Source text - English Often the toughest question you will face when you bring out a new technology – especially one as ground-breaking as Link-OS – is when the customer asks, ‘What’s in it for me?’
Well, in this video I want to show you how to answer that question.
In the simplest of terms, the demand we see from our customers is for more devices that are mobile, intelligent and connected to the Cloud.
That is precisely what the Link-OS Environment does.
It’s an open platform that pairs an operating system for smart Zebra printing devices with powerful software apps, making our devices easier to integrate, manage and maintain from any location.
‘Okay’, they might say, ‘that’s all well and good but what does it mean for my company?’
The best way to demonstrate the benefits is to understand the customer needs.
That’s why, as part of our ‘voice of the customer’ discovery process for Link-OS, we identified some of the key challenges that our customers faced and can now respond with very specific ways in which the Link-OS Environment helps to overcome these challenges.
Take, for example, the Retail sector.
Our voice of the customer research showed that the top pain points in this industry are:
Simplifying device deployment and reducing total cost of ownership – or TCO,
Bringing down the cost of IT Support in stores, and… Future-proofing the company to save on capital investments.
When it comes to simplifying device deployment, the Link-OS Profile Manager means you only have to configure one printer and then copy this across your entire printer estate.
Or across a sub-section of printers depending on specific use.
As Profile manager is browser based, it can be accessed from PCs or mobile devices over the cloud.
Which also means that customers can use their existing hardware to access it – so no new hardware outlay.
With access to our Software Development Kit or SDK, retailers can accelerate the development, testing and deployment of merchandising, labelling and point-of-sale applications to improve customer service.
Combined together, all of these new features offer a lower total cost of ownership.
And when it comes to cost of IT support, the Profile Manager app helps reduce downtime in-store by allowing IT to proactively monitor printers that might require maintenance before they ever fail.
As a flexible software platform, Link-OS also reduces a retailer’s need for capital outlay.
Continual updates mean individual devices never become obsolete and with new smart technology – that turns, for example, the camera on an Android device into a barcode scanner.
Printers can become a hub for other activities, thereby reducing the costs of buying expensive additional equipment – such as a single-use barcode scanner.
Let me explain a real use case of Cloud Connect in retail.
Consider a chain of retailers who keep prices on a centrally located database.
When a price reduction is required, a store employee scans the item’s barcode with a Bluetooth scanner, which is connected to the printer.
The printer takes the item information, sends it to the pricing server, which in turn sends the new price information back to the printer.
The end result is a print out of a reduced price tag.
This has saved the need to purchase costly handheld terminals for that store, a cost that could be substantial if there are multiple stores in the chain.
Turning our attention to Transportation and Logistics, TCO and future-proofing were also key concerns.
As was the need for mobile solutions – naturally – as well as Just-In-Time delivery solutions.
Our Print Touch app gives users instant access to customer support and how-to-videos, saving the IT Help Desk time and money.
Print Touch can also launch pre-loaded applications, or direct users to a specified download page.
This also saves time and money and ensures users have the latest, relevant application for their requirement.
The Link-OS environment minimises the need for on-site professional IT support – particularly expensive if you have a network of delivery depots - by enabling remote diagnostics and resolution by centralised IT support.
And when it comes to mobile solutions, Print Touch lets workers on the road link printers, smartphones and tablets by touch via Near Field Communication – eliminating time spent on complex and cumbersome Bluetooth pairing schemes.
It also gives mobile workers greater flexibility as they are not tied to one particular printer.
They can swap printers based on printing requirements, or if a printer has run out of media or is being used elsewhere.
Furthermore, the Cloud Connect app allows the user to collect data such as delivery or collection quantities, submit this information to business applications via the cloud and print a receipt or label based on the result.
This gives real-time costing and proof of delivery or collection to meet the demand for Just-In-Time services.
Link-OS can have a significant impact on the way transport and logistics firms do business.
Consider a company that sells raw materials or receives waste product.
