Biography: Joênia Batista de Carvalho

I was discriminated against for three things. I was poor, I was indigenous, and I was a woman”.

Joênia Batista de Carvalho (age 30), a Wapixana woman from Brazil, works on the frontlines in the struggle for indigenous peoples’ rights. But before she got there, she had to overcome great obstacles. In a region in which indigenous people are often denied a basic education – and face discrimination if they do pursue one – she became not only Brazil’s first female indigenous lawyer, but also a leader in the battle for her people’s rights.

Over half of Brazil’s indigenous population lives in poverty, and most still depend on the land for their subsistence. But outside farming, logging, and mining interests continue to encroach upon them. The largest indigenous reserve is the Raposa Serra do Sol in the Roraima region. The people have mobilized to protect their land by getting it demarcated, but the government has yet to ratify the protection – leaving the region vulnerable to invasion by farmers and commercial interests. As the only lawyer at the Indigenous counsel of Roraima (CIR), Joênia has been a leader in the demarcation movement, fighting this battle on a variety of fronts. But still the battle has not been won. And the tense political climate in the region has resulted in a number of human rights violations against indigenous people, including murder, threats, persecution, and torture by the police.

In addition to fighting for land rights, Joênia defends the victims of human rights violations and has become a leading advocate and educator for her people. She represents their interests to the press, organizes campaigns, and attempts to bridge the gap between indigenous communities and governmental authorities.
