the lower the current flow.
