English to Turkish: Excerpt (the Dwarves' Song) from The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, Turkish translation published by Ithaki yayınları, 2007, Istanbul General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away ere break of day
To seek the pale enchanted gold.
The dwarves of yore made mighty spells,
While hammers fell like ringing bells
In places deep, where dark things sleep,
In hollow halls beneath the fells.
For ancient king and elvish lord
There many a gleaming golden hoard
They shaped and wrought, and light they caught
To hide in gems on hilt of sword.
On silver necklaces they strung
The flowering stars, on crowns they hung
The dragon-fire, in twisted wire
They meshed the light of moon and sun.
Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day,
To claim our long-forgotten gold.
Goblets they carved there for themselves
And harps of gold; where no man dwelves
There lay they long, and many a song
Was sung unheard by men or elves.
The pines were roaring on the height,
The winds were moaning in the night.
The fire was red, its flaming spread;
The trees like torches blazed with light.
The bells were ringing in the dale
And men looked up with faces pale;
Then dragon's ire more fierce than fire
Laid low their towers and houses frail.
The mountain smoked beneath the moon;
The dwarves, they heard the tramp of doom.
They fled their hall to dying fall.
Beneath his feet, beneath the moon.
Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day,
To win our harps and gold from him."
Translation - Turkish Soğuk, dumanlı dağların ardındaki ıraklara
Derin zindanlarla eski mağaralara
Düşmeli yolumuz gün doğmadan oralara
Efsunlu, soluk altını aramaya
Eskinin cüceleri kudretli büyüler yaptı
Çekiçler inerken çınlayan çanlar örneği
Karanlık şeylerin uyuduğu, derin mekanlarda
Otlakların aşağısındaki boş salonlarda
Kadim kral için, bir de lordu elflerin
Dövüp işlediler nice menevişli altın yığınını
Ve yakalayıp ışığı sakladılar
Kılıcın kabzasındaki değerli taşlarda
Geçirdiler çiçeklenen yıldızları
Gümüş kolyelere, astılar ejderin harını taçlara
Ördüler telkâriye şavkını
Ayın ve güneşin.
Soğuk, sisli dağların ardındaki ıraklara
Derin zindanlarla eski mağaralara
Düşmeli yolumuz gün doğmadan oralara
Efsunlu, soluk altını aramaya
Orada oydular kadehler kendilerine
Ve altından harplar; hiçbir insanın varmadığı o yerde
Yattılar nice zaman ve söylendi nice şarkı
Ulaşmadan ne insanlar, ne elflerin kulağına.
Çanlar çalıyordu vadide
İnsanlar başlarını göğe kaldırdı soluk yüzlerle;
Ejderhanın gazabı yangından da yaman
Yerle bir etti kuleleriyle narin evlerini.
Ayın altında dumanlar tütüyordu dağdan;
Cüceler işitti ayak seslerini kıyametin.
Kaçtılar salonlarından ölümlerine
Ayın altında, onun ayaklarının dibine düşmeye.
Soğuk, sisli dağların ardındaki ıraklara
Derin zindanlarla eski mağaralara
Düşmeli yolumuz gün doğmadan oralara
Harplarımızla altınımızı ondan geri almaya!

Years of experience: 26. Registered at ProZ.com: Oct 2011.
I have been a freelance (and sometime in-house) translator since 1998. After graduating from Üsküdar American Academy in Istanbul, I proceeded to earn my Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from Boğaziçi University. After working for 1.5 years in quality control in a pharmaceutical plant (Fako İlaçları A.Ş. Hammadde Fabrikası - Later acquired by Actavis), I became a full-time translator, translating 14 fiction and non-fiction titles (most recently, "En Hızlı Milyar: Afrika'nın Ekonomik Devriminin Ardındaki Hikaye" [The Fastest Billion: The Story Behind Africa’s Economic Revolution] by Charles Robertson, published by the Ankara Chamber of Industry in 2013). In the meantime, I have worked on a large number of translation and localization projects, directly or on behalf of translation companies. Among the parties with whom I have direct contact are various Non Governmental Organizations including the Chamber of Mechanical Engineers, the Mechanical Contractors' Association, the Foundation for Heating, Cooling, and Air Conditioning Research and Education and sundry private sector companies, which references will be offered on request. I am a solution partner for several leading translation agencies in Turkey, catering to the translation and localization needs of many multinational and international companies, on a regular basis.
I am a sworn translator of the 23rd Notary Public of Beşiktaş, and of the 10th Notary Public of Üsküdar.
I have been working with Trados since 1999, of which I am a proficient user.