In both cases, different trucks are used, and in each case the tonnage will be different.
Using a weigh scale paired with a connected printer, they can weigh the empty and full vehicles and calculate the weight.
This information could be sent via the printer to a cloud based app that returns an invoice or an acknowledgment to be signed by the driver.
And what about Manufacturing?
Well, as well as the usual TCO concerns, our conversations with manufacturers suggest that they are most interested in reducing downtime on mission-critical processes, shifting from a ‘capacity’ to a ‘need-by’ service model and staying ahead of the competition.
The Link-OS Profile Manager app lets manufacturers manage one printer or a group of printers across large sites or multiple locations from one screen via a PC, smartphone or tablet.
Features such as the Odometer report printer usage and allow the re-allocation or redeployment of other printers should an issue arise.
Preventative maintenance is easier, downtime is reduced and ordering supplies can be managed more effectively.
And when it comes to moving from a ‘capacity’ model to the ‘need-by’ processes of the future, manufacturers explained that they needed broader visibility of orders, stock and parts.
Another growing trend in manufacturing is the rise of “the global plant floor” where multiple locations are managed as a single entity.
Profile Manager can assist with the roll-out of the same printer profiles across multiple plants, consistent firmware updates, as well as detection of issues before they occur.
What is more, with Cloud Connect, Link-OS printers can all be integrated with Cloud applications and can be scaled to meet changing infrastructure requirements.
Link-OS also enables new levels of flexibility.
Our Virtual Device functionality allows emulation of older formats and languages thus allowing companies to install newer more cost effective printers without the need to rewrite existing applications or change their ERP systems.
The Link-OS multi-platform Software Development Kit also gives manufacturers the ability to deploy applications on mobile devices running iOS or Android quickly and cost effectively, allowing them to quickly respond to the changing needs of the business.

This is great news, you know when I was looking at it and I was discussing it with my colleagues, I said:
“hey I should have had it about twenty years ago when I started my career as a sales guy”.
You know every time I was talking to an end user, their first question was ‘what about the connectivity of you printer?’, and that is what Link-OS will address, and far beyond my expectations at the time and now, it’s going to solve a lot of things and more…
it will let us do more with our printers!
So I’m really excited about it, but let me introduce it by talking a bit about market trends before then we will go into the product in more detail.
We looked at the changing expectations and growing demand among our customer base and said
‘You know what? We need to produce an inter-connected software environment for Zebra printers. One that is mobile, intelligent and ready for the Cloud.’
And those trends I mentioned?
Well, industry experts are seeing them you know.
And in fact, in Gartner’s top 10 strategic trends for 2013, if you read that, there is clear evidence that what we have here with Link-OS is just what the market needs.
They tell us that the rapid growth and evolution of mobile devices are setting new user expectations of what is possible.
They tell us that the concept of the Cloud or Internet of Things is no longer a concept but is a reality.
Our own research with Forrester shows that 67 per cent of global respondents plan on implementing an Internet of Things solution by mid-2014.
Gartner’s trends also tell us that integrated ecosystems and enterprise application stores are fast becoming the norm – meaning everything is becoming much easier to use.
And this was our focus in developing Link-OS: how could we make the Zebra user experience easier, more integrated and simpler for our partners to work with?
So how did we get here?
As I mentioned before, it all started with the users.
We work with around 90% of the Fortune 500 but it’s not just big companies that we talked to.
We spent time with customers across a range of vertical markets; with independent software vendors; with our alliance partners; and with our channel partners all around the world.
It took two years and in the process we discovered some really useful insights.
Like, you know, people wanted the ability to manage their Zebra printers from multiple locations – to make them even more user-friendly.
They wanted to be able to change legacy printers without changing host systems – to keep the costs down.
They wanted to write code once and then re-use it – saving time and effort on customisations.
We saw that many of these challenges were the same regardless of the vertical market or type of customer.
