Brijmohan managed to lay his hands on Naseem Jaan's dressing table. It had a life-size mirror encased in an ivory frame and Brijmohan’s daughters took their turns on the mirror to look themselves from different angles. The mirror was cloudy and the hair oil, nail polish and lipstick stains on the frame gave it a rundown look. Brijmohan was uneasy a little as he noticed a change in his daughters. They had stood in the balcony in the past too, but not quite the same way. Now, even Chhoti, the youngest one, plastered her face with talcum powder and lipstick, and giggled and laughed as she stood in the balcony.
That day too, the three of them were out on the balcony amusing themselves. Standing quietly on the road Brijmohan was watching their antics.

दंगे में रंडियां भी लूटी गईं थीं
बृजमोहन को नसीम जान का सिंगारदान हाथ लगा था। सिंगारदान का फ्रेम हाथीदांत का था जिसमें आदमकद आईना जडा हुआ था और ब्रजमोहन की लडक़ियां बारी – बारी से शीशे में अपना अक्स देखा करती थीं। फ्रेम में जगह जगह तेल, नाखून पॉलिश और लिपस्टिक के धब्बे थे जिससे उसका रंग मटमैला हो गया था और ब्रजमोहन हैरान था कि इन दिनों उसकी बेटियों के लच्छन
ये लच्छन पहले नहीं थे। पहले भी वे बालकनी में खडी रहती थीं लेकिन अन्दाज यह नहीं होता था अब तो छोटी भी उसी तरह पाउडर थोपती थी और होंठों पर गाढी लिपस्टिक जमा कर बालकनी में ठठा करती थी।
आज भी तीनों की तीनों बालकनी में खडी आपस में उसी तरह चुहलें कर रही थीं और बृजमोहन चुपचाप सडक़ पर खडा उनके हाव भाव देख रहा था।
