Source text - German Das systematische Überwachen von Verbreitung und Vorkommen der Wildkatze war bis vor wenigen Jahren nicht möglich, denn die Art lebt erstens sehr heimlich und konnte zweitens am lebenden Tier nicht sicher bestimmt von wildfarbenen Hauskatzen unterschieden werden. Eine kürzlich für das BAFU erstellte Studie über ein landesweites Monitoringprogramm für die kleineren Raubtiere hält die Wildkatze denn auch für nicht systematisch überwachbar.
Nachdem es möglich geworden war, eine sichere Diagnose für die Wildkatze anhand eines einzigen Haares zu bekommen, erschien das Unmögliche plötzlich machbar, zumal in Deutschland eine elegante Lockstockmethode zum Sammeln von Wildkatzenhaaren erdacht worden war und neue Entwicklungen von Fang-Wiederfangmodellen den Umgang mit Präsenz-/Absenzdaten schwer nachweisbarer Tierarten sehr erleichtern .
[...]Es ist grundsätzlich nicht einfach, Bestände und Verbreitung mittelgrosser Raubtiere in grossräumig zu überwachen. Die Tiere sind natürlicherweise seltener als andere Säugetiere wie z.B. Huftiere oder Nager. Ausserdem sind sie mehrheitlich nachts und häufig innerhalb von deckungsreicher Vegetation aktiv. Fallenfänge fallen ausser Betracht, weil die meisten Arten schwierig zu fangen sind und der Aufwand auch sonst immens wäre. Daher bedient man sich in der Regel indirekter Nachweismethoden. Anders als andere mittelgrosse Carnivoren bietet die Wildkatze leider weder leicht kartierbare Baue (Dachs, Fuchs), noch ein für Menschen einfach erfassbares Markierverhalten (Fischotter, Steinmarder) als Basis für eine Erfassung. Bei der Wildkatze kommt erschwerend hinzu, dass die Art weder anhand von Feldzeichen (z.B. Trittsiegel, Fährte, Losung), noch durch Sichtbeobachtung oder Fotobeleg sicher identifiziert werden kann. Obwohl sich die Linie der Europäischen Wildkatze (Felis silvestris silvestris) wohl vor über 200'000 Jahren von der Stammform der Hauskatze (Felis silvestris lybica oder Felis silvestris ornata) getrennt hat, gibt es immer wieder Hauskatzen, die rein äusserlich auch für Experten nicht von Wildkatzen unterscheidbar sind. Fotofallen, die klassische Überwachungsmethode für Feliden, scheiden daher bei der Wildkatze aus. Bislang musste man sich entweder mit unsicheren Hinweisen oder mit einer äusserst geringen Menge an sicheren Nachweisen durch Totfunde1 zufrieden geben. So gibt es in der Schweiz gesamthaft nur etwa 40 sicher belegte und bestimmte Wildkatzennachweise.
Translation - Italian Il controllo sistematico della diffusione e della presenza del gatto selvatico non era possibile fino a pochi anni fa poiché, in primo luogo, la specie vive molto al nascosto e, in secondo luogo, quando è ancora in vita, non può essere distinta con sicurezza dal gatto domestico con il pelo dal colore selvatico. Uno studio da poco condotto per il BAFU in tutto il paese riguardo al programma di monitoraggio degli animali selvatici più piccoli, tiene in considerazione anche il gatto selvatico in vita.
Dopo che fu reso possibile avere una diagnosi sicura della presenza del gatto selvatico, grazie ad un singolo pelo, l’impossibile sembrò realizzabile, soprattutto quando in Germania fu ideato un elegante metodo con pali per la raccolta dei peli del gatto selvatico e dopo che nuovi sviluppi di modelli di cattura hanno molto semplificato i rapporti con i dati riguardo alla presenza/assenza di determinate specie difficilmente dimostrabili.
[...] In linea di massima non è facile controllare la presenza e la diffusione di animali selvatici di media grandezza in ampi territori. Questi animali sono infatti naturalmente più rari di altri mammiferi come, per esempio, ungulati e roditori. Inoltre, essi sono per la maggior parte attivi di notte e all’interno di una vegetazione piena di nascondigli.
Le catture casuali non vengono prese in considerazione, in quanto molte specie sono difficili da catturare e anche perché le spese sarebbero enormi. Perciò ci si avvale solitamente di indiretti metodi di prova.
Diversamente da altri carnivori di grandezza media, il gatto selvatico purtroppo non offre né tane schedabili (come i tassi e le volpi), né un comportamento facilmente comprensibile per gli uomini come base per la registrazione (come le lontre e le faine).
Per il gatto selvatico si aggiunge il problema che la specie non può essere segnalata con sicurezza né in base a insegne (segnali delle tracce, tragitti), né con l’aiuto dell’osservazione sul campo o di prove fotografiche. Sebbene la linea di discendenza del gatto selvatico europeo (Felis silvestris silvestris) si sia separata da quella del progenitore gatto domestico (Felis silvestris lybica o Felis silvestris ornata) all’incirca ben 200 000 anni fa, ci sono sempre più gatti domestici che esteriormente non sono distinguibili dal gatto selvatico, neanche dagli esperti. Le fotografie, classici metodi di sorveglianza dei felini, vengono quindi scartate per il gatto selvatico.
Finora ci si è dovuti accontentare o di segnalazioni incerte o di prove estremamente scarse ottenute con il ritrovamento delle carcasse. Così in Svizzera ci sono solo all’incirca 40 prove sicure e documentate della presenza del gatto selvatico.