Perhaps most importantly, through these conversations we discovered that we needed to build a smart, completely integrated, totally connected global business solution.
Hey, you remember when I was talking about connectivity before – that’s it!
One that could meet the ever-changing demands of enterprises in the world, offer people the flexibility to make their own changes and help them gain a competitive advantage.

The full suite of applications has been developed with our partners in mind – offering access to new software and service revenue by creating out-of-the-box applications for a wider range of customers.
With Link-OS, Zebra is redefining the sector by building a complete printing environment that benefits everyone.

utilizza una nuova tecnologia, specialmente se innovativa come Link-OS, è: “Quali sono i vantaggi per il cliente?”
Nel presente video viene mostrata una possibile risposta a questa domanda.
In termini semplici, i clienti richiedono più dispositivi mobili, intelligenti e connessi al cloud.
È proprio ciò di cui dispone l’ambiente Link-OS.
Si tratta di una piattaforma aperta che collega un sistema operativo per dispositivi di stampa intelligenti del marchio Zebra con potenti applicazioni software, rendendo i nostri dispositivi più facili da integrare, gestire e riparare in qualsiasi posizione.
Ci si potrebbe però chiedere: “Sono tutti dispositivi ottimi, ma qual è la loro utilità all’interno dell’azienda?”
Il miglior modo per dimostrare i vantaggi è capire le richieste del cliente.
Ecco perché, come parte del nostro processo di ricerca per Link-OS chiamato ‘la voce dei consumatori’, abbiamo identificato alcune delle principali sfide che i nostri clienti hanno dovuto affrontare e che ora possono vincere grazie a Link-OS.
Per esempio, il settore del commercio al dettaglio.
Secondo la nostra ricerca sui consumatori, i punti più critici legati all’azienda risultano:
La semplificazione nella distribuzione dei dispositivi e la riduzione del costo totale di proprietà, o TCO;
La diminuzione del costo del supporto IT nei punti vendita e le capacità future dell’azienda nell’investimento di capitali.
Uno dei vantaggi è la semplificazione nella distribuzione dei dispositivi: il Profile Manager di Link-OS permette di configurare un’unica stampante e copiare attraverso l’intero parco stampanti.
Oppure attraverso un sottogruppo di stampanti dipendente da un uso specifico.
In quanto il Profile Manager si basa sul browser, è possibile accedervi da pc o da dispositivi mobili attraverso il cloud.
In questo modo i clienti potranno utilizzare il loro hardware attuale per effettuare l’accesso. Di conseguenza non sarà necessario acquistarne uno nuovo.
Con il Software Development Kit o SDK, i rivenditori possono accelerare lo sviluppo, la prova e la configurazione di attività promozionali, etichettatura e applicazioni per punti vendita per migliorare il servizio clienti.
Tutte queste nuove caratteristiche offrono un costo totale di proprietà minore.
Per quanto riguarda i costi del supporto IT, l’applicazione Profile Manager contribuisce a ridurre i tempi di inattività nel punto vendita permettendo al sistema IT di monitorare in modo attivo le stampanti che potrebbero richiedere una manutenzione anticipata.
Link-OS, una piattaforma software flessibile, riduce inoltre le richieste dei rivenditori per quanto riguarda la spesa capitale.
Gli aggiornamenti costanti fanno sì che i dispositivi non risultino mai obsoleti e offrono una nuova tecnologia intelligente che trasforma, per esempio, la fotocamera di un dispositivo Android in uno scanner a codici a barre.

Verrà illustrato un esempio reale di utilizzo di Cloud Connect per la vendita.
Si consideri una catena di rivenditori che registrano i prezzi all’interno di un database localizzato centralmente.
Quando viene richiesta una riduzione dei prezzi, un impiegato del punto vendita rileva il codice a barre del prodotto grazie a uno scanner bluetooth connesso alla stampante.
