Russian to English: Bazhenov's Model of the Grand Kremlin Palace General field: Art/Literary | |
| Translation - English Parts of the legendary 18th century model from the permanent collection of the Shchusev State Museum of Architecture are on display for the first time in twenty years. The realization of the project by the Russian architect Vasily Bazhenov by order of Empress Catherine the Great at the location of the demolished Kremlin would not have only radically changed the urban landscape of Moscow, but also placed Russia at the forefront of the Age of Enlightenment. The gigantic model, christened the “eighth wonder of the world” during Bazhenov’s lifetime, has been in the process of scientific restoration for many years. The exhibition of its best preserved parts is the first step towards the reinstallation of the permanent collection of the Museum, which was removed from display in the last decade of the 20th century. |

Source text - English The person who desires to turn a literary masterpiece into another language, has only one duty to perform, and this is to reproduce with absolute exactitude the whole text, and nothing but the text. The term “literal translation” is tautological since anything but that is not truly a translation but an imitation, an adaption or a parody. |