La stampante memorizza l’informazione relativa al prodotto, la invia al server prezzi che a sua volta invia l’informazione di nuovo alla stampante.
Il risultato finale è la stampa di un’etichetta con il prezzo ridotto.
Questo sistema ha evitato l’acquisto di costosi terminali portatili e una successiva spesa notevole per un’intera catena di negozi.
Per quanto riguarda trasporto e logistica, il costo totale di possesso e la compatibilità con standard futuri rappresentavano problemi importanti.
Oltre alla necessità di soluzioni mobili, venivano richieste anche soluzioni di consegna Just-In-Time.
La nostra applicazione Print Touch dà agli utenti la possibilità di un accesso istantaneo al supporto e all’how-to-videos, risparmiando tempo e denaro del IT Help Desk.
Inoltre, Print Touch è in grado di avviare applicazioni precaricate o permettere agli utenti di accedere a specifiche pagine di download.
Questo sistema permette di risparmiare tempo e denaro e assicura agli utenti un’applicazione nuova e pertinente per le loro necessità.
L’ambiente Link-OS minimizza la necessità di supporto IT professionale in loco, particolarmente costoso se si possiede una rete di depositi, rendendo possibile una diagnostica remota e una risoluzione da parte del supporto IT centralizzato.
E quando si tratta di soluzioni mobili, il Print Touch permette ai lavoratori mobili di collegare stampanti, smartphone e tablet con un clic grazie alla Near Field Communication, eliminando il tempo speso per i complessi e scomodi collegamenti bluetooth.
Fornisce inoltre una maggiore flessibilità non essendo collegato a nessuna stampante in particolare.
È possibile sostituire stampanti basate su requisiti di stampa, oppure in caso di esaurimento del supporto o di utilizzo altrove.
Inoltre, l’applicazione Cloud Connect permette all’utente di raccogliere i dati relativi per esempio a quantità di consegna o raccolta, inviare informazioni alle applicazioni aziendali attraverso il cloud e stampare una ricevuta o un’etichetta del risultato.
Questo sistema fornisce una stima dei costi in tempo reale e una prova della consegna o della raccolta per soddisfare la richiesta di servizi Just-In-Time.
Link-OS influenza in modo significativo le modalità di trasporto e logistica delle aziende.
Si consideri un’azienda che vende materie prime o raccoglie rifiuti.
In entrambi i casi vengono utilizzati mezzi di trasporto diversi e in ogni caso la stazza sarà diversa.
Collegando una bilancia a una stampante, è possibile misurare veicoli vuoti e carichi e calcolarne il peso.
Tale informazione può essere inviata tramite stampante a un’applicazione basata sul cloud che restituisce una fattura o un’accettazione firmata dall’autista.
Per quanto riguarda la produzione?
Allo stesso modo, per quanto riguarda i dubbi relativi al TCO (costo totale di proprietà), i produttori sono interessati a ridurre i tempi di inattività all’interno dei processi mission-critical, spostandosi da un modello di servizio a ‘capacità’ a un modello di ‘necessità’, mantenendo il primato.
L’applicazione Profile Manager di Link-OS permette ai produttori di gestire una sola o più stampanti in aree estese e sedi diverse da un unico schermo via pc, smartphone o tablet.
Alcune peculiarità, come il contatore, stilano un resoconto dell’utilizzo della stampante e permettono una nuova collocazione o l’installazione di altre stampanti in caso di necessità.
Una manutenzione preventiva risulta più semplice, i tempi di inattività sono ridotti e l’ordine per le attrezzature necessarie può essere gestito in modo più efficace.
E quando si passa da un modello ‘capacità’ a processi futuri di ‘necessità’, i produttori richiedono una più ampia visibilità degli ordini, dell’inventario e delle parti.
Un’altra tendenza in crescita nella produzione è la nascita de “l’impianto di produzione globale” dove numerose sedi vengono gestite da enti singoli.
Il Profile Manager può prestare assistenza con l’avvio degli stessi profili per la stampa attraverso numerosi impianti, aggiornamenti firmware costanti e il rilevamento di problemi prima che si verifichino.
Con Cloud Connect le stampanti Link-OS possono essere integrate alle applicazioni cloud e adattate per soddisfare i requisiti di cambiamento dell’infrastruttura.
Link-OS consente inoltre nuovi livelli di flessibilità.
La funzionalità del nostro dispositivo virtuale permette la copia di vecchi formati e lingue così da consentire alle aziende di installare nuove stampanti efficaci più costose senza la necessità di riprogrammare applicazioni esistenti o modificare i loro sistemi ERP (Pianificazione delle risorse d’impresa).
Il Software Development Kit multi-piattaforma di Link-OS mette a disposizione dei produttori la capacità di distribuire le applicazioni sui dispositivi mobili con iOS o Android in modo più veloce e meno costoso, permettendo di rispondere rapidamente alle necessità mutevoli di mercato.

Sono molto emozionato a riguardo, ma voglio iniziare parlando delle tendenze di mercato, prima di presentare nel dettaglio il prodotto.
Abbiamo esaminato le aspettative mutevoli e la richiesta crescente tra i consumatori e abbiamo affermato:
“Sapete una cosa? Dobbiamo creare un ambiente software interconnesso per stampanti Zebra. Un software che sia mobile, intelligente e pronto per il cloud”.
E quali sono le tendenze di mercato?
Gli esperti aziendali sono informati.
In effetti, nelle 10 tendenze strategiche proposte da Gartner per il 2013, se l’avete letto, è evidente che Link-OS sia ciò di cui necessita il mercato.
La rapida crescita e l’evoluzione dei dispositivi mobili stabiliscono nuove aspettative da parte degli utenti.
Il concetto di cloud o di Internet of Things non è più solo un’idea astratta, ma rappresenta la realtà.
La nostra ricerca con Forrester mostra che il 67 per cento degli utenti a livello globale ha in progetto di implementare una soluzione Internet of Things entro la metà del 2014.
Le tendenze Gartner affermano che gli ecosistemi integrati e gli application store delle aziende stanno diventando la norma, vale a dire che tutto sta diventando più semplice da utilizzare.

In che modo è stato possibile?
Come già menzionato in precedenza, è iniziato tutto dagli utenti.
Lavoriamo con circa il 90% delle 500 migliori aziende presentate dalla rivista Fortune, ma non parliamo solo di grandi imprese.
Abbiamo trascorso del tempo con i clienti all’interno di una gamma di mercati verticali, con venditori di software indipendenti, con i nostri partner e con partner di canale in tutto il mondo.
Abbiamo impiegato due anni e durante il processo abbiamo prodotto idee davvero utili.
Come per esempio, l’abilità richiesta dagli utenti di gestire le proprie stampanti Zebra da numerose sedi per diventare più user-friendly.
Richiedevano maggiore abilità nel sostituire le vecchie stampanti senza modificare i sistemi host, per mantenere bassi i prezzi.
Richiedevano un unico codice da poter riutilizzare risparmiando tempo e sforzi per la personalizzazione.
Si è notato che queste sfide erano le stesse indipendentemente dal mercato verticale e dal tipo di consumatore.
Inoltre, grazie al confronto con gli utenti, si è scoperto che è necessario creare una soluzione aziendale globale, intelligente, completamente integrata e totalmente connessa.
Vi ricordate quando si è parlato di connettività? È proprio questa l’idea.
Una soluzione che possa soddisfare le richieste in continuo mutamento delle aziende di tutto il mondo, offrire ai clienti la flessibilità di poter organizzare le proprie modifiche e aiutarli ad acquisire un vantaggio competitivo.
Link-OS è la giusta soluzione aziendale.
È in grado, come mai prima, di rendere più semplice l’integrazione, l’organizzazione e il mantenimento di dispositivi di stampa.
